22. Dissociative Identity Disorder
The existence of dissociative identity disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), is still a symptom of another disorder and not a disorder unto itself
http://www.geocities.com/mycauses/did.html
The existence of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), is still debated in the medical field. There are some professionals who do not believe it exists, despite its classification in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in 1980. They consider it a symptom of another disorder and not a disorder unto itself. These are the people who think the disorder can be “cured” with the use of drugs. It is considered acceptable to give clients anti-psychotic medications in order to suppress the so-called voices that DID clients exist with. DID is a disturbance of identity in which two or more separate and distinct personality states, or identities if you will, control the individual's behavior at different times. These other identities are referred to as "alters". It is not unusual for one identity to be unable to remember events that happened when an alter is in control. The different identities may exhibit differences in speech, mannerisms, attitudes, thoughts, and gender and sexual orientation. In some cases, the alters may even differ in physical properties such as allergies, hand dominance, or the need for eyeglass prescriptions. The differences between alters are often quite striking. A person with DID may have as few as two alters, or as many as 100. The average number is about 10. Research has shown that the average age for the initial development of alters in children is 5.9 years. DID develops in early childhood when a child is forced to endure repeated sexual and/or physical abuse. Dissociation is a defensive mechanism. It protects the child by separating a part of his/her mind, or consciousness, to deal with the trauma of the abuse. With time and repeated abuse, these separate parts establish identities of their own and become the alters. In general, there is a host identity, who will appear most often, and there are opposite gender personalities, self-helper personalities, child personalities and persecutory personalities. The process of shifting from one of these alters to another is known as "switching".

Guidelines for Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder
(Multiple Personality Disorder) in Adults (1997) Members of the 1996 Executive Council were Elizabeth Bowman, MD, James Chu, MD, Colin Ross, MD, Nancy Perry, PhD, Jean Goodwin, MD, Marlene Steinberg, MD, John Curtis, MD, Peter Barach, PhD, Susan Oke, Bsc OT (C), and Esther Giller, MA.
Introduction
By Peter M. Barach, Ph.D.
Former Chair, Standards of Practice Committee
At its meeting in Vancouver, BC, Canada, in May 1994, the Executive Council of ISSD adopted "Guidelines for Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder) in Adults (1994)." The guidelines present a broad outline of what has thus far seemed to be effective treatment for DID. The guidelines are not intended to replace the therapist’s clinical judgment, but they do aim to summarize what most commonly has been found to benefit DID patients. Where a clear divergence of opinion exists in the field, the guidelines attempt to present both sides of the issue. Guidelines like these are never finished. This revision is the first since the adoption of the guidelines in 1994. The Executive Council is aware of several areas that the present guidelines overlook, such as partial hospitalization/day treatment programs and the treatment of children with DID. In addition to adding new domains, future revisions of the guidelines will take account of new knowledge arising in the dissociative disorders field.

" Down with skepticism, up with awareness. " Label on a button at a MPD conference. " Every MPD patient in the country owes a personal debt of gratitude to Buddy [Braun]. He's the first ever to get a unit set up for these people, and all the other units around the country follow the trail he has blazed. " M. Keenan, New City article, 1995-JUN-22: " The Devil and Dr. Braun ." "...students often ask me whether multiple personality disorder (MPD) really exists. I usually reply that the symptoms attributed to it are as genuine as hysterical paralysis and seizures." Dr. Paul McHugh " I have this head shrinker and he says...[MPD is]...deliberately induced because the CIA is where they started inducing it when after they brought all the Nazis over from Germany to run American Psychiatric Association....It is all mind control and all kinds of things to invent people with multiple personalities.... I believe the government has implanted some kind of a chip into my head where... [my thoughts are] monitored by Barbara Walters and these other women. And they take all my ideas...I think [Oprah] sits with her finger on the switch to the chip....several times I wondered if I had multiple personality disorder. In fact, or if I was just from another planet."

This web site is dedicated to those who have suffered from child abuse and/or some form of dissociative disorder.. If you have suffered from child abuse, then you have probably experienced depression, anxiety, dissociating, insomnia, to much sleep, flashbacks, hopelessness, terrifying nightmares intimacy issues, fear of commitment or unable to hold a job. You may also be angry with God because you feel as if He has let you down, by not protecting you or not answering your many pleas for intervention of what was happening to you. Maybe you have been diagnosed with, "Borderline Personality Disorder" or some other type of personality/dissociative disorder, as well as "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder". If so, your at the right place! Most all child abuse survivor's have dealt with dissociation, because the abuse was just to hard for us to with stand as a child or even a teenager. It was the only way to cope at the time, now that we are older and stronger, our bodies and minds are better equipped to handle what happened to us. This doesn't mean it's an easy task, but it is our way of healing. This is the main reason I have put this group together! I do realize that each of us are a differeant levels of healing and because this is so, we will be able to understand and be supportive of one another. I am no better than any of you. I am sure I will learn alot from each of one you.

We are survivors of childhood abuse. We are one body with many people inside. We had to create other people in order to live through our "childhood." Clinically it's referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder, recently re-named Dissociative Identity Disorder (since the psychology field argues over the issue of alters versus people. Dissociative Identity Disorder
Rachel Kaplan
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) is considered by the American Psychiatric Association to be one of 4 main kinds of dissociative disorders (DSM-IV): "The essential feature of dissociative disorders is a disturbance or alteration in the normally integrative functions of identity, memory, or consciousness" . If identity is the main function affected, the person is said to have DID. Most non-DID people have one identity comprised of many parts that work harmoniously together. They have only one I-function which consists of a conglomeration of thoughts and feelings formed from connections between many different brain areas. People with MPD, however, have a decentralized, internal network of 2 or more I- functions or "alters," each with its own physiology, behavior, and cognitions. Dissociation often enables victims to maintain a relatively healthy level of functioning because traumatic memories are disconnected from other information in their minds. A multiple presents her view of DID: "We do not SUFFER FROM MPD. We SURVIVE because of MPD" . Living with this disorder is often an extremely lonely, confusing experience. Luckily, there has been much success in treating this disorder thanks to the extensive research conducted into DID etiology.

A small town in the middle of Nowhere, America is suddenly the victim of a serial killer. In a community in which everyone seems to know everyone else, and life could not be more Norman Rockwell-esque if it tried, gruesome deaths and possibly even sexual crimes are occurring at an alarming rate. Is the murderer the doctor who just came to town, or maybe the mailman's new wife? After a long and drawn out investigation, the trusty sheriff (or maybe a local writer - this part is interchangeable) realizes that the true culprit is a housewife who had spent her entire life in Nowhere. How is this possible, one may ask, in this perfect little town, and the answer, of course, is obvious; this poor woman has multiple personalities, and exists as Suburban Suzy most of the time, but morphs into Serial Killer Suzanne before committing a murder. In Hollywood, this scenario is one that is often used when there is a lack of alternative, juicy plot lines available. Known officially as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
