It causes inflammation of the intestines which can result in nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malabsorption of nutrients, and fistulas (holes in the intestines). It can occur in isolated parts or throughout the intestines. Crohn’s disease can vary from mild to life-threatening. It is typically treated with steroids which can have many unpleasant side effects. There has been much debate about the cause of Crohn’s disease; it is generally considered to be unknown by most of the medical community. Michael Greger, MD has done a great deal of research on Crohn’s revealing that many, if not most, cases may be caused by a species of bacteria that is both hard to detect and hard to kill with typical antibiotic therapy. The bacteria reside in some cows and are likely transferred to humans through both milk and meat. Unfortunately, some vegans have been diagnosed with Crohn’s. There may be several explanations for this: The bacteria have a long incubation period and these vegans may have been infected before becoming vegan.

If you do, any latest research information? Dear Reader, Crohn's disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. It is a chronic, inflammatory disease that may cause pain, fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, loss of weight, and numerous other complications. Most commonly, the terminal ileum, where th e end of the small intestine meets the large intestine, is inflamed. Ulcers may form on the intestinal walls that have become extremely thick from the prolonged inflammation. Crohn's disease can affect a person of any age, but is found most often in adolescents, young adults, and in people over 60. There is no known cause, although there is a slight tendency to inherit the disease. Approximately 20% of patients with Crohn's di sease have another family member affected by the disease. It may come from an abnormal reaction to either allergies or an infectious agent, like a virus. Long-term medical supervision is common because the severity of the disease varies and different treatments are administered. There is no cure for the disease, but with treatment, medical practitioners hope to suppress inflammation, permit healing of dama ged tissue, and relieve symptoms.

Evidence of a Genetic Component for IBD Genetic factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of the inflammatory bowel diseases, including both ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Evidence includes epidemiological data demonstrating differences in IBD incidence among different races and ethnic backgrounds, familial aggregation, and high concordance for IBD type in monozygotic vs dizygotic twins. Incidence rates for IBD are highest among whites, and among individuals of Jewish background compared with other ethnic groups. When a proband presents with IBD, the risk of a first-degree relative developing the disease is higher among Jewish vs non-Jewish populations. The familial risk is especially high among siblings, in whom age-adjusted cumulative incidence for Jewish compared with non-Jewish individuals are 16.8% vs 7.0%, respectively, for CD and 4.6% vs 0.9%, respectively, for UC; Within Jewish populations, Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jews have higher rates of IBD than Sephardic (Middle Eastern, African, or Spanish) Jews. Reports of familial clustering of IBD date back to the 1930s.

It is often associated with auto-immune disorders outside the bowel, such as mouth ulcers and rheumatoid arthritis . Given the high incidence of irritable bowel syndrome among Americans, this can also be a complicating factor. Crohn's patients typically suffer from chronic diarrhea and disrupted digestion , making it difficult for sufferers in the acute phase of the disease to eat and/or digest food. The inflammation can be extremely painful and debilitating.
