Pathological gambling affects 1-3% of adults, men more often than women. It usually begins in adolescence in men and later in women. This behavior usually progresses from occasional gambling to habitual gambling. The urge to gamble becomes so great that the tension can only be relieved by more gambling. Higher stakes and personal risks become involved, as well as neglect of other interests, family, and work. Severe family problems, financial ruin, and criminal behavior to support the gambling habit may result. The cause for this behavior is not known. One risk factor may be excessive

It is often associated with denial, allowing the person to believe there is no need for treatment. Most people affected by compulsive gambling enter treatment under pressure from others, rather than a voluntary acceptance of the need for treatment.
Treatment options include individual and group psychotherapy, and self-help

About Compulsive Gambling What is compulsive gambling?
The essential feature of compulsive gambling is the chronic and progressive failure to resist impulses to gamble. It persistently disrupts personal, family, or vocational pursuits. Compulsive gamblers are preoccupied with gambling; they consider gambling to be a source of action and excitement, not just money. Unfortunately, increasingly larger bets are usually needed to maintain the level of excitement. Some compulsive gamblers eventually turn to illegal means of obtaining funds, including bad checks, fraudulent insurance claims or embezzlement.
Are you a compulsive gambler?
Most compulsive gamblers will answer "yes" to at least seven of the following questions (prepared by Gamblers Anonymous):
  • Do you lose time from work due to gambling?

    Compulsive gambling a genetic disorder?
    September 5, 1996
Wed posted at: 4:35 a.m. EDT From Correspondent Lisa Price CHICAGO (CNN) A widely held theory that people may actually become addicted to gambling may now be more than speculation. New scientific research released Tuesday at a meeting in Chicago reveals that compulsive gambling may in fact be genetically founded. "Prior to today, we just go in and explain the signs, the symptoms, the progression," said Christopher Anderson of the Illinois Council on Problem and Compulsive Gambling. "This just underscores what we've been saying with sound, scientific, tangible evidence. In other words here's a snapshot of this illness." The research suggests compulsive gamblers share a gene that predisposes them to addictive behavior. "Environmental factors are important, psychological factors are important. It's a complex disorder. But genes also play a role and this is one of the genes," said Dr. David Comings of the City of Hope National Medical Center. The gene is called the D-2 receptor. In some people, it can be stimulated by alcohol, drugs, sex, food or lots of gambling.

    About Compulsive Gambling
Compulsive gambling is the obvious symptom of an emotional disorder. The emotional factors involved are: inability or unwillingness to accept reality, emotional insecurity, basic immaturity, and lack of self-esteem. The gambler finds that he or she is most comfortable when gambling. Many psychiatrists feel that the gambler has an underlying need for self-destruction. Compulsive gambling brings despair and humiliation into the lives of countless thousands of men, women and children. The compulsive gambler is a person who is dominated by an irresistible urge to gamble. Coupled with this is the obsessive idea that a way will be found not only to control the gambling, but to "make it pay" and enjoy it besides. This disease causes deterioration in almost all areas of the person's life. To contact Gamblers Anonymous write to:

Write an article review The responsibility for dealing with compulsive gambling problems in Michigan was recently transferred from the Michigan Bureau of State Lottery to the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH). To address this responsibility, MDCH now maintains a 24-hour toll-free helpline, 1-800-270-7117, for people to call if they or someone they know has a gambling problem. Neighborhood Service Organization, a Detroit-based crisis intervention organization under contract with MDCH, answers the helpline calls, coordinates the initial consultations with qualified counselors and oversees ongoing treatment of clients when necessary. Current efforts to promote the toll-free helpline feature three new 60-second radio advertisements airing state-wide, including one ad by MDCH Director, Jim Haveman (please see text below). There are new brochures, wallet cards and church bulletin inserts which address compulsive gambling issues and include the Gamblers Anonymous Twenty Questions. There are two new MDCH web sites dedicated to compulsive gambling: www.mdch.state.mi.us/ads/Gambling/

Links to external websites not maintained by the Montana Department of Justice The 1999 National Gambling Impact Study Commission Final Report found that, of the 125 million adult Americans who gamble, 7.5 million were problem or pathological gamblers. A number of different terms have been applied to problem gambling, including "abuse" and "addiction." Problem gambling is behavior that damages relationships, runs up large debts and may lead to crime. People with gambling problems are found in every demographic group. Behaviors that signal problem gambling include a preoccupation with gambling, a need to gamble with increasing amounts of money and trying to make up losses by additional gambling.
      Credit Gambling
It is not legal in Montana to use a credit card to gamble or run up a tab at a bar to pay for gambling activity. Gambling in Montana can only be done on a cash basis. A check or credit card may be used to obtain cash to participate in a gambling activity, but you may only present the cash needed to play the game as the game is being played. A check, credit card, note, IOU, or other evidence of indebtedness may not be offered or accepted as part of the price of participation in the gambling activity or of a debt incurred in the gambling activity.

Although gambling does not produce the cognitive or physical impairment associated with alcohol or drug abuse, an obsession with gambling can be just as devastating. Compulsive gambling can destroy social, personal and occupational or educational performance. Compulsive gambling is considered a form of addiction. The term addiction is usually reserved to explain a compulsive attraction or pathological attachment to a substance, normally a drug. However, we now recognize that some behaviors can be addicting, such as eating, sex and gambling. All addiction is characterized by loss of control, preoccupation, compulsivity, narrowing of interests, dishonesty, guilt and chronic relapse. Addictions to behavioral processes are called process addictions. The process of engaging in these behaviors leads to typical addiction symptoms (withdrawal, tolerance, heightened excitement or euphoria). Process addictions are more common among children of alcoholics or addicts, recovering alcoholics or addicts, or current alcoholics or addicts. Like other addictions, in many cases there are no correlations with high risk situations or history it just happens.

If you have a gambling problem, call the Gambling State Hotline or Gamblers Anonymous Hotline and enlist the support of others who have the same problem. This is paramount. Many compulsive gamblers go through terrifying experiences before they are ready for help. The compulsive gambler needs to be willing to accept the fact that he has lost control over gambling and has a sincere desire to get well. Be honest with family members. Tell them the truth because secrets will eventually come out. Enlist the support of family, friends and religious groups. Also, stop gambling; recovery from this illness is impossible if you are actively engaged in gambling. Treatment Options
Initial treatment necessitates the involvement of people with expertise in the treatment of compulsive gambling. Most counselors in this area will certainly recommend involvement with Gamblers Anonymous. Your doctor will assess the nature of your gambling problem as well as other potential related psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse or other addictive disorders, and/or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which may impact your efforts at recovery. He may prescribe medications to treat these disorders in addition to addressing your gambling problem.
