Songs of the Great Depression
"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime," lyrics by Yip Harburg, music by Gorney Harburg (1931)
They used to tell me I was building a dream, and so I followed the mob,
When there was earth to plow, or guns to bear, I was always there right on the job.
They used to tell me I was building a dream, with peace and glory ahead,
Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?
Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad; now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once I built a tower, up to the sun, brick, and rivet, and lime;
Once I built a tower, now it's done. Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,
And I was the kid with the drum!
Say, don't you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.
Why don't you remember, I'm your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell

Lecture 18
Crashing Hopes: The Great Depression
In 1929, Yale University economist Irving Fisher stated confidently: "The nation is marching along a permanently high plateau of prosperity." Five days later, the bottom dropped out of the stock market and ushered in the Great Depression, the worst economic downturn in American history. Although Americans often believe that the Crash was the starting point of the Great Depression, many historians point out that it wasn't the sole cause. This lecture examines the roots of the Crash and the effect of the Great Depression on the American public. Some questions to keep in mind:
  • Why were Americans so confident in the stock market in the years leading up to the Great Depression? How did the Psychology of Consumption shape the causes and effects of the Crash? How did stock market investing change during the 1920s? Who were the main investors and how did they pay for their investments? Explain the statement: "By 1929, much of the money that was invested in the stock market did not actually exist."
  • 167. COPING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS
Paper discusses illness as a process with stages crisis, isolation, anger, reconstruction, intermittent depression, and renewal. Advice on how to deal with new situation. Adapted from After The Diagnosis by Dr. JoAnn LeMaistre
    http://www.alpineguild.com/COPING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS.html
COPING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS (This is adapted from the book After The Diagnosis by Dr. JoAnn LeMaistre. 1985, 1993, and 1999 by JoAnn LeMaistre.) JoAnn Le Maistre received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology, delivered a daughter, and learned she had multiple sclerosis all within the period of a few months. Dr. LeMaistre has developed a successful practice counseling patients and their families. She is a sought-after speaker, lecturer, and teacher. Her books, After The Diagnosis, and the hardbound edition, Beyond Rage, have helped thousands of chronic illness patients, their families, and health care providers to cope effectively. Her daughter has now graduated from college. And Dr. LeMaistre has learned to live a full life, in spite of the handicaps of her MS. She is an inspirational example of what it means to be able-hearted when you can no longer be able-bodied. Traditionally, the experience of serious illness has been approached in two ways: (1) a gloomy perspective of resignation, self-denial, and helplessness, or (2) a Pollyanna approach that denies altogether that there has been a real trauma. Both of these perspectives distort and disguise the reality of chronic illness. The Pollyanna approach is typified by and fueled by personal stories or testimonials of complete recovery from extreme illness or disabling conditions. These stories tug at the heartstrings and catch the fancy of all who read them. Besides creating false hope by overplaying the likelihood of complete recovery, these stories consistently underplay the sadness and feelings of worthlessness that are part of the legacy of any physical or emotional trauma.

is an ever increasing problem What are normal emotions? Depression is when you are "sadder than sad." It has been said that we live in the "Age of Anxiety." We also live in a time of depression. In American society so many people experience depression that it has been called the "common cold of emotional illness." About 5% of the population or 15 million people are depressed at any one time. About one in six people experience a significant depressive episode at some point in life. Depression is a definite problem with the elderly, but the age of onset is dropping and depression is showing up more and more in adolescents. Normal Emotions Life is filled a variety of experiences and depending upon life circumstances it is quite appropriate to be feeling any of a number of positive and negative emotions. Such emotional states include excitement, frustration, fear, happiness, anger, sadness, and joy with many more possibilities. All of these emotional states are normal reactions to specific life events. Even when they are experienced as unpleasant, they are normal reactions. These same emotions, however, can intensify into abnormal states if they become an overreaction to the circumstances. For example, if a store clerk is rude, you may respond with normal irritation and complain to the manager. If your irritation quickly escalates to anger and rage then you may create such a scene that you are now the rude and obnoxious person.

DEPRESSION REALLY SUCKS! It needlessly sucks happiness and joy out of a person and may even suck the life out too if it can't be brought under control. I believe that curing stress- and/or diet-induced depression is extremely simple and quick using magnesium rather than drugs for many people - fortunately! Read my story and check out the facts in the links. Many links are directly to medical articles in the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and other authoritative sources. You may find my story to be important to you. Remember my point of view that depression, and particularly stress- and/or diet-induced depression, and many other "diseases" discussed below are often symptoms of magnesium deficiency (either directly or indirectly through excess stress) and not psychoses. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports that a sign of magnesium deficiency is depression NIH defined magnesium deficiency symptoms have three categories:
