Further information
Links to other Dercum sites A chronic, almost unknown disease, described for the first time by the American neurologist Francis X. Dercum in 1888. Neither the cause of the disease, nor which sort, is yet known. Most common symptoms:
Pain, definite or indefinite swellings or lipomas, weight gain of maybe 50%, fatigue, difficulty in walking. The disease occurs mainly among women and increases with age. In spite of the fact that the disease has been known and described for more than 100 years very little research is going on - a fact that must relate to the disease being so rare. The WHO system of diagnoses ICD-10 places it under the number E 88-2.
Please notice that this is a private homepage based only on my personal knowledge and cannot replace any contact with your physician.
Originally the primary goal of making this site was to spread information about this disease in Danish as almost nothing is available in Danish regarding this subject. But realizing that also foreigners visit the homepage an English translation has now been added.

Anders’ syndrome
Dercum-Vitaut syndrome Synonyms: Adiposalgia, adiposis dolorosa, adipositas dolorosa, adipositas tuberosa simplex, fibrolipomatosis dolorosa, lipalgia, lipomatosis dolorosa, neurolipomatosis. Associated persons: James Meschter Anders Francis Xavier Dercum Unknown Vitaut Description: Rare condition characterized by scattered areas of painful cutaneous nodules or fat accumulations. Development of the nodular, tender lipomas is gradual with localization largely to forearms and thighs. It occurs chiefly in menopausal obese women of middle age and may be familial. Symptoms are asthenia, headache, frequently amenorrhoea and ecchymoses; diminution of sweating. Mental depression and deterioration have been observed in an appreciable number of these patients. Long progressive course. Death often caused by cardiac failure. Most cases of this rare disorder are sporadic but autosomal dominant inheritance has been documented. Dercum in 1888 first described the syndrome in a fifty-one year old woman and presented three more cases in 1892, writing:

Familial Multiple Lipomas
This is a condition in which groups of fat cells in the subcutaneous tissues begin to grow spontaneously and produce multiple fatty lumps underneath the skin. These are benign fatty tumors or lipomas. This condition is quite common and is frequently genetic in origin, due to a mutation of the mitochondrial DNA. The presentation of this disease is variable. Most patients have multiple small fatty subcutaneous nodules that are painless. The number of nodules may vary from very few to many. They are mostly located on the arms, forearms, legs and trunk but they can occur in the neck, face and buttocks. In some patients, if neglected, these fatty lumps can grow to a large size and can make the patient appear grotesque. While these lumps are usually painless, in some patients they are painful and if large, they are subcategorized into an entity called . This disease was first described by Dr. F. X. Dercum in 1888, when he found a patient with large painful subcutaneous tumors. The correct medical term is called Adiposis Dolorosa. In this aspect of familial multiple lipomatosis, the fatty lumps are painful. The degree of pain varies from being mild to severe. The cause of the pain is unknown.
