POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION Books on postpartum depression What is Postpartum Depression?
Many new mothers experience "baby blues", a low-grade depression that can last up to 2 weeks after childbirth. Postpartum depression, however, is dark, intense, and long-lasting. If months have gone by since you gave birth, and you are still persistently sad, irritable, having problems sleeping, or you're "just not yourself", you may very likely have postpartum depression. The most common symptom of PPD is insomnia (inability to sleep). Your ob/gyn, primary care physician, or a mental health professional such as a psychologist or psychiatrist can diagnose and treat postpartum depression, or refer you to someone who can. The important thing is to seek help and don't blame yourself. Having postpartum depression does not make you a "bad" or inferior mother in any way. Postpartum depression is thought to be caused by low levels of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol is normally released during times of stress. It raises blood sugar levels and regulates your blood pressure. Cortisol levels rise right before childbirth, then fall dramatically afterward. So, postpartum depression may caused by a "cortisol crash". However, not every woman becomes depressed after childbirth, so this theory is still being questioned.

Introduction
A few years ago, my mother unearthed some pictures of me as a baby which I had never seen before. One showed me at about eight months old, crawling on the grass of Golden Gate Park. I was looking directly at the camera, my tongue sticking out of the corner of my mouth, and I was laughing. My face was lit from within, and looked happy, confident and even a little mischievious. I was absolutely transfixed by that photograph for days. I would continually take it out of my wallet and stare at it, torn between laughter and tears. For a while I couldn't figure out what it was about the picture that drew me. Finally it hit me; this was the only picture of myself as a child that I had seen which showed me laughing. All the photos I had ever seen depicted a child staring solemnly or smiling diffidently, but never laughing. I looked at the Golden Gate Park picture and wished that I had remained that happy, and that depression had not taken away my childhood.

Helping Friends in Trouble: Stress, Depression, and Suicide
Joyce Walker, Youth Development
We all have bad days, or weeks, or even months. We all feel overwhelmed at times. Things usually get better. Sometimes that's hard to remember when you're down. But stress, depression, and even suicide happen in the lives of people young and old.
Failure on a test, a fight with a friend, an argument with a parent, or a put-down by a teacher can be upsetting. Many things that cause problems are beyond our control: parents divorcing, a family moving away, the death of someone close to us, or family financial problems. We all know someone who has broken up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, feared pregnancy, gotten in trouble with the law, or felt utterly deserted and alone.
There are three basic ways of reacting to the problem:
  • You can get angry - scream, shout, throw things, start a fight, or go on a rampage.
  • You can withdraw - take a drink, shut up in a room, take a pill, daydream, stop talking to everyone.

    Depression
    ... beyond madness...
Depression? Pff!

    The Great Depression

http://www.plainfield.k12.in.us/hschool/webq1/webquest.htm The Wall Street stock-market crash of 1929 precipitated the Great Depression, the worst economic downturn in the history of the United States. The depression had devastating effects on the country. The stock market was in shambles. Many banks couldn't continue to operate. Farmers fell into bankruptcy. A quarter of the working force, or 13 million people, were unemployed in 1932, and this was only the beginning. The depression lasted over a decade, with hundreds of thousands of Americans losing their jobs, businesses failing, and financial institutions collapsing.

    Chapter Nine
    The Great Depression (8/8)
Previous Page In October 1929 the stock market crashed, wiping out 40 percent of the paper values of common stock. Even after the stock market collapse, however, politicians and industry leaders continued to issue optimistic predictions for the nation's economy. But the Depression deepened, confidence evaporated and many lost their life savings. By 1933 the value of stock on the New York Stock Exchange was less than a fifth of what it had been at its peak in 1929. Business houses closed their doors, factories shut down and banks failed. Farm income fell some 50 percent. By 1932 approximately one out of every four Americans was unemployed. The core of the problem was the immense disparity between the country's productive capacity and the ability of people to consume. Great innovations in productive techniques during and after the war raised the output of industry beyond the purchasing capacity of U.S. farmers and wage earners. The savings of the wealthy and middle class, increasing far beyond the possibilities of sound investment, had been drawn into frantic speculation in stocks or real estate. The stock market collapse, therefore, had been merely the first of several detonations in which a flimsy structure of speculation had been leveled to the ground. The presidential campaign of 1932 was chiefly a debate over the causes and possible remedies of the Great Depression. Herbert Hoover, unlucky in entering The White House only eight months before the stock market crash, had struggled tirelessly, but ineffectively, to set the wheels of industry in motion again. His Democratic opponent, Franklin D. Roosevelt, already popular as the governor of New York during the developing crisis, argued that the Depression stemmed from the U.S. economy's underlying flaws, which had been aggravated by Republican policies during the 1920s. President Hoover replied that the economy was fundamentally sound, but had been shaken by the repercussions of a worldwide depression whose causes could be traced back to the war. Behind this argument lay a clear implication: Hoover had to depend largely on natural processes of recovery, while Roosevelt was prepared to use the federal government's authority for bold experimental remedies.
