CFiB

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Cystic fibrosis affects the mucus and sweat glands of the body and is caused by a defective gene. Thick mucus is formed in the breathing passages of the lungs and this predisposes the person to chronic lung infections. Many pancreatic enzymes involved in the breakdown and absorption of fats in the intestine are absent, causing malabsorption (inadequate absorption of nutrients from the intestinal tract) and malnutrition. Most males with cystic fibrosis are infertile. About one in 2500 Caucasians is affected, and 2-5% of Caucasians carry the cystic fibrosis gene.
It is the most common fatal hereditary disorder affecting Caucasians in the United States. It is most common among Caucasians of Northern or Central European descent and is much less common in other ethnic groups. Risk factors include a family history of cystic fibrosis or unexplained infant death.

I remember, I remember and how sweet the memory
Of that precious, magic moment when first you smiled at me I remember, I remember the day you learned to walk,
And the sweet amazing things you said while learning how to talk. I remember, I remember that handsome little boy,
Pretending he was Superman, and playing with his toys. I remember, I remember the stories you would tell,
That made us laugh, You loved to laugh, and you made us laugh so well. I remember, I remember all the courage you always showed.
Even though the burden of C.F was such a heavy load.

Overview
Many researchers and support groups state that birth defects and genetic disorders, especially connective tissue disorders such as Marfan syndrome osteogenesis imperfecta and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome , can't possibly be cured through diet because they are inherited genetic disorders. This conclusion is invalid simply because many birth defects and inherited genetic disorders have been found to be improved, or even cured, through diet. The old school of thinking that a birth defect or inherited disorder had to be caused by a single gene is no longer widely held in medical circles. The breakthrough concept in research is that many birth defects and inherited disorders are influenced by both genes and environmental factors, especially nutrition. Genes may make people susceptible to certain defects and disorders, but they are often only a part of the picture. Some interesting examples and articles on the subject are listed below.

Cystic Fibrosis Gene Therapy Assays 1997-1999
At the MRC Human Genetics Unit Edinburgh. My research was involved with developing and utilising a variety of assays to study the efficacy of gene delivery and expression of our Gene Therapy reagents. We used quantitative PCR in situ hybridisation to study gene delivery to the lungs; and epitope tagged versions of CFTR to study protein synthesis and localisation. The aim is to have available an array of assays which enable a thorough analysis of the efficiency of gene therapy reagents in all experimental systems, including potential clinical trials.
