Compulsive Gambling
Many people enjoy gambling once in a while. However, the difference between social gambling and pathological gambling is like the difference between social drinking and alcoholism. Like alcoholism, excessive gambling can ruin the life of the gambler as well as the lives of the gambler's family. People who become pathological gamblers are often highly competitive, energetic, easily bored people. They may be very dependent on the approval of other people. As a result, they may be very generous. More men than women suffer from pathological gambling and are more likely to seek treatment for it. How can you tell when someone you care about may have crossed the line into pathological gambling? Look for several of the following signs:
  • fails to stop or cut back on gambling gets in a bad mood when tries to quit gambling tries to make up money lost in gambling, by gambling

http://www.rimrock.org/html/gambling.htm
Compulsive Gambling is a progressive behavior disorder in which an individual has an uncontrollable preoccupation and urge to gamble despite negative consequences. Gamblers gamble because they love to gamble. They love it more than spouse, child, mother, or material gain. They are addicted to the excitement and risk created by the gambling situation. So strong is the attachment to gambling that the urge to gamble becomes stronger than the desire for food, sex, or social esteem. Compulsive gambling is driven by an uncontrollable impulse to take risks that eventually undermines everything else in the gambler's life. Playing for ever-increasing stakes, the compulsive gambler often will resort to illegal activities to obtain money, and is more likely than any other addict to become suicidal. The very nature of the high tension associated with constant risk-taking leads to physical illness. Our program is tailored to meet the special needs of compulsive gamblers and their families. We provide a warm, caring, non-judgmental approach to treatment in a safe environment. The Program
Treatment for pathological gambling is offered on both an intensive outpatient and inpatient basis, depending upon the severity of the problem and other criteria.

Compulsive Gambling The word addiction derives from the Latin word addictere, to be bound or enslaved to another. In addiction the individual is no longer master of his fate or captain of his destiny, for he lives and breathes, plots and schemes, and carries on all of his affairs under the thumb of his evil genius, his addiction. Addictions are customarily divided into (a) substance addictions such as alcohol and other drugs, and (b) process addictions such as compulsive sex, gambling, eating, working or other activities. Addiction is correctly understood, not from the characteristics of the substance or process in question, but from the manner in which the individual relates to such substances or processes. Characteristics of the addictive relationship include:
  • salience or exaggerated importance, in which the target of the addiction 'trumps everything' in the addict's life, even at times life itself rigidity, persistence, inflexibility and imperviousness to corrective feedback such as painful adverse consequences past, present and anticipated, as well as the negative opinions of peers

Most gamblers know when to stop. The sting of losing money can become painful enough to send even the highest roller home. A few people, however, will stake all they have on a game of chance and eventually, they lose. For the compulsive gambler, bad luck comes not from just losing a bet, but the inability to stop gambling. Compulsive gamblers are out of control. They will gamble against all odds. A roll of the dice, a spin of the roulette wheel or being dealt a hand of cards becomes more important than family, home or work. Compulsive gambling is an addiction. It can lead not only to financial ruin, but places an added burden on the happiness and well-being of family members. Of course, not all people who gamble are addicted. There are characteristic behaviors that may help people recognize when gambling has become compulsive. These behaviors include:
  • Spending a lot of time gambling or thinking about it.
    Increasing bets to "catch up."
