At this address until the 21st April 2004 there used to be a site www. defeatdepression.org, the only independent site in the UK providing evidence based information to consumers. It is no more. Why - because nobody who could have helped gave a damn. The object of this site was to bridge the gap between science and the consumer in mental health care, especially depression, anxiety and related disorders. The site contained a very extensive amount of information, about recognition, treatment, latest news, research and all the information that we necessary to educate and help consumers. The Government and other bodies have made a commitment to educating consumers, but when it comes to mental health there is apparently no funding depression. We only needed two full time staff. The site was initially funded by several generous and forward looking donors, but since then we have tried all avenues and been unsuccessful. The small amounts of funds have come from individuals who value the site and even if they have been out of work have been kind enough to try and help. This situation is both intolerable and disgraceful and it yet another blow to the large community of people with mental health problems. It also speaks to the stigma surrounding mental illness - had this been a sexy illness I am sure would have had no trouble raising significant funds. Mental health is not sexy it is a silent and often fatal epidemic.

DEPRESSION IS TREATABLE!

Unfortunately, only about 1/3 of those who are depressed actually get treatment...
...While up to 80-90% who do get treatment can feel better, usually within a few weeks!
Approximately 18 million American adults or 10% of the population suffer from a depressive illness in any given year. Depression affects nearly twice as many women as men. Depression is a serious health condition affecting millions of people each year. The total cost in human suffering is impossible to estimate. Depression often impairs many aspects of our everyday lives and affects not only those who are depressed, but also those who care about the depressed person. No one should have to endure the painful symptoms of depression since very effective treatments are available.

Insight into anxiety-related problems and a self-help approach to deal with them
The day our experiences result in extreme anxiety or panic attack about which we become acutely aware,
from that day on our lives have changed. From that day on our subconscious takes over in a way that we
previously didn't need it. We now become driven to find reasons and answers, driven to constantly watch
ourselves and driven to look out for failure and negative outcomes, to concentrate on that one bad quality
or weakness among the many good and strong ones. We are driven to behave in ways that make us angry
or scared, despairing and frustrated, ways that make us more anxious, ways we believe help to protect us.
Understanding Anxiety and Panic Disorders, Phobias, OCD and Depression
Generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorders, phobias (social phobias, agoraphobia and many specific ones), OCD (obsessive compulsive disorders) and many forms of depression can overwhelm us and leave us feeling out of control.
They feel as though we are driven to act like this, strengthen with every 'attack' and lead to constant searching for reasons and answers. Involving self-doubt, insecurity and fear, they can appear too powerful to deal with.

95. The Depressed Child - AACAP Facts For Families # 4
Describes the signs and symptoms of depression in children and adolescents/teens. THE DEPRESSED CHILD. No. 4 (10/92), (Updated 8/98).
http://www.aacap.org/publications/factsfam/depressd.htm
T HE D EPRESSED C HILD No. 4 (10/92) (Updated 8/98) N ot only adults become depressed. Children and teenagers also may have depression, which is a treatable illness. Depression is defined as an illness when the feelings of depression persist and interfere with a child or adolescent’s ability to function. About 5 percent of children and adolescents in the general population suffer from depression at any given point in time. Children under stress, who experience loss, or who have attentional, learning, conduct or anxiety disorders are at a higher risk for depression. Depression also tends to run in families. The behavior of depressed children and teenagers may differ from the behavior of depressed adults. Child and adolescent psychiatrists advise parents to be aware of signs of depression in their youngsters. If one or more of these signs of depression persist, parents should seek help:
  • Frequent sadness, tearfulness, crying
  • Hopelessness
  • Decreased interest in activities; or inability to enjoy previously favorite activities
  • Persistent boredom; low energy
