Digestive Disorders About the Center About the Center Services Services ... Staff Magee Clinical Services Women with Physical Disabilities Fetal Heart Program and Pelvic Floor Disorders Women and Digestive Disorders Digestive disorders affect more than half of the American population
and result in nearly 45 million visits to healthcare providers each year. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) alone affects 10 to 20 percent of adults. Such disorders can cause embarrassment, discomfort, and without medical attention, some can be fatal. As a leader in women's healthcare, Magee-Womens Hospital is committed to identifying why and how digestive disorders affect women and men differently. Research has uncovered some important evidence in the connection between digestive disorders and women. For example, women who use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen) to relieve menstrual pain are increasing their risk of intestinal inflammation. It is also known that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and any history of prolonged steroid use increase the risk of osteoporosis for menopausal women. But it is still not clear why:
  • Women get IBS two to three times more than men The incidence of Crohn's disease diagnosed in younger women
has increased over the past few decades The rate of sigmoidoscopy is significantly lower in women than men
  • The experts at the Digestive Disorders Center at Magee-Womens Hospital are equipped with the most up-to-date research and clinical information, providing women with the best plan of treatment on an individual basis.

Digestive Disorders ~ IBS What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a name given to a group of symptoms (a syndrome) affecting the digestive tract. It is a disorder in which the intestinal tract does not work in an orderly fashion and is diagnosed after other diseases have been ruled out. Symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating and often diarrhea or constipation. Other names are irritable colon, spastic colon and "nervous stomach." IBS is one of the most common digestive disorders and affects some 22 million Americans. For unknown reasons IBS affects about twice as many women as men and begins most commonly in young adulthood, sometimes in adolescence. IBS is NOT life threatening and seldom leads to complications or cancer. IBS is a real disorder in which the intestine is overly sensitive to various stimuli such as foods, drugs (caffeine, tobacco, alcohol) and is influenced by your emotions and tension. What are symptoms of Irritable BowelSyndrome?

Scientists can see right inside the intestines using fibre optics. Thousands of flexible optical fibres are bundled together in a tube. They carry an image back from inside the patient to the eyepie. The doctor can see directly into the patients guts. Sigmoidoscopy
To examine the large intestine (the lower part of the colon called the sigmoid), doctors perform a sigmoidoscopy. The sigmoidoscope is similar to an endoscope but it is inserted through the anus and passes up into the large intestine. The doctor can take samples of the lining ( biopsies ) to check for infection or cancerous growths.
