CARING FOR PETS WITH CHRONIC DIARRHOEA
The two most common signs associated with disturbances of the gastrointestinal tract are vomiting and diarrhoea. THE DIGESTIVE TRACT For pets to obtain the nourishment they need for their daily life, food must be broken down into smaller nutrients that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. The process of breaking down food particles is called digestion. This process begins in the stomach, and continues in the intestines where the nutrients are absorbed. The liver and pancreas produce substances that aid these processes. Little of the digestive process occurs in the large intestine. Here, water is re-absorbed into the bloodstream. This is important not only in the production of firm stools, but in maintaining the body's water balance. CANINE EXOCRINE PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY (EPI) The pancreas is a V-shaped gland which lies in close proximity to the stomach. The pancreas is important for the production of the hormone insulin (endocrine function) and pancreatic juice (exocrine function). Pancreatic juice contains enzymes which are important for the digestion of proteins and carbohydrates, but predominantly enzymes which digest fats - called lipases. Some pets (mainly dogs, and occasionally cats) are only able to produce small amounts of pancreatic juice and suffer from a reduced ability to digest nutrients (especially fats).

Caring for Pets with Acute Diarrhoea
The two most common signs associated with disturbances of the gastrointestinal tract are vomiting and diarrhoea. This article explains how the digestive tract works and how to look after your pet with an acute intestinal upset. Acute diseases (rapid onset, short duration) if managed correctly can reduce the risk of a more chronic (long duration) problem occurring. Little of the digestive process occurs in the large intestine. Here, water is re-absorbed into the bloodstream. This is important not only in the production of firm stools, but in maintaining the body's water balance. Inflammation of the intestinal tract can be caused by a variety of things, including infections (bacteria, viruses), eating spoiled food or rubbish, food allergies and some medications. Sudden changes or additions to the diet, such as feeding table scraps or milk, can also cause diarrhoea in some animals. Other diseases, such as kidney disease and liver disease can also result in the development of gastroenteritis.

Treatment Description Diarrhoea is an abnormal increase in the frequency and liquidity of the stools. The amount of water in stool each day is generally not more than 200 ml for an adult. When it is above this amount, it is called diarrhoea. However, the definition of diarrhoea also depends on what is normal for each person. Diarrhoea is not itself a disease, but can be a symptom of several underlying diseases.
    Diarrhoea and intestinal functioning
The colon, or large intestine, absorbs fluid from digested food particles that pass through it, forming semi-solid stools. If the intestinal lining becomes irritated, the intestines push stools through too quickly, fluid is not reabsorbed, and the stool produced is very watery. The inflamed intestinal lining itself may also leak excess fluid, adding to the water lost through diarrhoea. Diarrhoea has a positive effect in that it helps to rapidly expel dangerous microbes from the digestive tract.

Browse by Review Group A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 21 May 2000. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Traveller's diarrhoea is a syndrome frequently encountered in persons crossing an international boundary. Diarrhoea can lead to significant discomfort and interference with travel plans. Bacterial pathogens are a frequent cause of this syndrome. Several antibiotics have been tested for efficacy in reducing the duration and severity of the illness. Objectives: The aims of this review were to assess the effects of antibiotics on traveller's diarrhoea in relation to duration of illness, severity of illness, and adverse effects of medications. Search strategy: The Cochrane Collaboration Trials Register, MEDLINE, and EMBASE were searched. Additional trials were identified by hand searching. Content experts were contacted.

Browse by Review Group A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 03 November 2003. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Rotaviruses cause viral gastroenteritis and result in more deaths from diarrhoea in children under 5 years of age than any other single agent, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Objectives: To assess rotavirus vaccines in relation to preventing rotavirus diarrhoea, death, and adverse events. Search strategy: We searched the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group's trial register (October 2003), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library Issue 3, 2003), MEDLINE (1966 to October 2003), EMBASE (January 1980 to October 2003), LILACS (1982 to October 2003), Biological Abstracts (January 1982 to October 2003), reference lists of articles, and contacted researchers and rotavirus vaccine manufacturers. Selection criteria: Randomized controlled trials comparing rotavirus vaccines to placebo, no intervention, or other rotavirus vaccines in children and adults.

Catabolic state results in flattening of intestinal villi, crypt atrophy, reduced levels of mucosal digestive proteins and decreased production of gut hormones (eg gastrin, cholecystokinin). Also possible that mucosal changes result from luminal nutritional deprivation rather than overall nutritional state as the same changes occur in patients fed intravenously. Impairment of colonic fermentation of carbohydrates possibly the most important factor in antibiotic induced diarrhoea in enterally fed patients. Unabsorbed carbohydrates are usually fermented by colonic bacteria to short chain fatty acids. These are a major stimulus to sodium and water absorption in the large intestine so the problem caused by the osmotic load of the unfermented carbohydrates is compounded by decreased colonic salt and water absorption

The term is used to describe an increase in frequency of bowel motions, or increased stool liquidity, or sometimes a sense of faecal urgency. A textbook definition of diarrhoea is: "the passage of greater than 300 ml of liquid faeces in 24 hours". However, this is not a very useful definition, as stool quantity is hardly ever measured. Common causes As mentioned above, the causes of diarrhoea are myriad. To determine which causes are more likely, a doctor will need to know, amongst other things, a patient's normal bowel habit, and how long the diarrhoea has been present. The more common causes are listed below:

Needle acupuncture was applied at the umbilical scar of a Highland Zebu steer with diarrhoea due to paratuberculosis. The acupuncture resulted in a sixteen-days cessation of diarrhoea and alleviation of clinical signs. It was suggested that acupuncture therapy could be a potential component of the treatment of Johne’s disease and other diarrhoeal diseases. Introduction Acupuncture, an ancient Chinese art of healing, is used to treat a wide variety of diseases. In different parts of the world, intensified research is going on to understand its mechanism of action. However, studies conducted so far indicate that acupuncture stimulates the body’s cellular and humoral defence systems . In Ethiopia, the only documented information on the veterinary practice of acupuncture is by members of Chinese Veterinary Team who reported on a successful treatment of equine colic

However, if your baby passes watery and greenish coloured stools, it is a sign of diarrhoea. Diarrhoea accompanied with vomiting is called gastro-enteritis. It is very important for your baby to have plenty of fluids to drink as the fluids being lost through diarrhoea need to be replaced or the baby may get dehydrated. If you are breastfeeding, you may need to offer cool, boiled water between feeds. If bottlefeeding, you may be advised to make up diluted feeds for a few days.

DIARRHOEA The fleshy fibres on each side of this opening act as a sphincter. Passing between the xiphoid and costal origins in front are the superior epigastric arteries, while the other terminal branches of the internal mammaries, the musculo-phrenics, pass through between two costal origins. Through the crura pass the splanchnic nerves, and in addition to these the left crus is pierced by the vena azygos minor. The sympathetic nerves usually enter the abdomen behind the internal arcuate ligaments. The phrenic nerves, which are the main supply of the diaphragm, divide before reaching the muscle and pierce it in a number of places to enter its abdominal surface, but some of the lower intercostal nerves assist in the supply. The last thoracic or subcostal nerves pass behind the external arcuate ligament. For the action of the diaphragm see RESPIRATORY SYSTEM. DIARBEKR DIARY
