The condition causes localized chest pain that you can reproduce by pushing on the cartilage in the front of your ribcage. Costochondritis is a relatively harmless condition and usually goes away without treatment. The cause is usually unknown.
  • Costochondritis (with unknown cause) is a common cause of chest pain in children and adolescents. It accounts for 10-30% of all chest pain in children. Annually, doctors evaluate about 650,000 cases of chest pain in young people aged 10-21 years. The peak age for the condition is 12-14 years.

Definition
Costochondritis is an inflammation and associated tenderness of the cartilage (i.e., the costochondral joints) that attaches the front of the ribs to the breastbone. Description Costochondritis causes pain in the lower rib area or upper breastbone. Some patients fear they are having a heart attack . The most severe pain is usually between the breast and the upper abdomen. The pain may be greater when in sitting or reclining positions. Stress may aggravate this condition. Generally the third or fourth ribs are affected. However, any of the seven costochondral junctions may be affected, and more often than not more than one site is involved. The inflammation can involve cartilage areas on both sides of the sternum, but usually is on one side only. Costochondritis should be distinguished from Tietze Syndrome, which is an inflammation involving the same area of the chest, but also includes swelling. Causes and symptoms The causes of costochondritis are not well-understood and may be difficult to establish. The most likely causes include injury, repetitive minor trauma, and unusual excessive physical activity.

Costochondritis
Costochondritis is a frequent cause of anterior chest pain. It is important to rule out cardiac disease as a source of the pain. The pathogenesis of costochondritis is unknown. The 2 nd to 5 th costal cartilages are most frequently affected. Palpation of the affected areas cause localized pain as well as widely referred pain. The condition occurs most frequently in women. Treatment involves the use of NSAIDS and application of heat. If pain is resistant to these therapies injection of the costochondral joint with local anesthetic and steroid might be of benefit.

What is costochondritis?
Costochondritis is inflammation of the joint between a rib and the breastbone (sternum) or between the bony part of the rib and the rib cartilage. (Cartilage is a tough rubbery tissue that lines and cushions the surfaces of joints.) It is more common in women than men and tends to occur more often in people over 40 years old.

  • What is the origin of the term, costochondritis? WHAT IS IT? Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that attaches the inner end of the upper ribs to the flat bone in the middle of the chest (known as the sternum). Cartilage is a type of tissue that helps form many important body structures. For example, the ears are mostly made of cartilage. WHAT ARE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF COSTOCHONDRITIS? The symptoms of costochondritis usually begin slowly over time. The initial symptom of costochondritis can feel like a heart attack, causing may sufferers to go to the emergency room. In fact, about 30% of people that go to the hospital with chest pain have costochondritis. Sharp chest pain, irritation, and chest tightness usually occurs in costochondritis. The chest pain may radiate outwards from one side of the chest to the other and to the arms and neck. It can also radiate to the back and stomach. The pain is more common on the left side of the body. It is possible to feel pain in more than one body part at the same time in costochondritis. In the beginning of costochondritis, the pain is usually worse. Eventually, the chest pain usually becomes a dull, constant ache. A sharp pain is often felt in the ribs, which are often sensitive when touched. The pain is usually anywhere from the 4th through the 6th ribs, but can occur in any of the first 7 ribs. Ask the Doctor
Q: Costochondritis I was recently diagnosed with costochondritis. What is it exactly and how should I treat it? My doctor has said that I can continue with vigorous exercise as normal - is this really sensible with a fractured sternum? Rebecca Dr Trisha Macnair responds The prefix costo- simply means something which is to do with the ribs, the prefix chondr- means related to the cartilage and -itis means inflammation. So if you put all these together you get costochondritis which means inflammation of the cartilage of the ribs. In particular costochondritis affects the cartilage which joins the ribs to the breastbone. Mechanical problems or trauma usually cause it There are a variety of possible causes. Most common is trauma such as damage to the sternum. You mention a fractured sternum so I guess that in your case whatever broke your sternum also lead to inflammation in the tissues which surround it. Other causes include:
    • Mechanical pressure or stress on the sternum
    • Viral infections which cause inflammation of cartilage
Symptoms may be mistaken for heart disease Costochondritis causes tenderness over the breastplate and pain if you put pressure on the ribs in this area. The pain is made worse by anything which moves the ribs and pulls on the cartilage which connects them to the sternum.
