Contraception and Abortion in the Ancient Classical World In today's society we hear much about the prevention of unwanted teen pregnancies, protection oneself against sexually transmitted diseases, and the education of youths concerning birth control and abstinence. Condoms and birth control pills have been proven highly effective and easily accessible, but there were no such things in the ancient world. How then did the ancient Romans cope with similar issues? What sexual concerns faced the Roman world and how did the Romans effectively control their number of offspring? Despite the concerns arising from a declining population, ancient civilizations desired effective means to limit conception and birth. What do we know about how they achieved such desired results, and what effect did their methods have on the female (or possibly male) body? Asked in 1994 to give a talk on heart disease for women, his preparatory research unexpectedly led to a foundational insight about women's health.
