This section about complex regional pain syndrome is not intended as a comprehensive source of medical information, but as a hub for links to other more detailed sources. If you find this section useful, please support our Foundation by clicking here Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition, which develops after an injury, and continues after the injury has healed. The underlying cause of the condition is unknown. CRPS I was previously called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD). The condition is associated with an injury, such as a bone fracture, or surgery to an arm or leg. CRPS II, was previously called causalgia. This condition is associated with an injury, to a nerve. Symptoms of CRPS include pain, stiffness, skin sensitivity, sudden changes in colour, warmth, and sweating, changes in skin and hair growth, swelling and tremors. Treatment is aimed at relieving pain and increasing mobility in the limb. Physical therapy and occupational therapy aimed at increasing mobility in the limb is very helpful. Psychological support, as in any chronic pain syndrome is also very helpful. Early mobilization of an injured limb helps to prevent CRPS. .

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy also known as CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) SAPF When I was a senior medical student (more years ago than I care to admit), I was working the emergency ward at San Francisco General Hospital. A huge man walked in wearing a leather jacket, a beard to his belt, and a motorcycle helmet, (all 6 feet, 500 lbs of him - at least that's how I remember him). Anyway, all the nurses scampered out of the way to let him pass, and my heart jumped into my throat when he turned into the room I was working. Nervously, I asked him what the trouble was. He raised his hand as if he was about to strike me, and I got ready to jump out of the way. He pointed to his elbow and said gruffly, "Doc, I have an 'owee' right here." I smiled, calmed myself, and examined his arm which had been injured mildly in a fall a month earlier. The elbow and forearm were swollen and red and he would yelp with pain even when I touched the arm lightly. The neurologic examination revealed normal motor and sensory functions of the nerves. In those days, we were taught that pain would affect specific nerves, and that any pain beyond those specific nerves was considered psychological. We would treat what we could physically, and ship them off to counseling. I had doubts that counseling would help this patient so I gave him some pain medicine and scheduled him for evaluations in the neurology and orthopedic clinics. At that time, I, like most doctors, had never even heard of RSD. It was not taught in medical school.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) is a rare disorder of the sympathetic nervous system that is characterized by chronic, severe pain. The sympathetic nervous system is that part of the autonomic nervous system that regulates involuntary, bodily functions such as increasing heart rate, constricting blood vessels, and increasing blood pressure. Excessive or abnormal responses of portions of the sympathetic nervous system are thought to be responsible for the pain associated with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) AKA, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Pain is something that we all experience at one time or another. Although we seek relief using whatever is available, frequently we find that nothing really works effectively. Pain management specialists like those at the Pain Management Department at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation devote their careers to figuring out ways and means to help us. With locations throughout greater Cleveland, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation pain management specialists offer various pain treatment options to these communities.
Although pain is characterized in many ways, some diagnoses are not so obvious. One such diagnosis is complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) formerly called reflex sympathetic dystrophy or RSD for short. This is a disease that is characterized by varying degrees of pain and autonomic disturbances that are reflected in changes of the skin, temperature, color and swelling. Other trophic changes affecting the skin, hair and nail growth also occur beneath the skin and interfere with function of the muscles, joints and bones. While all of these may not be present at one time, their overall effect is to interfere with the recovery of function and treatment. While this disease usually develops after an injury or surgical trauma to the limbs, the name RSD was changed to reflect a better understanding of the painful disorder and to prevent inappropriate treatment directed to the sympathetic nervous system when, in many cases, this system is not involved in the disease process.
