W hat is a normal bowel habit ? People vary a lot in how often they open their bowels - usually between three times a day and three times a week in the U.K. A stool should be solid, but moist and easy to pass. W hat does the bowel do ? Receives food and liquid we eat and drink. Absorbs most of the nutrients from food and drink into the blood-stream. Secretes fluid from the body into the gut. Propels its contents from the stomach down the length of the bowel to the back passage (anus). Excretes waste material as stool. W hat is diarrhoea ? Diarrhoea means there are frequent, loose or liquid stools. There may be a gripey abdominal pain (colic) which is less after a stool is passed. Acute diarrhoea - comes on suddenly and lasts a short time. Chronic diarrhoea - affects someone over a long period of time. Some people pass frequent, small solid stools with a sense of urgency. This is not true diarrhoea and occurs when the rectum is irritable as in the irritable bowel syndrome or inflamed as in colitis. W hat causes diarrhoea ?

DIARRHOEA Three or more liquid or semi-liquid bowel movements in a day may mean you have diarrhoea. You may also have vomiting and/or a high temperature. You could also have abdominal cramps and nausea. Diarrhoea will make you feel weak because important body fluids and salts are lost. Diarrhoea is caused by various viral infections (gastro-enteritis) or by eating food that has gone off (food poisoning). Nearly all cases should clear by themselves in two to five days, without having to take any medicine so long as these self-care recommendations are followed. Babies Baby diarrhoea is recognised by an increase in the number of motions which become more and more liquid. This can develop quickly in babies and can lead to problems if left. A baby's diarrhoea often looks green.

http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/diarrhoea.htm
Diarrhoea. Diarrhoea can be as minor or as major a problem as it can be in human beings The number one rule is that if the diarrhoea is fluid and has the added symptoms of the guinea pig's coat being fluffed up and it is sitting in a corner looking thoroughly miserable then it is a major problem. It must be taken to a vet P.D.Q., for it will be in need of an antibiotic, and quickly!. There are several diseases that guinea pigs can suffer from which can prove rapidly fatal and the symptoms I have just described are indicative of them. If the diarrhoea is fluid but the guinea pig is alert and though not eating as well, at least interested, the first thing to do is give it half a tablet of Diocalm, powdered down and given mixed with a small amount of water. This is a product formulated for human beings who have diarrhoea which is very safe and effective for use upon guinea pigs. The next thing to give, and this is very important, is a tablet of Buscopan, powdered down in the same way as the Diocalm. This is also a human medicine, which is a gut relaxant and analgesic. This eases the griping pains as it relaxes the gut spasms, which makes the animal feel better, which is half the battle. Repeat the Diocalm every ten to twelve hours but as soon as there is a sign of things beginning to firm up, stop the treatment. Usually two to three half tablets are sufficient.

The Facts About...
Clostridium difficile diarrhoea
What is Clostridium difficile?
Clostridium difficile (so called because when it was first discovered it was difficult to grow in the laboratory) is a cause of diarrhoea, which is usually acquired in hospital. Although in most cases it causes a relatively mild illness, occasionally and particularly in elderly patients, it may result in serious illness and even death. The bacterium produces two toxins which are responsible for the diarrhoea and which damage the cells lining the bowel. However, not all strains of C. difficile produce toxin; these strains are unlikely to cause disease and patients colonised by them remain healthy. In addition, the bacterium can form spores which enable it to survive in the environment outside the body and which protect the organism against heat and chemical disinfectants.
What does Clostridium difficile cause?
C. difficile infection is usually acquired in hospital , and almost all patients who develop C. difficile

