Constipation is a very common complaint among older persons. It is defined as defecation less than three times a week or straining on defecation at least a quarter of the time. Though many consider defecation every day as a sign of good health, this is not necessarily the case. Constipation can be classified into two types: functional and rectosigmoid outlet delay.
The prevalence of constipation is not known. However, in the U.S., a distinct geographic distribution exists that may suggest three global environmental factors: rural living, colder temperature and low socio-economic status.
Risk factors include:
  • Older age
  • African-American
  • Female
  • Poor socio-economic status
  • Less exercise
  • Less education
  • Low calorie intake.

How do I Prevent Constipation? Constipation can mean different things to different people. It can mean the difficult or infrequent passage of stools or can refer to the hardness of stools. Some people feel “constipated “ if they do not pass a stool daily, while others may go two to three days before feeling constipated. It is first important to note that it is not necessary for every person to move his or her bowels every day. A regular bowel routine is individual from person to person. Some people may move their bowels more than once a day, while others may move their bowels every other day. Both instances are perfectly normal. To determine what your normal bowel routine is, think back to a time before you noticed a problem, and make that your goal to return to a similar schedule. A person should move their bowels at least once every 3 days. Constipation can be caused by many factors.

    Definition
Difficult defecation; infrequent defecation with passage of unduly hard and dry fecal material; sluggish action of the bowels. It is virtually impossible to state how frequently the bowels should move in order to be classed as "normal". The range of variation in healthy individuals can vary from 2 to 3 bowel movements per day to 2 per week.

    Causes
Predisposing: no regular bowel movements from childhood; worry, anxiety, fear, sedentary life. Direct: failure to establish definite and regular times for bowel movements; improper diet; intestinal obstruction; tumors; excessive use of laxatives; weakness of intestinal musculature (atony) or excessive tonicity (spasticity); use of certain drugs; presence of anal lesions. It is a concomitant in some types of insanity. Sometimes something as simple as not drinking enough fluids may cause constipation.

constipation. constipation is defined in two ways. constipation is nota disease in itself, but is the symptom of an underlying problem.
http://www.cathayherbal.com/library/general_Information/Constipation/constipatio
CONSTIPATION Constipation is defined in two ways. There is longer than 48 hours between bowel movements, or there may be difficult bowel movements with hard, dry stools. Constipation is not a disease in itself, but is the symptom of an underlying problem. It may be due to inapropriate diet, a lack of regular bowel habits, general weakness, sedentary lifestyle, stress, and over-reliance on laxatives. A sudden or recent change in the frequency of bowel movements may be a sign of a more serious disease such as cancer. Although there is a very wide variation in what may be considered healthy and normal, most traditional systems of healing stress that the bowels should move daily in order to rid the body of waste products and prevent their reabsorption. Prolonged constipation can have serious consequences on the general health such as headaches, poor sleep, low energy, hemorrhoids, acne and other skin conditions, appendicitis, and diverticulitis. It also predisposes to the development of bowel cancer and aggravates other diseases such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Traditional Chinese Perspective
According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), constipation occurs as a result of the interaction between a person's lifestyle, diet and habits on the one hand, and their basic body constitution on the other. We are all born with certain tendencies towards imbalance and these will influence the types of diseases that we develop. These different strengths and weaknesses form the basic constitution, which is the background upon which the day to day changes in our health and well-being are superimposed.

Constipation can be defined as the passage of small hard faeces infrequently and with difficulty. Constipation is more common in patients with advanced cancer than in those with other terminal diseases, and many of the associated symptoms may mimic features of the underlying disease. About half of patients admitted to specialist palliative care units report constipation, but about 80% of patients will require laxatives.

Constipation Eating foods high in dietary fiber, particularly insoluble fiber , is an effective way to manage constipation. Dietary fiber attracts water, creating soft, bulky stools that stimulate bowel contractions and ease elimination. Fiber provides a good foundation for bacteria to grow on, which is important as sufficient bacterial action results in a larger stool volume and better bowel function. Dietary fiber is classified as insoluble or soluble and both types have notable effects in the body. Insoluble fiber is broken down slowly, if at all, by intestinal bacteria and promotes laxation. Soluble fiber is broken down (fermented) by intestinal bacteria and has little effect on regularity. Two noteworthy soluble fiber exceptions are oats and psyllium seed husks. Both promote regularity and are useful in relieving constipation. Because they are high in dietary fiber, ground flaxseeds can help ease the passage of stools and thus relieve constipation. The recommended dietary fiber intake for adults falls in the range of 20-35g per day, though the average American consumes far less, only 12-15g each day. Dried fruit, and fresh fruits and vegetables particularly

