What is Cushing's syndrome?
This is a clinical disease caused by the excessive level of circulating cortisol hormone. What is cortisol? One of the steroid hormones produced from the adrenal glands. It is essential for the survival of a person. How is cortisol produced normally? The pituitary gland is a small pea size gland situated in a hollow bony pouch, at the base of the brain, at the back of the bridge of the nose. It is the master gland of the endocrine system and controls the functions of the other endocrine glands. The pituitary gland releases a hormone called ACTH which enters the blood circulation and passes to the adrenal glands making these glands release cortisol. The adrenal glands lie just above each of your two kidneys and when stimulated by ACTH release cortisol into the blood. What causes Cushing's syndrome? This can be caused by;

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Cushing's syndrome is named after the surgeon Harvey Cushing. It is a group of clinical signs and symptoms caused by a chronic excess of glucocorticoids, which are hormones produced by the adrenal glands. Glucocorticoids affect many body functions and are essential for survival, but when the level of these hormones is too high, it can cause serious problems. The most important glucocorticoid is the "stress hormone" cortisol. The pituitary gland, a small gland at the base of the brain, regulates cortisol production by secreting a hormone called adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).

About 15% of cases of Cushing's syndrome are due to ectopic Cushing's syndrome. Ectopic Cushing's syndrome is caused by tumors that secrete adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Other causes of Cushing's syndrome are oversecretion of ACTH by the pituitary gland, a tumor of the adrenal gland, or long-term administration of corticosteroid drugs commonly used to treat conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and asthma Small cell tumors of the lung, tumors of the thymus gland

    The Basics
    What is Cushing's Syndrome?

    Cushing's syndrome is an endocrine or hormonal disorder. It occurs when the adrenal glands release too much of the hormone cortisol into the body for long periods of time. Cortisol is essential to many of the body's cardiovascular and metabolic functions. But perhaps its most important job is to help the body respond to stress. Normally the adrenal gland releases the exact amount necessary to meet our daily needs. However, sometimes the process goes wrong and an excess of cortisol is produced. The malfunction may be caused by:
    • A pituitary tumor, which causes the pituitary gland (at the base of the brain) to stimulate the adrenal glands to secrete high levels of cortisol.

    A patient information handout on Cushing's syndrome and Cushing's disease, written by the authors of this article, is provided on page 1133. T he term "Cushing's syndrome" is used to describe a condition resulting from long-term exposure to excessive glucocorticoids. The syndrome is most commonly caused by the therapeutic administration of exogenous glucocorticoids. The term "Cushing's disease" is reserved for Cushing's syndrome that is caused by excessive secretion of adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) by a pituitary tumor, usually an adenoma. Cushing's disease is responsible for roughly two thirds of the cases of endogenous Cushing's syndrome. The remainder of the endogenous cases are caused by ectopic ACTH-secreting tumors and primary adrenal neoplasms.
