Stomach pain is a common symptom of constipation. What is constipation?
Although constipation is a common term, from a medical perspective it is hard to define precisely.
But defining infrequent is difficult when some 90 per cent of people in Western countries have a bowel pattern that ranges from three bowel movements a day to three per week.
And it is possible to move your bowels every day and still be constipated if the stools are hard and difficult to pass. Equally, a daily bowel movement is by no means essential for, nor a sign of, good health.
Provided the bowels move regularly and without discomfort, it doesn't matter if your natural bowel frequency is once every two or three days.

- Constipation is the difficult passage of small amounts of hard, dry stools, usually fewer than three times a week.
- Constipation occurs with the excessive dehydration of the stool, primarily because of slow movement through the colon for various reasons.
- A common misconception is that healthy people have one bowel movement per day. The truth is, most people pass stools anywhere from three times per day to three times per week. If stools are soft and pass easily three or more times per week, then one is usually not constipated. Common causes of CONSTIPATION
- Constipation can be caused by lack of exercise, inadequate fluid intake, poor diet and a diet lacking in fiber.
- Certain medications may cause constipation (narcotic pain medications, iron, diuretics and certain types of antacids, antispasmodics, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants).

What is infant constipation?
Constipation is a condition where stools become firmer and harder. Your child will be troubled or in pain when they need to empty their bowels, and the bowels will not be emptied as often as usual.
What causes it?
    The breastfed baby
A breastfed baby will very rarely get constipation because breast milk is more easily digested.
Breastfed babies have several helpful types of bacteria in their large intestine that are capable of breaking down some of the otherwise indigestible proteins in milk. As a result, their stools are softer, making bowel movements easier.
Breastfed babies also have higher levels of a hormone called motiline that increases the movement of the bowels.

Constipation is a condition in which the bowels are opened infrequently or incompletely, as a result of which the motions are dry and hard. Although one daily movement of the bowels is most common in health, the exact frequency may vary, though less than three times a week is generally regarded as constipation. It is a chronic condition, and must be distinguished from acute obstruction, a much more severe condition. The stools may vary considerably in colour, consistency, and amount, according to the nature and quantity of food and drink taken.

    Constipation What Is It?
Constipation is the passage of small amounts of hard, dry bowel movements, usually fewer than three times a week. People who are constipated may find having a bowel movement difficult and painful. Other symptoms of constipation include feeling bloated, uncomfortable, and sluggish. Many people think they are constipated when their bowel movements are not regular or when they do not occur every day. However, there is no right number of daily or weekly bowel movements. Depending on the person, normal may be three times a day or three times a week. At one time or another, almost everyone gets constipated. Poor diet and lack of exercise are usually the causes. In most cases, constipation is temporary and not serious. Understanding the causes, prevention, and treatment of constipation will help most people find relief. Who Gets Constipated?

Cincinnati, Ohio 45229 Classification of constipation: Various schema are available in the adult literature which utilize measures of segmental transit to classify constipation as normal transit time, delayed colonic transit, delayed rectal and colonsic transit, or delayed rectal transit. Radio-opaque marker studies or scintigraphic studies can be used to make similar measurements in children but are only useful in the most refractory patiens. In most children, it is most useful to classify constipation as being “non-organic” vs. “organic”. One needs to remember that constipation is a symptom. It is not a disease, nor a sign and may be caused by many different disorders (see Table I).

please fill out this feedback form or send us e-mail about this tutorial What is constipation? Most of the time, when we say a child is constipated, we mean he or she passes bowel movements less than every other or every third day and when he or she does pass a bowel movement, it often is large and hard, and perhaps most importantly, it hurts. What are normal bowel habits? Everybody is different, so what is normal for one person may not be normal for another person. When we talk about normal bowel habits, we are talking about averages. It is important to remember that no matter how often a child passes a bowel movement, it shouldn't hurt! During the first several months of life, babies generally pass bowel movements between every other day and four times each day. Babies who are breast fed tend to pass bowel movements more often than do babies who are fed formula. It is not unusual for a breast-fed baby to pass a bowel movement with every feeding. By about two years of age, most children pass one bowel movement every day. 95% of children who are two or older pass between one bowel movement every other day and two bowel movements a day.

