TREND TOWARD ABSTINENCE-ONLY SEX ED MEANS MANY U.S. TEENAGERS ARE NOT GETTING VITAL MESSAGES ABOUT CONTRACEPTION
Sex Ed Teachers Believe They Are Not Meeting Students' Needs for Reproductive Health Information-One in Four Are Told Not to Teach About Contraception

Public school sexuality education teachers report that the focus on abstinence-only instruction increased markedly during the 1990s: In 1999, 23% of these teachers taught abstinence as the only way of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), compared with 2% in 1988, according to a new study by The Alan Guttmacher Institute. While some topics-HIV and other STDs, abstinence, correct condom use and how to resist peer pressure to have intercourse-are being taught earlier than they were a decade ago, most are still taught less often and in later grades than teachers think they should be. Moreover, instruction in all grades is much less likely to cover birth control, abortion, how to obtain contraceptive and STD services, and sexual orientation than it was in the late 1980s. "Teachers on the front line in high schools around the country recognize that young people need a range of information to support them in making responsible decisions regarding their sexuality," comments AGI President Sara Seims. "Yet this study reveals that teachers are covering far less, far later than they believe is needed. Our findings are particularly disheartening, considering that abstinence accounted for about one-quarter of the recent drop in the U.S. teenage pregnancy rate, while improved contraceptive use was responsible for the rest. And the teenage pregnancy rate and adolescent rates of STDs remain high. Abstinence messages are very important, but clearly the coverage of contraceptive topics is also crucial in helping our youth prevent unplanned pregnancy and STDs."

EC Basics
More than 70 medical organizations support EC's purchase over-the-counter. While exceedingly safe and effective if taken within 5 days, EC is most effective (95%) if taken within 24 hours after after unprotected sexual intercourse - when a condom breaks, birth control is forgotten, or after a sexual assault. EC has the potential to prevent half of the unintended pregnancies and 800,000 of the abortions taking place each year in the US. 5/7/04 - Breaking News!
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) late yesterday decided to reject over-the-counter status for emergency contraception. We must now make our voices heard, once again It is imperative that we send thousands of messages to the FDA expressing our outrage that it has succumbed to political pressure and rejected approval for Plan B over the counter. ACT NOW! The Washington Post reported just tuesday (5/4/04) the alarming news that the distributors of the emergency contraceptive (EC) Plan B did not think that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would approve over-the-counter status for EC. A spokesperson for Barr Laboratories, the distributors of Plan B, told the

Contraception and Chastity G. E. M. ANSCOMBE [Gertrude Elizabeth Margaret Anscombe] From The Human World , No. 7 (1972), pp. 9-30. I will first ask you to contemplate a familiar point: the fantastic change that has come about in people's situation in respect of having children because of the invention of efficient contraceptives. You see, what can't be otherwise we accept; and so we accept death and its unhappiness. But possibility destroys mere acceptance. And so it is with the possibility of having intercourse and preventing conception. This power is now placed in a woman's hands; she needn't have children when she doesn't want to and she can still have her man! This can make the former state of things look intolerable, so that one wonders why they were so pleased about weddings in former times and why the wedding day was supposed to be such a fine day for the bride. Christianity was at odds with the heathen world, not only about fornication, infanticide and idolatry; but also about marriage. Christians were taught that husband and wife had equal rights in one another's bodies; a wife is wronged by her husband's adultery as well as a husband by his wife's. And Christianity involved non-acceptance of the contemptible role of the female partner in fornication, calling the prostitute to repentance and repudiating respectable concubinage. And finally for Christians divorce was excluded. These differences

By SUSAN McCARTHY Photographs by Janssen-Ortho/Toronto, Canada T he world contains many museums of erotica (the largest is in Amsterdam), but just one Museum of Contraception. I was alerted to its existence by a paragraph in "Where TORONTO," a freebie magazine I found in a hotel room last May; the notice seemingly attracted no one but me. Skipping the Sky Dome, the CN Tower, and museums of ceramics, sugar, and shoes, I made an appointment to view the museum, located at the Janssen-Ortho Pharmaceutical Company, manufacturer of contraceptive products. I was the only visitor that day, alone and captivated. Although the museum consists of fewer than a dozen display cases in a quiet hallway, the cases are full of unusual, impressive objects and labels with sonorous language, all testifying to the utter human determination to unlink sex from its most obvious end. I took out my notebook and wrote "Occlusator Anticoncipiens et Prophylacticum." "Barbasco dioscorea composita." "Sanitary G.U. Bag." There were actual exhibits of contraceptive methods outlined in the Ebers Papyrus (1550 BCE), by Al-Razi (860-930) and Avicenna (980-1037). Acacia. Crocodile dung. Queen Anne's Lace.

pam.long@ny.ddb.com Survey Finds Pharmacists, Public Favor Widespread Access to Emergency Contraception, Oppose Restrictive Conscience Clause Legislation January 14, 2000 Washington, D.C. A recent survey conducted on behalf of the Reproductive Health Technologies Project by Peter D. Hart Research Associates, Inc. in New Jersey and Oregon found favorable attitudes toward widespread access to emergency contraception (EC) among voters and pharmacists. Emergency contraception works to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex, and is available by prescription in the United States. The survey of 506 voters and 103 pharmacists in New Jersey and 503 voters and 105 pharmacists in Oregon found that approximately six in ten voters (62% NJ, 64% OR), and the same proportion of pharmacists (63% NJ, 69% OR) favor emergency contraception being broadly accessible to all women. The survey also examined participants’ reactions to so-called “conscience clauses,” legislation that grants individual pharmacists the right to refuse to dispense medications – including EC – which conflict with their moral or religious beliefs. “This study echoes what we in the reproductive health field have known for years,” said Nancy Yanofsky, President, ProChoice Resource Center.
