The rest of the symptomatic population will remain by default’ suffers of the “irritable bowel syndrome” Most members of this symptomatic group will have other dysfunction associated with and probably caused by their digestive problems. Those who receive the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome will often receive inadequate or inappropriate advice and will be prescribed medication with limited efficacy. Very few long suffering patients will receive adequate instruction in effective diet revision. Crohn’s, Celiac disease and Ulcerative Colitis are three of the more serious diagnoses that imply a long-term tendency to digestive tract disease. These digestive tract diseases are immune-mediated, with increased permeability of the digestive tract, and are associated with a long list of whole body, immune-mediated diseases. Patients with these conditions are often symptomatic for many years before the diagnosis is made.

Revolutionizing surgery with innovative techniques
For many surgical procedures, the method of choice has shifted from traditional open surgery to the use of less invasive means. These minimally invasive alternatives usually result in less pain, scarring and recovery time for the patient, as well as reduced health-care costs. This trend is predicted to continue, with estimates that as many as 70 percent of all high-volume surgeries performed in the United States will be done via laparoscopic techniques by the year 2000. The surgeons at Allegheny General are dedicated to bringing these surgical advances to patients as quickly as possible. To that end, the hospital created the Allegheny Center for Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery. Particular focuses of the center are laparoscopic approaches to all areas of general, urologic, neuro- surgical, gynecologic, colorectal and cardiothoracic surgery. The treatment team includes specialists practicing in the areas of cardiothoracic surgery, gynecologic surgery, general surgery, colon and rectal surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, urologic surgery and oncologic surgery. Combining expertise with research
Surgeons of the Allegheny Center for Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery were the first in the tri-state region, and among the first in North America, to use minimally invasive approaches to diagnose and treat a number of coronary, thoracic, colorectal, spinal, esophageal and breast disorders.

Digestive Disorders The Center for Digestive Disorders at Saint Mary's Hospital is a self-contained one-stop unit serving the needs of gastroenterology patients from throughout the area. Procedures at the center include routine colonoscopy screenings for the early detection and prevention of colon cancer and endoscopy to diagnose common digestive concerns, such as acid reflux and ulcers. The unit is conveniently located on the second floor of the main building of the hospital for a fully streamlined patient experience, from registration and check in to discharge. Twelve physicians and six registered nurses are active in the Center for Digestive Disorders at Saint Mary's. Because many procedures require patients to fast, exams begin as early as 7:30 a.m. to get patients in and out of the hospital early with minimal inconvenience or discomfort. The colonoscopy takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Most patients are on their way home within a couple of hours, after a short recuperation and a consultation with their doctor. Digestive Disorders Digestive Disorders Programs and Services at ViaHealth Physicians and Appointment Information Support groups and Educational Offerings Local Community Resources ... N-Z Each year, 62 million Americans are diagnosed with digestive disorders, ranging from the occasional upset stomach to the more life-threatening colorectal cancer. They encompass disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Consider the following:
  • Sixty to 70 million persons are affected by all digestive diseases.
  • Thirteen percent of all hospitalizations are for digestive disorders.
  • Digestive disorders account for 50 million physician office visits per year.
  • Digestive disorders cost $107 billion - $87 billion in direct medical costs and $20 billion in indirect costs each year.
Most digestive diseases are very complex, with subtle symptoms, and the causes of many remain unknown. They may be inherited, or develop from multiple factors such as stress, fatigue, diet, or smoking. Abusing alcohol imposes the greatest risk for digestive diseases. Reaching a diagnosis requires a thorough and accurate medical history and physical examination. Some patients may need to undergo more extensive diagnostic evaluations, including laboratory tests, endoscopic procedures, and imaging techniques. Physicians who specialize in the treatment of digestive problems are called gastroenterologists.
