CUSHINGS SYNDROME What I have found: imbalances and energetic disturbances in the Pituitary-Adrenal Gland- Pancreas relationships on the physical and electromagnetic levels of the patient. PHYSICAL LEVEL MEDICAL DEFINITION:  Cushings Syndrome is an endocrine imbalance due to hyperadrenalcorticocism . This means it is caused by an abnormal increased secretion of hormones by the cortex of the Adrenal Gland. These hormones regulate water and electrolytes, blood sugar, sex hormones and natural cortisones. Generally the main defect is in the increased secretion of the glucocorticoid cortisol Hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex can be a result of abnormalities in the cortices, the pituitary or the hypothalamus of the brain. If one sided, the cause can be a tumor in the pituitary (adenomas or adenocarcinomas of the anterior lobe). Or it can be due to a defect in the negative feedback mechanism in the hypothalamus, whereby increasing levels of circulating cortisol (natural cortisone), does not result in physiologic inhibition of the

Getting the word out is very important to public understanding and this book can claim a small part in that. It was good to see one patient's perspective on Cushing's, but I would have preferred a more typical experience than this one, or those of several patients. Perhaps this book is best read by someone who doesn't have access to a computer, who can't find a support group. It would be better than nothing, easier to read than the medical textbooks I had to wade through during my diagnosis. I, too, had Cushing's, although I had the pituitary version, known as Cushing's Disease.

Equine Cushings Syndrome Full information on this condition in contained in both publications
What is Cushing's Syndrome? I n simple terms Cushing's is caused by a benign tumour of the Pituitary Gland. This results in an overproduction of a peptide called POMC. POMC stimulates the production of ACTH which in turn leads to the adrenal glands producing cortisol. Contrasting with a "normal horse", in the Cushing's animal, the pituitary gland does not curtail its production of ACTH when cortisol levels increase. Cortisol levels are consequently able to elevate , thus producing various symptoms:
  • Long curly coat (hirsutism) Failure to shed the winter coat/long summer coat Sudden Laminitis Lethargy Excessive urination Pot belly Drinking too much water

Cushings Syndrome is an over exposure to corticosteroids either by an over production on the part of the adrenal glands or when administered by a doctor. An abnormality of the pituitary gland can cause an over production of the hormone that triggers production of corticosteroids. The adrenal glands themselves may have developed a benign tumor (adenoma), this is relatively common ie half of all people over 70 years have them and it does cause the gland to excessively produce corticosteroids. The symptoms of Cushings Syndrome affects the distribution of fat so a person may develop a round moon face and a buffalo hump, in contrast hands and feet remain slim, muscles become weak, skin becomes thin and easily damaged and purple stretch marks develop over the abdomen. In time blood pressure is raised and bones develop osteoporosis as well the risk is raised in developing diabetes, kidney stones and mental disturbances.

[131I] 6-beta-iodomethyl-19-norcholesterol: NP-59
Pharmacology and Physiology
The precursor molecule from which all adrenocortical steroid hormones are synthesized is cholesterol [5]. NP-59 is a cholesterol analog which will localize to adrenal cortical lesions such as adrenal adenomas. It is most useful in the evaluation of incidentally detected adrenal masses and hyperaldosteronism. The examination is less useful in the evaluation of Cushings syndrome, which is most commonly due to bilateral adrenal hyperplasia. NP-59 is transported in the circulation like native cholesterol, bound to low-density lipoproteins. These will bind to specific low-density lipoprotein receptors on adrenocortical cells, and also within the liver. After binding to adrenocortical cells the NP-59 is internalized and esterified, but it is not further metabolized [1]. In the liver the agent is metabolically converted into bile salts (as with ordinary cholesterol) and excreted in the bile. The uptake of NP-59 is influenced by adrenocortical secretogogues such as adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and Angiotensin II which will increase uptake of the tracer [1]. Adrenal uptake of the agent is 50% dependent on ACTH and 10% dependent on angiotensin II. Dexamethasone and exogenous steroids will have the opposite effect, and reduce tracer uptake [1]. Uptake of the tracer is also inversely related to circulating levels of cholesterol, and its uptake may be severely reduced in patients with marked hypercholesterolemia due to competitive inhibition at the binding sites [1].

Men have decreased fertility with diminished or absent desire for sex. What Causes Cushing s syndrome? How Is Cushing s syndrome Diagnosed?
http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/endo/pubs/cushings/cushings.htm

Introduction
Cushing's syndrome is a hormonal disorder caused by prolonged exposure of the body's tissues to high levels of the hormone cortisol. Sometimes called "hypercortisolism," it is relatively rare and most commonly affects adults aged 20 to 50. An estimated 10 to 15 of every million people are affected each year.
What Are the Symptoms?
Symptoms vary, but most people have upper body obesity, rounded face, increased fat around the neck, and thinning arms and legs. Children tend to be obese with slowed growth rates. Other symptoms appear in the skin, which becomes fragile and thin. It bruises easily and heals poorly. Purplish pink stretch marks may appear on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, arms and breasts. The bones are weakened, and routine activities such as bending, lifting or rising from a chair may lead to backaches, rib and spinal column fractures. Most people have severe fatigue, weak muscles, high blood pressure and high blood sugar. Irritability, anxiety and depression are common.

Cushing's Syndrome Contents: Who gets it? What are it's symptoms? What causes Cushing's syndrome? How is it diagnosed? ... What about the future? Cushing's Syndrome Cushing's syndrome, also known as hypercortisolism, occurs when a person's tissues are exposed to an excess of the hormone cortisol. When the appropriate amount of cortisol is released by the adrenal glands, it helps regulate blood pressure, energy production, the ability to fight disease, and how the body maintains itself and responds to stress. But too much cortisol can alter the normal function of these processes, resulting in the symptoms of Cushing's syndrome. Who gets it? Cushing's syndrome is fairly rare. For every one million people, 2-5 new cases are diagnosed each year, with about 10 percent of these being children and teenagers. What are its symptoms? Most children and teenagers with Cushing's syndrome will show several of the following: - extreme weight gain - growth retardation - missed periods in teenage girls - excess hair growth - acne - reddish-blue streaks on the skin - high blood pressure - tiredness and weakness - either very early or late puberty Adults with the disease may also have symptoms of extreme weight gain, excess hair growth, high blood pressure, and skin problems. In addition, they may show:

Information on diagnosis and treatment of Cushing's syndrome.
http://www.pituitary.org/disorders/cushings.php
Cushing's Syndrome Cushing's syndrome is a debilitating endocrine disorder characterized by excessive cortisol levels in the blood which may be the result of a tumor of the pituitary gland, adrenal glands (located above the kidneys) or from tumors or cancer arising elsewhere in the body (ectopic ACTH producing tumors). Cushing's disease refers specifically to excessive ACTH secretion by a pituitary tumor (also called pituitary adenoma). The cause of Cushing's Syndrome is a pituitary adenoma in over 70% of adults and in approximately 60-70% of children and adolescents. Most pituitary ACTH-secreting adenomas are small in size (microadenomas). Overall, Cushing's Disease is relatively rare, affecting 10 to 15 of every million people each year, and most commonly affects adults aged 20 to 50 years. Women account for over 70% of cases. Symptoms and signs of Cushing's syndrome and disease may include:
  • Change in body habitus: weight gain in face (moon face), above the collar bone (supraclavicular) and on back of neck (buffalo hump) Skin changes with easy bruising, purplish stretch marks (stria) and red cheeks (plethora)