    Age 2
by Willow Older and Leah Ingram
Approved by the ParentCenter Medical Advisory Board What's below: How can I tell if my child is constipated? Why is my toddler getting constipated? How can I treat my toddler's constipation? How can I tell if my child is constipated?
When it comes to a toddler's bowel movements, there's no "normal" number or schedule. Your child may pass a stool after every feeding or she may wait one or two days or more between bowel movements. Her individual pattern depends on what she eats and drinks, how active she is, and how quickly she digests and then gets rid of waste. That said, the following clues usually signal constipation:
Why is my toddler getting constipated?
Here are the top four reasons toddlers get constipated: If your child eats lots of milk, cheese, yogurt, or peanut butter, for instance, she could wind up constipated. Toilet training Even if your child is potty-trained, she may not be taking enough time to completely empty her lower colon. That can lead to a buildup of feces that causes the colon to stretch and cramp. An enlarged colon can lead to larger-than-normal stools, possibly big enough to clog the toilet. It can be painful to pass such large, hard stools, making your child even more reluctant to use the potty. Dehydration Movement helps blood flow to your baby's digestive system, so if she's not keeping active that can lead to trouble in the BM department. If she's still crawling, scooting, or cruising, encourage her to do a few laps to get the blood flowing to all her organs. If she's walking, give her plenty of time each day to stretch her legs.

    Constipation
Constipation is the infrequent and difficult passage of stool. The frequency of bowel movements among healthy people varies greatly, ranging from three movements a day to three a week. As a rule, if more than 3 days pass without a bowel movement, the intestinal contents may harden, and a person may have difficulty or even pain during elimination. Stool may harden and be painful to pass, however, even after shorter intervals between bowel movements.
What Are Some Common Misconceptions About Constipation?
Many false beliefs exist concerning proper bowel habits. One of these is that a bowel movement every day is necessary. Another common fallacy is that wastes stored in the body are absorbed and are dangerous to health or shorten the life span. These misconceptions have led to a marked overuse and abuse of laxatives. Every year, Americans spend $725 million on laxatives. Many are not needed and some are harmful.

CONSTIPATION An occasional episode of constipation is not cause for alarm. Stools seem unusually hard. There is unproductive straining. Veterinary assistance may or may not be needed. Here is what you need to know:
    • Straining unproductively can be a symptom of either constipation or large intestinal diarrhea. In either case, small amounts of mucous, gooey, or even blood tinged stool can be passed and there is a lot of pushing involved. Difficulty urinating can also appear as straining. The point is that if all you have noticed is straining, it may not be constipation. Straining to urinate is often an emergency situation so if there is any question about the pet’s ability to urinate, see the vet right away.
It may be tempting to buy a commercially prepared enema at the drug store and attempt to relieve the pet’s problem at home. Some commercially prepared products are toxic to pets so it is important that human constipation products, be they enemas or laxatives, not be used in pets without specific veterinary instruction.
One of the purposes of the colon (large intestine) is the storage of stool. Many pet owners become alarmed if the pet has not passed a stool in a few days, especially in a post-anesthetic situation. In fact, the colon can easily store several weeks worth of stool so if only a few days have passed it may be worthwhile to wait a little longer.

    http://www.callyourped.com/constipa.html
Constipation is the passage of hard stools, that is painful to pass and associated with infrequent bowel movements. Occasionlly, bright red blood may be passed with hard stools. This blood comes from a slight tear in the rectal area from the hard stool.
    • Breast-fed babies rarely get constipated. They do commonly develop an infrequent stool pattern after 2 or 3 months of age. These older breast-fed babies may have one stool every 4 or 5 days, but they are soft and mushy and the babies do not seem uncomfortable. Newborns should pass their first meconium stool by 48 hours of age, if they do not, notify your physician. Once newborns who are a few days old are feeding well, they should be having 3 to 4 or more stools per day. If they are not, this may be a sign that they are not getting enough milk. Constipation is very common in infants starting on solids. Some toddlers who are toilet training may become constipated. They may then start to hold onto their stools and refuse to go to the bathroom and this will create further constipation problems. Severe, constant pain for more than 2 hours