diarrhoea. diarrhoea is defined as an abnormal increase in the frequency, fluidity and volume of faeces due to an excessive faecal water content.
http://www.isabellevets.co.uk/health_advice/dog/info/diarrhoeadog.htm
Health Diarrhoea Diarrhoea is defined as an abnormal increase in the frequency, fluidity and volume of faeces due to an excessive faecal water content. H ow the disease works in the body Diarrhoea occurs due to changes in the cycle of fluid absorption and secretion across the intestinal wall between the bowel lining and the systemic system. Movement of fluid, nutrients and chemicals across the intestinal wall can be by osmosis (passive) and active with chemical pathways, vitamins, bacteria and energy all being involved. The system is complex and the break down of any one component may lead to diarrhoea. Owner's assessment The importance of the owner's assessment is to determine the importance of the symptom and whether it warrants professional help by visiting the veterinarian or whether home care and nursing will suffice. The following symptoms should be noted?
  • Frequency of diarrhoea? How many times per day? How long has your dog had diarrhoea for? Are there secondary symptoms such as vomiting, temperature rise, straining? Does your dog appear bright, collapsed?

Diarrhoea Diarrhoea is a symptom of a problem, not a disease. It is a result of the body's attempt to rid itself of something harmful.
Diarrhoea is characterised by frequent and loose watery stools. Symptoms including abdominal pain, thirst, and nausea or vomiting may accompany diarrhoea.
Acute diarrhoea lasts for hours or days, and is normally caused by such things as food poisoning or bacterial infection. It should not be suppressed by drugs that alleviate diarrhoea, but encouraged as part of an extreme natural eliminatory process. Suppressing diarrhoea prevents the body from eliminating the substances that are causing it in the first place.
Chronic diarrhoea is that which occurs over a long period and generally tends to come-and-go, often interspersed with bouts of constipation. It is often present in individuals diagnosed with IBS

http://www.drlockie.com/disease/diarr.htm
Diarrhoea Failure of the large intestine to absorb water from faeces; this can happen with Irritable bowel syndrome (diarrhoea alternates with constipation), Gastroenteritis (diarrhoea and vomiting), Ulcerative colitis (blood in faeces), Food poisoning (diarrhoea and vomiting), worms and other intestinal parasites (see Treadworms , tapeworms), lactose intolerance and other food intolerances, and even Anxiety . Certain drugs, especially antibiotics cause diarrhoea; also antacids because of their magnesium content, and so does a lack of Vitamin B or folate; too much Vitamin D can cause constipation as well as diarrhoea. Liquid stools can also be the price of eating too many purses or prunes. Chronic diarrhoea can cause potassium deficiency. If diarrhoea continues for more than 48 hours, or is accompanied by Fever or blood in faeces, consult your doctor if there is no improvement in 2 hours ; regardless of the cause, person may be seriously dehydrated. Orthodox treatment consists of rehydration with electrolyte solutions for 12-24 hours, followed by investigation and, if persistent, antidiarrhoeal agents such as kaolin and morphine or drugs which inhibit peristalsis or cause constipation. A tendency towards diarrhoea is best treated constitutionally, although in acute attacks she remedies below may be used.

A-Z Illnesses and Conditions
Diarrhoea By Dr Rob Hicks Diarrhoea is the passing of loose or liquid stools frequently. Acute diarrhoea usually occurs suddenly and only lasts a short time. Chronic diarrhoea continues for a long period of time. Diarrhoea is often accompanied by wind, stomach pains, cramps, nausea, vomiting, or a headache. The area around the back passage may feel very sore. Diarrhoea can cause piles to develop. Most people experience diarrhoea at some time in their life. It often occurs when travelling abroad. Common causes of diarrhoea include food poisoning, gastro-enteritis, anxiety, excess alcohol, some foods, and side effects of certain drug treatments. Good personal and food hygiene, appropriate storage and cooking of foods, and avoiding certain foods when travelling will reduce the risk of food poisoning. Eating a healthy and varied diet, only drinking alcohol within safe recommended amounts, and keeping stress under control will help prevent diarrhoea.

Parasites
Gastroenteritis can also be caused by parasites. Common parasites that cause infections include Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidia, which live in some lakes and streams. They are spread by contaminated water, or from person to person. Giardia is often the cause of holiday gastroenteritis and can be effectively treated with antibiotics.
Other food problems
Some food allergies, for example an allergy to strawberries, can lead to gastroenteritis.
