You can find information on DID (dissociative identity disorder)by reading this article.
If you have any of the symptoms described below, check with your doctor. You have dissociative identity disorder, the psychiatrist told me. My mouth hung open in disbelief. This was the third psychiatrist I had seen in six months for evaluation, and this one was on the roster of official court ordered psychiatrists for the county. I had gone to him on my own hoping for a different diagnosis, and was sorely disappointed. Images of Sybil, or an out of control alter frothing at the mouth, flashed into my mind. I worried that I would be seen by others in this light. I knew very little about DID at that time, and had no idea how wrong my misconceptions of it were. bodyOffer(29071) Dissociative identity disorder (DID, formerly called MPD, or multiple personality disorder) is a psychological response to trauma that is usually severe and occurs early in childhood. For the person with DID, the challenge is learning to cope with daily life, while healing from the traumatic events of childhood. In this article, I will be sharing from my perspective both as a health professional, and a survivor, on how to cope with DID. This is NOT meant to replace therapy with a qualified therapist or psychiatrist, but only meant to be informational based on one persons experiences with DID. DID has been called a chronic form of post-traumatic disorder. Certainly the symptoms of PTSD are encapsulated in the personality states of the person with DID. Learning what symptoms may occur, and how to deal with them, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle, is the challenge for the person in recovery.

Dissociative Identity Disorder aka Multiple Personality Disorder
The presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states (each with its own relatively enduring pattern of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and self). At least two of these identities or personality states recurrently take control of the person's behavior. Inability to recall important personal information that is too extensive to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness. The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., blackouts or chaotic behavior during Alcohol Intoxication) or a general medical condition (e.g., complex partial seizures). Note: In children, the symptoms are not attributable to imaginary playmates or other fantasy play. Dissociative Identity Disorder is also referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder.

TREATMENT
Table of Contents
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is the treatment of choice for individuals suffering from any type of dissociative disorder. Approaches vary widely, but generally take an individual modality (as opposed to family, group or couples therapy) and emphasize the integration of the various personality states into one, cohesive whole personality. It should be noted that while it's convenient to talk of people who suffer from this disorder as having "multiple personalities," this is just a theoretical construct. People who suffer from this disorder believe they have multiple personalities which then take on a life of their own within the individual (perhaps reinforced by the belief). The new term for this disorder in the DSM-IV more accurately reflects the problem the individual suffers from dissociative identities. Their personality is the sum of these identities, which have been split off at some point in the past. The split is usually due to some individual or multiple traumatic events.
Medications
The use of medication, except for the treatment of acute, specific concurrent Axis I disorders, is not recommended. Maintenance and effective use of prescriptions given the multiple personality states is difficult to attain. If medication is prescribed, it should be carefully monitored.

By Bonnie R. Saks Citation: Saks Bonnie M. Transgenderism and Dissociative Identity Disorder - A Case Study . IJT 2,2, http://www.symposion.com/ijt/ijtc0404.htm Abstract This paper focuses on the process of assessing gender issues. Dissociation and Dissociative Identity Disorder are discussed. A case of dissociative identity disorder presenting as gender dysphoria is presented. This individual, who was sexually traumatized as a little girl, had seven surgeries to complete gender reassignment before treating clinicians recognized that there were multiple male and female ego states. Psychological testing and treatment recommendations are suggested so that integration can be achieved or at least consensus of ego states can be reached before GRS surgery is done.

