Home Costochondritis DESCRIPTION Costochondritis is an inflammation and associated tenderness of the cartilage (i.e., the costochondral joints) that attaches the front of the ribs to the breastbone. Costochondritis causes pain in the lower rib area or upper breastbone. Some patients fear they are having a heart attack. The most severe pain is usually between the breast and the upper abdomen. The pain may be greater when in sitting or reclining positions. Stress may aggravate this condition. Generally the third or fourth ribs are affected. However, any of the seven costochondral junctions may be affected, and more often than not more than one site is involved. The inflammation can involve cartilage areas on both sides of the sternum, but usually is on one side only. Most commonly the cause of costochondritis is classified as 'idiopathic,' or unknown. This means that there is no identifiable cause for the condition. This does not imply that idiopathic costochondritis is any less painful of a condition than if the cause can be identified. The most common known cause of costochondritis is traumatic injury. For example, a car accident where the driver's chest strikes the steering wheel can cause costochondritis by injuring the ribs and cartilage on the front of the chest. Viral infections, usually upper respiratory infections, have also been identified as a cause of costochondritis. The most frequently affected age group is young adults between 20 and 40 years old.

The first thing we need is a basic understanding of Costochondritis. I hope to give you an explanation as well as a personal glimpse into what it is like to have it. As I said on the index page I will not be giving credit here as that would be impossible. I have collected this information over time from various sources, source types, and from personal experience as well.
DEFINITION
Costochondritis is an insidious inflammation of the cartilage that attaches the ribs to the breastbone generally affecting the third or fourth ribs. It produces anterior chest wall pain associated with tenderness of the sternum and rib regions. Any of the seven costochondral junctions may be affected and more often than not, more than one site is affected.
ETIOLOGY
Costochondritis may be caused by trauma, as a result of a viral infection, or as part of an inflammatory disease process. Though, insidious in nature, repetitive minor trauma has been suggestive as the cause. But, generally the cause is unknown. Though I was 44 when I was diagnosed, it is usually diagnosed between the age of twenty and forty. It affects both sexes equally, but it is more prevalent in females.
SYMPTOMS
  • Qualities of the pain Sharp chest wall pain especially with pressure

"Severe Costochondritis (inflammation of tissue connecting ribs to breast bone; associated with Fibromyalgia. Used Infrasonic 8, for 10 minutes ( Body ), followed by 10 minutes ( Spirit ), twice a day. Within a month the pain was significantly decreased to the point where I discontinued getting local injections!!!
Because the local tenderness continues, I continue using the QGM with the goal of being pain free. It’s now much easier to put clothing on, but the most significant improvement is the peace of mind associated with not having to get regular pain injections in a very tender area."

COSTOCHONDRITIS
GENERAL INFORMATION: What is it? Costochondritis (kah-sto-kon-dri-tis) is when the tissue that connects your ribs to your breastbone becomes irritated. It is more common in young adults. It may take 3 to 6 weeks to get better. But, it can come back. Causes: Often the cause of costochondritis is not known. Signs and Symptoms: You may feel sharp pain in your chest and it may hurt when you breathe. The pain is worse when you move or breathe deeply and may be in more than one place. Care: No special care is needed. But, you DO need to be checked by your caregiver to make sure that your symptoms are not caused by something more serious. You may need to take over-the-counter medicine for pain. CARE AGREEMENT: Discuss your treatment options with your caregiver. You can work with him/her to decide which medicine and care will be used to treat your problem. You always have the right to refuse treatment.

The type of shortness of breath you describe could be due to pain, anxiety, an abnormal heart rhythm or a lung disease, such as asthma. The pain of costochondritis is notoriously unpredictable. A bone scan is not a good test to establish the diagnosis. If the chest pain is also associated with tenderness of the sternum and/or the rib attachments, then the diagnosis of costochondritis is likely to be correct.
With a "strong family history of heart disease" your concern about the interatrial septum motion abnormality is warranted. You should definitely see both the cardiologist and the rheumatologist. Costochondritis
Costochondritis is an inflammation of a rib or the cartilage connecting a rib. This is a common cause of chest-wall pain. Inflammation or injury involving the chest muscles is another common cause of chest-wall pain.
Symptoms of Costochondritis
The problem is marked by chest tightness and sharp pain that worsens when you move or breathe deeply. The pain may spread to the arm and may occur in more than one place. In the beginning the pain is usually worse and it hurts to breathe, wear a bra or move suddenly. Eventually the pain subsides to a dull, constant ache or tenderness in the ribs. The cause of this condition is usually unknown but it can be the result of trauma to the rib cage, a viral infection or part of an inflammatory disease. The symptoms usually disappear spontaneously within eight weeks but sometimes it takes up to a year and in some individuals it remains a chronic condition. When it is a chronic condition the pain seems to wax and wane and any sudden movement or lifting of heavy objects could make the condition worse.

Post Followup Ask the Doctor Posted by Jestduckie on January 19, 1999 at 22:53:55: Could you explain to me why costochondritis would cause me to have charley horse type of cramps on either side of my chest? I have had these cramps not at the same time but on both sides of my chest. These are scary to me. I am wondering if they can affect the heart since the heart is a muscle? When I am sleeping they wake me up and at times so bad that it like takes my lung along with it and makes it so I can't breathe normally without EXTREME pain until the cramp goes away? Thank you.

Post Followup Ask the Doctor Posted by lupusDoc on January 25, 1999 at 23:05:47: In Reply to: Costochondritis posted by Jestduckie on January 19, 1999 at 22:53:55: Hello Jestduckie, We asked the doctor your questions, and this was his reply: Since I haven't examined you, and am not your doctor, what I have to say is only *guess-work* - please keep that in mind. Costochondritis is inflammation in the costal cartilage. Anytime there are an area of pain in the body, the surrounding areas tend to *guard* against movement of that area. In your case, your intercostal muscles may be spending the day tensed up, to keep movement at a minimum in your chest. Very often when muscles are used in a way that is not natural, they react by having spasms. This may be what's occuring. Your intercostal muscles and your heart, are two different types of muscle. What affects one does not have to (and often doesn't) affect the other. So if your spasms are from overuse, your heart will not be affected at all. You need to have this all checked out by your doctor. If it is as I described, then there are treatments and therapy that can help relax those muscles, so that they don't spasm. Keep in mind though, that there are other possible reasons for the spasms, which is why your doctor needs to examine you.