CONSTIPATION AND HOW TO GET RID OF IT
Constipation is one ailment that you need never have again. It is certainly important to put the right kind of food into your body, but it is also essential to get wastes out. Naturopaths
frequently address illness, bowel first, and with good reason. Scientific studies have shown increased incidence of diverticular diseases, heart diseases, and cancer among constipated persons. It is common for arthritics to have a history of chronic constipation. Probably at least one third of all diabetics would require less insulin simply if they had more fiber in their diet.
Throughout much of Africa and Asia, people eat a great deal of vegetables, grains and legumes (beans, lentils, etc.). These people have a digestive transit time of 18 hours or less. This means that what's left of the food they just ate will be excreted as a bowel movement about 18 hours later. In Westernized cultures, a transit time twice as long (36 hours) is the rule, and 48 to 72 hours is not uncommon. This means the wastes stay in the body much longer, allowing greater opportunity for those toxins to be reabsorbed.
Your colon (or bowel) is designed to collect and hold wastes, but only for a while. If the colon is not emptied regularly, it begins to resemble a backed-up sewer. Fecal matter packed into the bowel can stretch it out of shape, which reduces muscle tone, and poor elimination is the result. Wastes then become more and more compacted and concentrated, and harder still to eliminate. Stools become foul smelling as normally beneficial colon bacteria give way to a polluted, pathogenic bowel.

Constipation is a problem for people of all ages. Although you may not think it so, it is more common in females than in males. Pregnancy is frequently attributed as a cause of chronic constipation. So, as with any women's health care issue, constipation should not be go untreated. It is a mistake to assume that constipation only strikes the elderly. Although more likely to occur later in life, constipation is easily triggered by diet. Depending on your body chemistry, excessive intake of certain kinds of foods may leave you unable to have regular bowel movements. There is no reason to live with uncomfortable chronic constipation. Treatment of a mild condition may be achieved with nutritional adjustment. Friendlier dietary choices that will react more gently with your particular digestive system are a good choice. If further relief is desired, consider seeking medicinal action.

    Constipation
Definition: Constipation refers to infrequent or hard stools, or difficulty passing stools. More specifically, constipation may involve pain during the passage of a bowel movement, the inability to pass a bowel movement after straining or pushing for more than 10 minutes, or no bowel movements after more than 3 days.
Alternative Names: Irregularity of bowels; Lack of regular bowel movements
Considerations: Constipation is a relative term. Normal patterns of bowel elimination vary widely from person to person and you may not have a bowel movement every day. While some healthy people may have consistently soft or near-runny stools, others may have consistently firm stools, but no difficulty in passing them. When the stool is hard, infrequent, and requires significant effort to pass, you have constipation. The passage of large, wide stools may tear the mucosal membrane of the anus, especially in children. This can cause bleeding and the possibility of an

This cure for constipation will work on anyone, from babies to the elderly.
Constipation is when you have to go but "it" won't come out. If you are willing to wait long enough, your own body may soften things up or you could wait for a laxative to work. There is a harmless procedure that is very quick. We'll use the baby as an example. Dip a Q-tip into a bottle of mineral oil (this can be found in any drug store). Insert the oily Q-tip very gently into the baby's rectum just a little - he has a very little rectum. (Older folks can probably go the entire length of the Q-tip just fine and may want to do this two or three times.) Keep the baby lying down for about a half hour. This allows the oil to soften the stool. Older folks should lie down and wait as long as possible. Older kids will probably prefer to do this themselves.
Constipation can be caused by a poor diet or low fluid intake. But, even a good diet can be quickly ruined by a few items. Cheese, peanut butter, bananas, and tootsie rools will stop you up, but eating any of these alone might work for you. Eating a combination of these can be too much for most people. If you simply love peanut butter and cheese sandwiches and want to have a banana or tootsie rolls for a snack, have a nice bowl of beans with dinner.

    What Causes Constipation?
    Printable format
Constipation can refer to either very slow movement of food residues through the colon (slow transit constipation) or difficulty passing bowel movements after they reach the rectum (outlet dysfunction). The specific symptoms of constipation are listed below. Doctors often diagnose constipation if patients have at least two of these symptoms more than a fourth of the time:
    • Straining Hard or lumpy stools Feeling that there is a blockage in the rectum that prevents bowel movements from passing Having to press around the anal opening Less than three bowel movements per week
The large intestine is a tube-shaped muscle, and short segments of this muscle can squeeze together (contract) to close off the inside. Most of the contractions are not coordinated with each other; they just move food residues back and forth so water can be absorbed. However, about 6 times per day, strong contractions begin in the right side of the large intestine and move progressively downstream pushing food residues towards the rectum; this is called a High Amplitude Propagating Contraction. If these strong contractions fail to occur, food residues cannot move downstream and slow transit constipation results.
