Emergency Contraception
What is Emergency Contraception? Pregnancy can be prevented after intercourse by taking Emergency Contraceptive pills (EC). EC is commonly known as the "Morning After" Pill. It works by giving the body a short, high, burst of synthetic hormones. This disrupts hormone patterns needed for pregnancy. EC disturbs the ovaries and the development of the uterine lining, making pregnancy less likely. EC is used within 120 hours (5 days) after intercourse. It is most effective within the first 24-48 hours. Emergency Contraception reduces the risk of pregnancy by 75%. EC does not protect against reproductive tract infections, including HIV/AIDS. Use Cautions Side Effects Danger Signs ... PDF Version Use EC consists of two doses, the second one is taken 12 hours after the first. The sooner the first dose is taken after unprotected intercourse the more likely it is to be effective. Plan B is one brand of EC. It has two progesterone pills. Birth control pills that have both estrogen and progesterone can also be used for EC. Choose only one type of pill to take for EC. The chart below contains the dosage information for some common brands of birth control pills. Some birth control packages have several different colors. It is important to take the exact color on this chart. Brands not listed have not been tested for their effectiveness.

Levonorgestrel Emergency Contraception Active Ingredients: Levonorgestrel Emergency Contraception Representative Names: Plan B Who is this for? Levonorgestrel is a female hormone that is used in oral contraceptives (birth-control pills). The drug prevents ovulation (or the release of eggs from your ovaries) and fertilization, thus preventing pregnancy. It is not effective in terminating an existing pregnancy. Levonorgestrel tablets allow you to prevent pregnancy following unprotected intercourse, or following a known or suspected contraceptive failure. The drug is for emergency use and should not be used in place of regular contraception since it is not as effective as regular contraceptives. When should I be careful taking it?

T The use of safe, effective emergency postcoital contraceptive methods could result in 1 million fewer abortions and 2 million fewer unintended pregnancies each year in the United States. Although 2 to 3 percent of women terminate a pregnancy each year through abortion, only 1 percent of women in America report ever having used emergency contraception. Studies of college women who have had abortions reveal that, on average, only one in three was aware that emergency contraception was available. Worldwide, emergency contraception has been used extensively for over two decades. The options currently available include an estrogen-progestin combination (ethinyl estradiol with levonorgestrel), progestin alone (levonorgestrel), the antiprogestin synthetic steroid RU 486 (mifepristone; Mifeprex), estrogen alone (high-dose ethinyl estradiol) and the copper intrauterine device (IUD) (Table 1) TABLE 1

76. Contraception: A Symposium
respond to Pope Paul IV s encyclical, Humanae Vitae, in which the Pope spoke out for monogamous sexual relations and no artificial means of contraception.

Contraception: A Symposium
This year is the thirtieth anniversary of the encyclical of Paul VI, Humanae Vitae , routinely described in both the general and religious press as "controversial." We asked Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish thinkers to respond to one or more of the following questions:
  • Do you judge the argument of Humanae Vitae convincing with respect to contraception? How do you think the argument could have been made more convincingly? In view of developments in the last thirty years, was Paul VI right about the moral and social consequences of contraception? If you agree that the message of the encyclical has not been effectively communicated, why is that the case?
—The Editors Panelists
Harold O. J. Brown
Thirty years ago Pope Paul VI issued the encyclical Humanae Vitae ("Of Human Life"). It came as a chilling blast to liberal Catholics and others-the population control establishment, for example-who hoped for a major change in the Church's stand on artificial contraception. With the Second Vatican Council still a very recent memory and aggiornamento still in the air, many Roman Catholics as well as others expected the Pope to "bring the Church up to date" and validate at least some forms of artificial birth control, which many Catholics were already practicing.
