    BIRTH CONTROL Emergency Contraception: The Morning-After Pill What is it? Emergency contraception (also known as the morning-after pill) is a high dosage of the birth control pill. It is recommended to be used after sexual intercourse, over a period of 72 hours, to achieve the goal of preventing or ending pregnancy. There are three different ways birth control pills are currently being promoted for this use: progesterone alone, estrogen alone, or both of these artificial steroids together. These are the same steroids found in the typical birth control pill. Where did this idea come from? How do emergency contraception/morning-after pills work? The emergency contraceptive/morning-after pill has three possible ways in which it can work:
  • Ovulation is inhibited, meaning the egg will not be released;
  • The normal menstrual cycle is altered, delaying ovulation; or
  • It can irritate the lining of the uterus so that if the first and second actions fail, and the woman does become pregnant, the tiny baby boy or girl will die before he or she can actually attach to the lining of the uterus. In other words, if the third action occurs, her body rejects the tiny baby and he or she will die. This is called a chemical abortion.

Riddle emphasizes the medical techniques (potions, herbs, spells, incantations, surgical techniques) which were used for contraception and the demographical evidence for the use of contraception while McLaren emphasizes the legal and cultural aspects of contraception.

  • "Adoption was common in the ancient world, but those adopted were usually adults; the purpose was not to provide for the poor, but rather to obtain a suitable claimant to protect the family's property. As one's own children were often a disappointment adoption was, asserted the over-rational Democritus (c. 400 BC), the most reasonable way in which to assure oneself of worthy inheritors." p. 16-17
  • Regarding fertility control in ancient Greece: "Most of these contraceptive practices referred to stratagems employed by women; this was clearly "female knowledge" of which male writers were often simply the chronicles. . . .

    What is Sex? Contraception In an emergency: contraception after sex ... Feedback
    Contraception
    When the time is right for you, you may think about having a baby. It may happen when you're 18, 28, or even 38. Your baby will bring unimaginable joys to your life, and much else too, like sleepless nights, screaming and dirty diapers! Pregnancy should happen when you are ready. For now, it is important to avoid an unplanned pregnancy and so you need to use contraception, and you need to use it all the time until you make a conscious decision to have a baby. Sex is such an amazing experience, that the last thing you want in the back of your head is, "oh God, what will I do if we get pregnant." That's right… "we," because using contraception is a shared responsibility between a couple, and looking at the stats, it seems like more people need to think about contraception. In 1998, the Canadian Contraception Study found that only 60% of 15-17 year-olds always used a method of contraception. Scary…but it only takes one "oops" to get pregnant. So, make sure you find a contraception method that works best for you and your partner.
