The four dengue viruses (DEN-1 through DEN-4) are immunologically related, but do not provide cross-protective immunity against each other. Occurrence Risk for Travelers International travelers are at risk for dengue infection, especially if an epidemic is in progress. Cases of dengue are confirmed every year in travelers returning to the United States following visits to tropical and subtropical areas. Travelers to endemic and epidemic areas, therefore, should be advised to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. The principal vector mosquito, Ae. aegypti

Hong Kong reports first-ever dengue fever case
The mosquito-borne infection is prevalent in areas near standing water Story Tools
HONG KONG, China Hong Kong has reported its first locally-contracted case of dengue fever, prompting authorities to step up efforts to control the mosquito-borne disease. A 21-year-old construction worker was stricken with dengue fever and hospitalized last week, and is currently in a stable condition, the territory's department of health said over the weekend. It did not give his name. The man was working on a construction site on Ma Wan island, off Hong Kong's New Territories and near Lantau Island, and had not traveled abroad during the disease's incubation period. Preliminary blood tests showed that two of his colleagues had the disease early in the month but had recovered. Other workers have been put under medical surveillance. The government has fumigated Ma Wan and urged any people working at or living near the building site and suffering from symptoms such as high fever, headaches, rashes, cramps and severe back and muscle pains to call hotlines they have set up.

It is transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes, most commonly Aedes aegypti, found in tropic and subtropic regions. This includes portions of Southeast Asia, the Indonesian archipelago into northeastern Australia, parts of sub-Saharan Africa, and parts of South and Central America. Dengue fever begins with sudden onset of a high fever, often to 104 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, headache, and slightly later the appearance of severe joint and muscle pains.

Indonesia battles dengue fever
From CNN Producer Kathy Quiano
Story Tools JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) Indonesia is battling an early outbreak of dengue fever with health officials reporting 189 deaths so far this year. The country has about 9,500 cases of the disease, which does not usually spread until later in the year. Fumigation has begun around the country to kill the mosquitoes that carry the disease, Dr. Umar Fahmi Achmadi, Director General for Contagious Disease Control and Environmental Sanitation, said. Achmadi has requested additional government funding to pay for the effort. Because of the early outbreak of the disease, Achmadi said tests are being run to determine if this is a new subtype. In 2003, the country had about 50,000 cases of the illness.

DENGUE FEVER
Background
Dengue fever is a viral disease which is transmitted between humans by the bite of infected mosquitos. It is the most significant mosquito borne disease in the world today with millions of cases occurring each year and the number of cases and their distribution is increasing each year. The illness is characterised by a sudden onset of fever, intense headache, joint and muscle pain, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea, and rash. During recovery, fatigue and depression may be experienced. The illness lasts between three to five days and is rarely fatal unless it progresses to dengue haemorrhagic fever.

Dengue Fever Risk for Travelers
Information for Travelers
Dengue is a viral illness spread by mosquitoes. The occurrence of dengue fever has been spreading rapidly over the past 20 years with millions of cases occurring each year. The risk of dengue is greatest in tropical countries of the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Southern China, Central and South America, the Caribbean (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), Mexico, and Africa. A continued increase in incidence is expected over the next few years. Dengue fever has a sudden onset with symptoms of high fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, nausea, vomiting, and rash. The symptoms may resemble those of influenza. The disease is usually not serious and is self-limited. The acute illness may last up to 10 days but complete recovery make take up to 4 weeks. A severe fatal form of the disease called dengue hemorrhagic fever can also occur especially in children under age 15. Dengue is usually spread by the Aedes mosquito which feeds in the daytime and is frequently found in cities. The is no person to person transmission. The risk of transmission to tourists appears to be small except when epidemics are occurring. Unfortunately, there is no vaccination available against dengue fever. Your best protection against dengue is to take mosquito precautions such as use of mosquito netting and to apply an insect repellent while outdoors. The most effective repellents are those which contain at least a 20-30% concentration of DEET.

(Yangon) A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Tropical Health Program , The University of Queensland. March 1994 ABSTRACT A prospective epidemiological study of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) was undertaken in two townships in Yangon between 1984 and 1988. The aim of the study was to determine - (a) whether the incidence of anamnestic dengue virus infection was higher among dengue shock syndrome (DSS) patients than in the general community, (b) whether DSS was commonly associated with infection with any particular dengue serotype and whether DSS was associated with infection with any particular sequence of dengue serotype. The epidemiological investigations were accompanied by assessment of changes in levels of selected blood proteins (ant-dengue IgG 1-4; complement proteins C3, C3a, C4 Factor B, factor H, factor I; C-reactive protein and tumor necrosis factor -à) in dengue patients with disease of varying severity during the course of their disease. Seroepidemiological surveys in the study areas enabled primary and anamnestic dengue transmission rates, as well as transmission patterns of individual dengue serotypes, to be calculated. Patients from the study areas that attended Yangon Children's Hospital were studied clinically, serologically and virologically to grade severity of disease, to identify primary and anamnestic dengue infections and to identify the virus serotypes associated with DSS.
