When it goes awry, it generally affects our total well-being. Whether it's mild nausea, a nasty virus, or a chronic disorder such as irritable bowel syndrome, a disorder of the digestive tract is usually impossible to ignore. If the condition persists, it can undermine our total health, eventually threatening our very lives.
How the Digestive System Works
The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a long hollow tube stretching from the head to the end of the body, including the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas are also important parts of this far-reaching system.

The Digestive Disorders Resource Center provides access to critical information about digestive disorders from a variety of Hopkins publications. All materials are written or reviewed by Hopkins physicians such as Sergey Kantsevoy, M.D., assistant professor of medicine, and Simeon Margolis M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine. Digestive disorders encompass a wide array of conditions that affect the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. These conditions vary in severity from the minor annoyance of mild heartburn to potentially life-threatening illnesses, such as a perforated ulcer. Estimates indicate that about 95 million Americans are affected by gastrointestinal disorders. In 1996, about 3.7 million ulcers and 6 million cases of frequent indigestion were reported in the United States. And in 1999, digestive diseases prompted about 45 million visits to outpatient care facilities. Although digestive disorders can affect people of any age, many of these problems occur more frequently in older individuals. Living with a digestive disorder can be a challenge, but people with digestive disorders can better deal with their condition by learning as much as possible about its causes, effects, and treatments.

Stomach Cancer
The Stomach
After food has been swallowed it passes down the gullet and enters the stomach. The stomach wall produces fluid and acid to soften the food and begin digestion. The stomach churns and mixes the food until it is suitable to be passed into the intestine where it will be further digested and absorbed into the blood stream. In order to carry out its job the stomach has an outer muscle wall to enable it to churn the food and pass it into the intestine. It also has an internal lining which secretes the acid, fluid and other chemicals that are added to the food. The activity of the stomach is controlled by nerves and chemicals that are triggered by the sight or smell of food, the act of eating, stretching of the stomach and the presence of food within it. How does cancer arise? Stomach cancer arises from changes in the internal lining of the stomach, the part that is responsible for secreting the acid, fluid and other chemicals. This layer is complicated because as well as having to secrete, it must also protect itself from the acid that it produces, this would otherwise damage the lining and cause an ulcer. The surface is lined with numerous delicate little cells. These are specialized and live for only a few days, after which they drop off into the inside of the stomach. They are replaced by new cells that are generated deep in the lining. The formation and death of the lining cells of the stomach is kept under close control by the body. Each cell develops for its special function and has to link with the other cells close by to form a team which will either secrete acid, protect from acid, secrete other chemicals or act as hormone cells.

They affect 50 percent of people over age 50. Diets low in fiber are thought to be a major cause. Straining at defecation to evacuate hard stools also seems to promote their development. A high-fiber diet and prompt, strain-free defecation help relieve mildly symptomatic hemorrhoids. Local swelling and pain can be decreased with local anesthetic creams, lotions, or suppositories; astringents; or cold compresses. For those with severe symptoms, rubber band ligation, cryosurgery, injection therapy, or surgical removal may be needed. Constipation is the term given for infrequent or difficult evacuation of small, hard stools, accompanied by mild abdominal discomfort. When the condition is chronic, it may include nausea, stomach rumbling, appetite loss, and malaise. Constipation is a common condition that affects mostly the very young and the aged. While the number of bowel movements is variable in the general population, a normal individual should have at least three per week, or, ideally, one daily.
