Herbal Relief for the Common Cold
As you put away the heavy coats, you may think you've dodged the cold virusat least until the fall. April, however, is a peak month for sniffles, sneezes, and sore throats. And although there's no cure yet, a growing body of evidence indicates that the herb echinacea really works against the common cold. " Echinacea may not prevent a cold," says herbal expert Varro Tyler, professor emeritus at Purdue University. "But taken at the first sign of illness, it may shorten the duration by two to four days." The most recent study investigated a product called Esberitox, an herbal blend containing two types of echinacea, as well as white cedar and wild indigo. Compared with a sugar pill, Esberitox significantly reduced the severity of symptoms and the length of illness. It worked best when it was taken closest to the onset of symptoms ( Current Medical Research and Opinion, Fall 99). Echinacea is thought to stimulate the immune system so that it can better fight the cold virus. The herb may also attack the cold virus directly. It is less clear how white cedar and wild indigo combat colds or whether they offer cold-fighting advantages. Because echinacea affects immunity, some experts caution those with an immune disorder such as AIDS or rheumatoid arthritis not to take it and others to limit use to eight weeks at a time. Pure echinacea products, such as Echinaguard (Nature’s Way) and Echinaforce (Bioforce), have also proven useful in studies. There are many other effective brands of echinacea: Choose one that works for you. Liquids, tinctures, and pills may be equally beneficial. Esberitox, available at most health-food stores, comes in chewable tablets, a plus for those who don’t like swallowing pills or the taste of echinacea tinctures.

According to several important studies, by using zinc Lozenges within a day or two from a common cold's onset, you can reduce the number of common cold days in half. Zinc lozenges taken at the first sign of a sniffle may also stop the common cold before it starts. Taken daily, zinc lozenges have been shown to significantly reduce the possibility of getting a common cold. In a randomized, double-blind study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (7/00) and conducted at the Detroit Medical Center in Michigan, common cold duration was effectively cut from 8.1 to 4.5 days. The duration of coughs was reduced from 6.3 days for the placebo group to 3.1 days for those using zinc acetate lozenges. Another study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics (11/02) showed that daily use of zinc lozenges can dramatically reduce the number of common colds an individual suffers from by as much as 68%.

Megadoses of vitamin C are controversial. The controversy surrounding vitamin C swirls around the discussion of Vitamin C and the common cold. Many studies have shown that Vitamin C is quite effective in treating and preventing colds. The medical profession is not very interested. The popular media always seem to take the same position. It goes something like this:
  • A study shows positive results
  • The results are discussed
  • The story ends with the warning of taking too much C and that we are all probably better off just eating a proper diet.
It is all such a shame. Linus Pauling's first and second books about vitamin C, Vitamin C and the Common Cold and its follow-up Vitamin C the Common Cold and the Flu explain in great detail the relationship between a colds severity and our vitamin C status. Pauling's work was met with a great deal of controversy and skepticism. Please see the editorial Vitamin C, RDA's and Politics

Conquering the Common Cold Mari Peckham What do we know about the Common Cold?
  • No Cure. Antibiotics, designed to knock out bacterial infections, do nothing when it comes to treating a cold.
  • None of us are safe! No matter how strong and healthy we are, an occasional cold will reduce us to whimpering, sneezing, coughing versions of our former selves.
So, what do we do? Lay back with a box of tissue, pop a couple of cold tabs and wait it out? Not necessarily! Doctors who specialize in self-care medicine say that there is a lot more that we can do to get through a cold comfortably, and possibly more quickly! Here is some of the best advice that experts have to offer on the subject.
  • Vitamin C - "Vitamin C works in the body as a scavenger, picking up all sorts of trash - including virus trash," Says Keith W. Sehnert, M.D., a physician with Trinity Health Care in Minneapolis, Minnesota. "It can shorten the length of a cold from seven days to maybe two or three." Studies conducted at the University of Wisconsin found that cold sufferers taking 500 milligrams of vitamin C four times a day suffered from about half as many symptoms (coughing, sneezing. etc) as those not taking the vitamin.

The common cold is difficult to cure because the virus changes size, shape, and resistance to treatment. It has hundreds of forms, making it almost impossible to develop a vaccine. A cold is always in the upper respiratory tract. If lung involvement, see the doctor. Lung or chest infections can be dangerous. Yellow or white spots appearing in the throat, enlarged lymph glands in the neck or under the jaw, and/or chills and shortness of breath occur, see the doctor without delay.

Also, 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. lobelia tincture every 3-4 hours until fever drops. A tincture of goldenseal and echinacea is recommended for children. 8-10 drops in liquid every 3 hours until flu symptoms are gone. Mix equal parts of juniper berries, black elder flowers, coltsfoot, lance-leaf plantain, and sallow bark. Steep 1 tsp. in 1/2 cup boiling water. Take 1/2 to 1 cup a day, sweeten with honey.

http://www.calgaryhealthregion.ca/hlthconn/items/colds.htm
The Common Cold The common cold is a viral illness that typically causes an inflammation of the lining of the nose, sinuses and throat. As with other viral illnesses, there is currently no cure for the common cold. Hundreds of different viruses are responsible for the group of symptoms we associate with the common cold (for example, the rhinoviruses and the coronaviruses). As a result, it is possible to get one cold after another you will build up immunity to a specific cold virus once you have had it, but there are many different cold viruses out there! Adults tend to have fewer colds than children because adults have developed immunity to some of the cold viruses. Outbreaks of the common cold occur most frequently during the winter months, but can occur at any time of the year.
Many days of work and school are missed and millions of dollars are spent each year on over-the-counter remedies to treat the symptoms of the common cold. Preventing the spread of the cold virus is the key to reducing these numbers. Common cold viruses are spread by:
  • breathing in droplets (containing the cold virus) that have been sneezed or coughed out into the air by a person who has a cold.

Norman Swan : Welcome to the program. Today: should more drugs be available to help people with heroin addiction, including heroin itself? A study of paracetamol and codeine for pain relief; heart drugs which sometimes may make things worse; and the common cold. ZINC AND THE COMMON COLD Research from the prestigious Cleveland Clinic in the United States has found that if you have the beginnings of a cold, there may be a benefit from sucking zinc lozenges every couple of hours. Note we're not talking here about swallowing zinc tablets or taking zinc supplements. I suppose it's more like bathing the upper respiratory tract in a mild zinc solution. Sherif Mossad was one of the physicians involved in the project, which studied 100 people in the first 24 hours of their cold symptoms. Sherif Mossad : They included the usual common cold symptoms: fever, headache, sore throats, scratchy throat, coughs, sneezing and runny nose, that sort of stuff. Norman Swan : So within a day of getting those symptoms, they came to you, and what? half were put on zinc lozenges and half were put on a placebo, or dummy tablet.

"I have not suffered from a cold in the past five years since I have been using the procedure described by Dr. Dän Lee Dimke." -Chris Vermeulen, Johannesburg , South Africa Read More The common cold is the most widespread and prevalent of all human diseases, striking as many as 200 times in the average lifetime. Colds often last from four days to two weeks bringing the more than twenty miserable symptoms we've come to associate with colds and flu. Traditionally, there has been no cure or prevention for this disease. However, exciting, new, scientific evidence, resulting from an accident during research with polio virus, has suggested a simple, yet effective, procedure that anyone can use to actually destroy invading cold virus, for the first time.

The Common Cold What it is
The common cold is an acute upper respiratory tract inflammation that is caused by viruses. A very large number of viruses can produce the symptoms we call a cold. Most cold viruses are rhinoviruses that can be found on various surfaces or in the air. Therefore, they can be transmitted via a cough, sneeze, or most commonly through contact with a surface exposed to the virus that produces cold symptoms. One is not protected against another virus or against the same virus in altered form a few weeks later. Symptoms
Symptoms of a cold usually develop 1-3 days after the virus invades the body. Common symptoms include congestion in the nose, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, hoarseness, a dry cough, a burning sensation in the ear passages and often a sense of feverishness, aching and being run down. Secondary infections are usually indicated by pain, fever, excessive coughing or unduly prolonged symptoms. Treatment
The old sayings such as "feed a cold, starve a fever" are not true. When you catch a cold, you cannot sweat it out, drown it, starve it, or take medication to get rid of it.

November 2, 1978 The Common Cold
Article #270 by T. Neil Davis This column is provided as a public service by the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF research community. T. Neil Davis is a seismologist at the institute. Do Alaskans and Northern Canadians have more and worse colds than people living in the more temperate regions to the south? Evidently not, although colds among peoples of the tropics are less common and less severe than those of residents of temperate climate. The common cold is caused by virus infection and is communicable only among Chimpanzees and humans; no other animals are susceptible. Whether there is a single cold virus or many is not known. But it is known that getting chilled or wet does not contribute to catching cold. One is far more likely to catch cold following an auto accident, according to Dr. John Thigh, director of the University of Alaska's Life Sciences Division at Fairbanks. In fact, he says, severe trauma of any kind is frequently followed by the victim's catching cold. The natural resistance to infection when exposed to cold virus varies from person to person, and an individual's susceptibility may change over the years. It may be hard to sort out just how much a person's resistance depends upon attitude and emotional well-being as well as upon physical factors. In my case, I have noticed that I usually catch cold at the end of every vacation. Evidently the shock of having to go back to work is too much for my system.

PROPAGATING PLANTS IN AND AROUND THE HOME
    ISSUED: 2-90
    REVISED:
Leonard P. Stoltz, Mary L. Witt, and Robert Geneve Many ornamental plants in Kentucky can be propagated by home gardeners. Plant propagation can be a source of enjoyment and a way to increase the number of desirable plants you have.
Plants are propagated by asexual or sexual means. Sexual propagation involves starting plants from seed, while asexual propagation is the multiplication of plants from vegetative plant parts like shoots, roots and leaves or from specialized organs like bulbs and corms. Budding and grafting are also methods of vegetative propagation and are discussed in Cooperative Extension publication HO-39. Table 1 (at the end of this publication) presents methods for propagating some common Kentucky landscape plants. Asexual Propagation
    Reasons to Use Asexual Propagation
The most important reason for asexual propagation is to reproduce plants with the same characteristics as the parent plant. Asexual propagation is the only practical means of propagation when: No seed are produced (French tarragon, peppermint, seedless grapes).
