Crohn's disease symptoms
What is Crohns Disease and what are the symptoms? Crohn's disease is a disorder of the colon. It is similar to ulcerative colitis. Read on to learn more about Crohn's disease.
What is Crohn's disease? It is a disorder of the colon. It is one type of inflammatory bowel disease. Another you may have heard of is Ulcerative Colitis. The diseases feature chronic inflammation of the large or small intestine. Unfortunately, the cause of Crohn's disease is unknown. Crohn's causes swelling of the deeper layers of the lining of the intestine. Symptoms of Crohn's disease include: cramping, abdominal pain (often, but not always on the right lower side), diarrhea that may or may not contain blood, fever, weight loss. The disease usually starts in young adults with low grade fever and frequent diarrhea and cramping. Crohn's disease has been known to cause inflammation anywhere in the entire gastointestinal system, from the mouth to the anus. Because this is a chronic condition, meaning it is continual, scar tissue can build up in the intestines and even cause blockage and can also cause tears called fistulas, that will connect the bowels to another part of the body like the vagina, the bladder or the skin itself in the lining of the intestine. bodyOffer(21133) Besides the intestinal symptoms, Crohns can and often does, in more severe cases, cause other symptoms and affect other parts of the body. Crohn's can cause arthritis-like symtoms, with swelling and pain in the joints. It can also cause swellng and pain in the eyes, of the skin, in the liver, kidneys, or gallbladder.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease - Crohn's Disease
While there is still no known cause or cure, Crohn's is not considered a fatal disease, and in most cases patients lead full and productive lives, feeling quite well between flare-ups and responding well to the variety of treatments available.
Kidney stones may occur due to increased oxalate absorption in people who have had at least two feet of ileum (small intestine) removed. This can be controlled by limiting foods high in oxalate, such as instant coffee, tea, caffeinated beverages, spinach, beans, cocoa, beets and rhubarb, and by increasing calcium intake.
Cancer of the colon
Poor nutrient absorption can result when part of the small intestine (ileum) is diseased or removed. Malabsorption of fats occurs if more than 2-3 feet of the ileum are removed.
Also, disease extent and severity may vary widely from one individual to another, so what works for one person may not work for the next. Some individuals are managed on little or no medication, while some are afflicted with disease so severe or unremitting that even with high doses of medicines, complete remission is still unattainable. For these reasons, patient and physician need to work closely together to create the best treatment program for the individual patient. Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Anti-inflammatory drugs include various 5-ASA compounds such as sulfasalazine and corticosteroids such as prednisone. These cornerstones of IBD drug therapy work by preventing or reducing inflammation. In addition to reducing inflammation, 5-ASA compounds may prevent recurrence in some individuals.

Hi, my name's Dave. I'm thirty one and I was diagnosed with Crohns Disease in September 1990. I started this site to catalogue my battle with crohns and how I have overcome it.
Crohns disease can be a very dibilitating disease and in extreme cases it can be life threatening. Some people suffer severe symptoms which may culminate in major surgery. Other's are affected to a lesser degree. To every sufferer, what ever the severity, one fact remains; Crohns Disease changes your life, and very often that of your family, for ever.

In this program, Crohn's disease experts discuss promising new treatments in development and how these new treatments are targeting the disease more directly, having a positive impact on quality of life.
    Rick:
Hello and welcome to HealthTalk's Crohn's Education Network. Treatments for Crohn's can be very effective in easing the symptoms and pain of the disease, yet because there is no known cause for Crohn's disease, the current treatments and their side effects often "miss the mark" in helping patients to live comfortably during treatment.
[In this program], we will talk about promising new treatments that are in development. These new treatments are targeting the disease more directly, positively impacting a patient's quality of life, and could be an encouraging new option for patients.
This HealthTalk program is supported through an unrestricted educational grant from Elan Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Biogen, Inc. We'd like to thank them for their commitment to patient education.

    Crohn's Disease
What is it? Characterized by a chronic and long lasting ulceration of the section or sections of the digestive tract. The inflamed parts heal leaving scar tissue that narrows the passageway. This disorder is not contagious. Onset of Crohn’s Disease typically occurs between the ages of 14–30. Left untreated, it can become life threatening and it may increase the risk of cancer by as much as twenty times. What causes it? Crohn's disease is common in affluent societies due to the fiber deficient aspect of our diet. (Br Med J 1 (1973):274) Many cases of Crohn's Disease may be caused by a micro-organism known as MAP (Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis) present in cow's milk and NOT killed by pasteurization.

Medications. While there is no medical cure for IBD, several medications including sulfa drugs, corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents and antibiotics are used to reduce inflammation of the bowel tissue, permitting healing of the bowel and relief of symptoms. As inflammation subsides and symptoms resolve, a person with IBD may enter a period of remission that can last from weeks to years. Promising new drugs are often being evaluated in clinical trials conducted at certain medical centers.

    by Catherine O'Driscoll
Myth No. 1 Vaccines protect our dogs against disease, helping to ensure they live long, healthy, happy lives. Wrong! Vaccines only sometimes protect our dogs against disease (if at all). Scientific studies into human vaccines have shown that just as many vaccinated people, and sometimes more vaccinated people, contract diseases as do unvaccinated people. A study conducted by Canine Health Concern during 1997, involving 2,700 dogs, showed that 68.2% of dogs in the survey with parvovirus contracted it within three months of being vaccinated. Similarly, 55.6% of dogs with distemper contracted it within three months of vaccination; 63.6% contracted hepatitis within three months of vaccination; 50% contracted parainfluenza within three months of vaccination; and every single dog with leptospirosis contracted it within that three month timeframe. So vaccines represent - at best - only a 50/50 chance of protection. But if you doubt the validity of the CHC survey, ask around. It won't take long to find people whose dogs contracted these diseases shortly after being vaccinated. In a parvo vaccine trial conducted by Dr Ronald D Schultz, head of pathobiology at Wisconsin University, three out of six parvo vaccine brands totally failed to give protection; two gave only partial protection; and only one was shown to be effective.

The epidemiology and aetiology of UC and Crohn's disease (CD) share many features. From a pathological point of view, however, CD in contrast with UC is characterized by chronic inflammation extending through all the layers of the intestinal wall and involving the mesenteric as well as the regional lymph nodes. CD may exclusively affect the small bowel, which is the most common location, or it may involve the small bowel and the colon. In some patients the involvement is limited to the colon. In more rare instances other segments of the alimentary tract (stomach, duodenum and oesophagus) may be affected by CD but this usually occurs in association with involvement of the distal ileum. Early pathological features of CD include hyperaemia and oedema of the bowel mucosa and of the mesentery associated with enlarged inflammatory lymph nodes. Another early, typical gross pathological lesion of CD is a small superficial aphthous mucosal ulceration, commonly located over Peyer patches in the small intestine and over the lymphoid aggregates in the colon. Later during the course of the disease the ulcerations tend to enlarge and to coalesce. Typically, long linear longitudinal ulcerations develop along the long axis of the bowel (

On this page: The digestive system. Crohn's disease causes inflammation in the small intestine. Crohn's disease usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The inflammation can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Crohn's disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other intestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and to another type of IBD called ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. Crohn's disease affects men and women equally and seems to run in some families. About 20 percent of people with Crohn's disease have a blood relative with some form of IBD, most often a brother or sister and sometimes a parent or child.
