The Ness Foundation
The Ness Foundation (previously The Highland Psychiatric Research Foundation HPRF) is a charitable organisation, formed in 1998 from an internationally recognised research group and in 1999 became an associate institute of the UHI Millennium Institute. The Ness Foundation's mission:
  • To improve the quality of life of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders and other related conditions, by conducting research to discover safer, more effective diagnostics and treatments. To break down the stigma that surrounds such conditions, which is frequently more disabling than the illness itself, through the involvement of patients and caregivers and the wide dissemination of its research findings.
The conditions that our research is focused on include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, dyspraxia, dyslexia, depression and ADHD. Our principal area of research involves the role of lipids in these disorders.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A FRIEND IS DEPRESSED
A Guide for Teenagers (posted by Hopkins Technology) U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Service Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration As a teenager, you know that these school years can be complicated and demanding. Deep down, you are not quite sure of who you are, what you want to be, or whether the choices you make from day to day are the best decisions. Sometimes the many changes and pressures you are facing threaten to overwhelm you. So it isn't surprising that from time to time you or one of your friends feels "down" or discouraged. But what about those times when a friend's activity and outlook on life stay "down" for weeks and begin to affect your relationship? If you know someone like this, your friend might be suffering from depression. As a friend, you can help. 1. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT DEPRESSION. Q. What is depression? A. Depression is more than the blues or the blahs; it is more than the normal, everyday ups and downs. When that "down" mood, along with other symptoms, lasts for more than a couple of weeks, the condition may be clinical depression. Clinical depression is a serious health problem that affects the total person. In addition to feelings, it can change behavior, physical health and appearance, academic performance, and the ability to handle everyday decisions and pressures. Q. What causes clinical depression?

Families for Depression Awareness is pleased that last week the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made a clear statement that families, patients, and clinicians should more closely monitor the effects of antidepressants in the treatment of depression. It is important to emphasize that the FDA has not warned against the use of antidepressants, only the inadequate monitoring of their use. [ READ MORE

NEW - from the journal
Human givens
Mental health is the result of our emotional and physical needs being met well – using the resources nature gave us. When they are not met well, for whatever reason, individuals and families experience stress overload with an increase in various expressions of emotional arousal – anger, anxiety, trauma, depression, greed and addiction. This can lead, in turn, to illness and social problems that impact on the whole of society. Improving our understanding of the new information around these issues, and how to help people cope better with the pressures of the modern world, are the aims behind these videos of seminars, therapy sessions and explanatory documentaries. available now in production now coming soon who are we ... the journal

I'm located in Seattle's University Village area and provide treatment for: Relationship Issues Life and Career Transitions Divorce Adjustment Physical and Sexual Abuse Depression Adoption Stress / Anger Management Parenting What interferes with people getting started with counseling? There are a number of possibilities. Someone may be just unfamiliar with what counseling is. They never went to a counselor and do not know anyone (family or friends) who have. So it is more of a fear of the unknown. Perhaps they are afraid of feeling criticized/judged for their behavior, thoughts, feelings etc. The purpose of counseling is to provide people with a better understanding of themselves and the links between their thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Sometimes people in need of counseling are feeling so hopeless that they cannot imagine someone/something being helpful. It is like wearing a pair of sun glasses, everything appears darker. Some people see themselves as self reliant and it is difficult to ask someone for assistance. Asking for help feels like a sign of weakness. However it actually takes strength and courage to initiate counseling and buckle down and focus on solving one’s problems. Click

How Psychotherapy Helps People Recover From Depression
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 17 million adult Americans suffer from depression during any one-year period. Many do not even recognize that they have a condition that can be treated very effectively. This question-and-answer fact sheet discusses depression with a focus on the ways in which psychotherapy can help a depressed person recover.

How does depression differ from occasional sadness?

Everyone feels sad or 'blue' on occasion. Most people grieve over upsetting life experiences such as a major illness, loss of job, a death in the family or divorce. These feelings of grief tend to become less intense on their own as time goes on.
Depression occurs when feelings of extreme sadness or despair last for at least two weeks or longer and when they interfere with activities of daily living such as working, or even eating and sleeping. Depressed individuals tend to feel helpless and hopeless and to blame themselves for having these feelings. Some may have thoughts of death or suicide.
People who are depressed may become overwhelmed and exhausted and stop participating in certain everyday activities altogether. They may withdraw from family and friends.
