YOU ARE IN: Defeat Depression > Home In Memorium At this address until the 21st April 2004 there used to be a site www. defeatdepression.org, the only independent site in the UK providing evidence based information to consumers. It is no more. Why - because nobody who could have helped gave a damn. The object of this site was to bridge the gap between science and the consumer in mental health care, especially depression, anxiety and related disorders. The site contained a very extensive amount of information, about recognition, treatment, latest news, research and all the information that we necessary to educate and help consumers. The Government and other bodies have made a commitment to educating consumers, but when it comes to mental health there is apparently no funding depression. We only needed two full time staff. The site was initially funded by several generous and forward looking donors, but since then we have tried all avenues and been unsuccessful. The small amounts of funds have come from individuals who value the site and even if they have been out of work have been kind enough to try and help. This situation is both intolerable and disgraceful and it yet another blow to the large community of people with mental health problems. It also speaks to the stigma surrounding mental illness - had this been a sexy illness I am sure would have had no trouble raising significant funds. Mental health is not sexy it is a silent and often fatal epidemic.