These procedures employed a modification of the alpha/theta neurofeedback procedures previously described by Peniston and Kulkosky (1991). Eleven female subjects meeting DSM-III-R (1987) criteria for DID were provided with 30 sessions of Neurofeedback and 10 group sessions as treatment. Subjects were administered the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (Millon, 1987) and the Global Assessment of Functioning scale (DSM-III-R, 1987) before and after 30 neurofeedback sessions. One to three years post treatment, subjects completed a Dissociative Experience Scale questionnaire (Bernstein and Putnam 1986) to assess the long term efficacy of treatment.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) seems to effect many people. It has been suggested that it is a coping disorder that helps people deal with intensive abuse in thier lives in a manner that allows that person to cope effectively.
"My husband is afraid for people to know he

There are many sites on the web. These are only a few. I offer them to help educate others and to support the creators of these pages. Some of the pages are intense. Some are triggering. Most of these pages do offer a guide as you go through them as to what material may be most suitable given the emotional space that you are in. Always, when dealing with potentially triggering materials remember that you may come back at any time. Take the pages at your own pace. They do for the most part offer a wonderful testimony to the ability people have to survive in even the worst of circumstances.

57. DID Facts
Dr. Cameron West recounts the dramatic true story of his struggle with multiple personalities, the condition now known as dissociative identity disorder.
http://cameronwest.com/did1.html
  • Formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder
  • Given a diagnostic category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 1980.
  • Characterized by the existence of two or more distinct personality states that have the capacity to take control of the body and the inability to recall personal information too great to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness. The condition cannot be due to the effect of substances or a medical condition.
  • There may be accompanying symptoms such as depression, anxiety, obsessive/compulsive behavior, eating disorders, substance abuse, etc.
  • Arises from continued and repeated sexual and/or physical abuse beginning in early childhood.
  • DID is a defensive mechanism that protects the child from the physical and emotional pain associated with abuse by separating a part of the child’s mind or consciousness to deal with the trauma of the abuse. Over time and repeated abuse, these separate parts establish identities of their own.
  • People with DID have been shown to be highly susceptible to dissociation (an alteration in consciousness wherein the individual and some aspect of his or her self or environment become disconnected or disengaged from one another), of above average intelligence, and highly creative. DID is generally diagnosed in adulthood, triggered by some factor that compels or allows the alters to emerge.
  • Systems of alter personalities differ from individual to individual, but there are generally host personalities who appear most often, opposite gender personalities, self-helper personalities, persecutory personalities who may harm themselves or others, and child personalities.

Over the course of treatment, Julie eventually identified 13 different alter personalities. Julie's experience is not uncommon for individuals with DID. Most people with DID have more than one alter, and some have reported up to 200 alter personalities! Usually, some of the alter personalities know about other alters, but only one alter (known in the psychology literature as the Internal Self Helper) knows about all the other alter personalities. This was true for Julie. She had some alters that knew about others, but only one knew about all the other alter personalities. Though effective at protecting the child in the immediacy of a traumatic and emotionally horrible situation, dissociation obviously creates a false understanding of the world that generally crumbles years later as the brokenness and stresses of life continue into adulthood. Even after the abuse is over and the child is separated from the threatening situation, the dissociation and lack of communication between the personality states continues. Ultimately, individuals with DID often seek counseling, not for the DID itself but because of depression, memory loss, confusion, or distress over forgetting particular interactions with people. For Julie, it was feelings of sadness and abandonment after the loss of a meaningful adult relationship that initially brought her into counseling.

Dissociative Identity Disorder: An Analytical Overview Jacqueline Costello York College of Pennsylvania
Abstract Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is not a new phenomena, yet it has remained controversial for years. Formerly multiple personality disorder, DID has many in the field of psychology undecided if it should even be included in the DSM-IV without reservation. This paper will discuss the opinions of board certified American psychiatrists concerning DID and the various reasons why many remain skeptical about this disorder. The DSM-IV criteria, alleged claims of abuse, cultural specificity, and the clinical defining features of dissociative identity disorder will be discussed. The treatment of traumatic memories and the effectiveness of this treatment will also be discussed in this paper. Dissociative Identity Disorder: Controversies and Treatments Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly Multiple Personality Disorder remains a highly controversial disorder. The diagnostic criteria for this disorder as cited in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 1994 , states that an individual displaying at least two personality states in which these personality states take control of the persons behavior can be diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder (DID).
