A Patient's Guide to Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
Introduction
Cubital tunnel syndrome is a condition that affects the ulnar nerve where it crosses the inside edge of the elbow. The symptoms are very similar to the pain that comes from hitting your funny bone. When you hit your funny bone, you are actually hitting the ulnar nerve on the inside of the elbow. There, the nerve runs through a passage called the cubital tunnel. When this area becomes irritated from injury or pressure, it can lead to cubital tunnel syndrome. This guide will help you understand
  • what causes this condition ways to make the pain go away what you can do to prevent future problems
Anatomy
What is the cubital tunnel? The ulnar nerve actually starts at the side of the neck, where the individual nerve roots leave the spine. The nerve roots exit through small openings between the vertebrae. These openings are called foramen.

As recommended by Dr. Reimer Hoffmann, Oldenburg Plastic surgeon specializing in hand surgery
In cooperation with Dr. Hoffmann, from Oldenburg, KARL STORZ has developed a new instrument set for endoscopic, minimally invasive treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome and tarsal tunnel syndrome, which offers the following benefits:
  • Optimal visualization of the fine structures
    Far more extensive neurolysis
Faster improvement of the symptoms: More than 90% of patients reported an improvement in sensory and motor function only one day after the operation
Lower morbidity: The arm generally has good mobility just a day after the operation

If you are interested in this new instrument set, we will be pleased to send you further information.
For further information please contact our KARL STORZ Technical Consultant.

Castro Valley, CA A common problem among both acoustic and electric guitar players is the development of left forearm pain. This column will expand upon a specific type of injury, cubital tunnel syndrome, which affects mostly the inner side of the forearm and the pinky side of the hand. This syndrome is probably not familiar to most guitarists, so I'll discuss the typical pain patterns associated with it.

http://www.orthohealth.com/askthedoc/cubitaltunnel.html
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
The cubital tunnel is a space on the inside of the elbow where the ulnar nerve passes into the forearm. Cubital tunnel syndrome occurs when there is pressure on the ulnar nerve at the elbow, at the cubital tunnel or in the region above or below the elbow. If there is enough pressure on the nerve, pain may be felt in the elbow. The pain will sometimes run down the inside of the forearm into the small and ring fingers. There may also be numbness and tingling in the small and ring fingers. A feeling of clumsiness or weakness may be present in the hand. Causes
Anything that puts prolonged pressure on the ulnar nerve around the elbow may cause cubital tunnel syndrome. Sometimes, a fibrous band within the muscle above or below the elbow may compress the nerve. Activities that involve prolonged flexion of the elbow also will put pressure on the nerve, as will leaning on the inside of the elbow for prolonged periods of time. Swelling around the elbow joint because of another problem there may contribute to pressure on the ulnar nerve as a secondary problem. Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms usually include pain on the inside of the elbow, numbness and tingling in the small and ringfingers of the hand and weakness or clumsiness of the hand. Pain, numbness and tingling may be felt with activity or rest. Flexed elbow positions will tend to worsen the symptoms. In severe cases, the small muscles of the hand may atrophy, or lose strength.

Sci Tech Musicians, artists prone to cubital tunnel syndrome THE RIGORS encountered by performing artists are similar to those endured by professional athletes. They each undertake a vigorous regimen of training and conditioning, often eight to ten hours of practice daily. ``Musicians and other performing artists are exposed to tremendous amounts of stress in the upper extremities during practices and recitals,'' said Barry P. Simmons, professor of orthopaedic surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston, at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' Orthopaedic Update. In this arena of professional artists, demands of excellence, precision and endurance can be costly to the body of the artist, often leading to seriously debilitating conditions such as carpal tunnel or cubital tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel is caused by pressure exerted on the median nerve at the wrist and cubital tunnel is caused by repeated injury/pressure on the ulnar nerve at the elbow. The conditions and treatments discussed by Dr. Simmons are not limited to performing artists such as musicians, but may also occur in other artists, such as sculptors, painters who extensively use their hands and upper extremities.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome Cubital tunnel syndrome is a pinched nerve at the elbow commonly known as the "funny bone". This might be caused by trauma or repetitive use of the elbow and may be caused by continuous use of the elbow in a flexed position. This causes the nerve to become stretched and irritated as opposed to when the arm is extended and the nerve is in a relaxed position. The diagnosis can be confirmed with electrodiagnostic testing including nerve conduction velocity and the electromyogram. Nerve conduction velocity studies, the speed of the nerve across the elbow, will be slowed when there is nerve compression and electromyogram studies, the innervation of the muscles, might be affected by the pinched nerve. Hand Surgery Plastic surgeons were instrumental in the development of hand surgery beginning in the early 1900’s. Hand surgery is an important part of the Anderson-Mason Plastic Surgery practice. Common problems treated in our office include carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, tendon injuries, hand and finger fractures, trigger fingers, ganglions and other tumors, arthritis, fingertip injuries and other acute injuries. This page lists some of the most common problems of the hand along with a brief discussion of treatment options. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal tunnel syndrome results from pressure on the median nerve, one of the major nerves of the hand. A variety of symptoms can develop from carpal tunnel syndrome. Common symptoms include pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness of the thumb, index, middle and ring fingers. The median nerve travels down the arm and through the deep carpal tunnel in the wrist on it’s way to the hand. Any condition that causes swelling or inflammation within the carpal tunnel may lead to increased pressure on the median nerve. Carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms may then develop. Special nerve tests done by a neurologist help make the diagnosis.

There are as many forms of repetitive motion injuries as there are terms and definitions. The most common is carpal tunnel syndrome, or cts. What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? At the undersurface of the wrist and the base of the palm there is an enclosed region about two inches long called the carpal tunnel. This region contains nine flexor tendons that flex the fingers and the thumb each of which is surrounded by a sheath to allow easy gliding when moving. Whenever our fingers move there is activity within the carpal tunnel, and the flexor tendons travel back and forth within their sheaths. The median nerve sending messages to the hand also travels the length of the carpal tunnel. With repetitive hand and finger movement, the tendon sheaths become irritated and swollen, which either pinches or compresses the median nerve, or squeezes off its blood supply, causing carpal tunnel syndrome/cts. How Do You Know You Have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
