Medical Encyclopedia Encyclopedia Disease C -> Cor pulmonale Cor pulmonale Causes and Risks: Prevention: Avoiding behaviors that lead to chronic lung disease (especially cigarette smoking) may prevent the eventual development of cor pulmonale. Careful evaluation of childhood heart murmurs may prevent cor pulmonale due to certain heart defects. Symptoms:
  • Shortness or breath
  • Symptoms of the disease that causes low oxygen (wheezing, coughing)
  • Swelling of the feet or ankles
Signs and Tests:
  • Bluish color to the skin (cyanosis)
  • Distension of the neck veins
  • Abnormal fluid collection in the abdomen, enlargement of the liver
  • Abnormal heart sounds
  • Abnormal electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Echocardiogram
  • Chest x-ray
  • CAT scan of the chest
  • Pulmonary function tests
Treatment: Treatment is often directed at the underlying illness. Supplemental oxygen may be prescribed to increase the level of oxygen in the blood. A diet low in salt is often prescribed. Diuretics may be given to remove excess fluid from the body. Calcium channel blockers or intravenous prostacyclin may be used in primary pulmonary hypertension. Surgery may be used to reverse heart defects that cause cor pulmonale.

Cor pulmonale

Respiratory system
Definition: Failure of the right side of the heart caused by prolonged high blood pressure in the pulmonary artery and right ventricle of the heart. Alternative Names: Right-sided heart failure - cor pulmonale Causes And Risk: Normally, the left side of the heart produces a higher level of blood pressure in order to pump blood to the body; the right side pumps blood through the lungs under much lower pressure. Any condition that leads to prolonged high blood pressure in the arteries or veins of the lungs (called pulmonary hypertension ) will be poorly tolerated by the right ventricle of the heart. When this right ventricle fails or is unable to properly pump against these abnormally high pressures, this is called cor pulmonale. Almost any chronic lung disease or condition causing prolonged low blood oxygen can lead to cor pulmonale. A few of these causes include:

In 1985 the Ontario legislature established the Industrial Disease Standards Panel (IDSP) to investigate and identify diseases related to work. The Panel is independent of both the Ministry of Labour and the Workers' Compensation Board. At the end of each fiscal year the WCB reimburses the Ministry for the Panel's expenditures. The Panel's authority flows from section 95 of the Workers' Compensation Act and its functions are set out as follows: (8) (a) to investigate possible industrial diseases; to make findings as to whether a probable connection exists between a disease and an industrial process, trade or occupation in Ontario; to create, develop and revise criteria for the evaluation of claims respecting industrial diseases; and to advise on eligibility rules regarding compensation for claims. Decisions of the Panel are made by its members who represent labour, management, scientific, medical and community interests. Once the Panel makes a

When the Workers' Compensation Act was amended in 1985, the Occupational Disease Panel was created. The Panel was set-up to provide the Workers' Compensation Board with scientific and policy advice about the recognition and compensation of work-related diseases. The need for the Panel was identified by several individuals, including Professor Weiler, who studied the workers' compensation system and identified systemic under-compensation of disease claims. The Panel is a decision-making body that is composed of representatives of the public and the scientific community and technical and professional persons. It has a small staff and is assisted by consultations with renowned experts in the areas of medicine and science. The statute specifically sets out the following mandate ( Workers' Compensation Act , R.S.O. 1990, c. W. 11, s.95):
