Common cold
Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine by Belinda Rowland
Definition
The common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory system, which includes the nose, throat, sinuses, eustachian tubes, trachea, larynx, and bronchial tubes. Although over 200 different viruses can cause a cold, 30-50% are caused by a group known as rhinoviruses. Almost all colds clear up in less than two weeks without complications.
Description
Colds, sometimes called rhinovirus or coronavirus infections , are the most common illness to strike any part of the body. It is estimated that the average person has more than 50 colds during a lifetime. Anyone can get a cold, although preschool and grade school children catch them more frequently than adolescents and adults. Repeated exposure to viruses causing colds creates partial immunity. Although most colds resolve on their own without complications, they are a leading cause of visits to the doctor and of time lost from work and school. Treating symptoms of the common cold has given rise to a multimillion dollar industry in over-the-counter medications, yet none of these medications are actually anti-viral to the rhinovirus.

Fighting Cancer With Common Cold?
After 30 years of work, Saint Louis University researchers have genetically engineered a common cold virus to fight cancerous cells while leaving unaffected healthy ones. They received a patent for this research and clinical tests on humans will start soon, according to this news release Dr. William Wold, chair of the department of molecular microbiology and immunology, and his colleagues Karoly Toth, Konstantin Doronin, Ann E. Tollefson, and Mohan Kuppuswamy have found a way to convert the relatively benign "adenovirus" that causes the common cold into an anti-cancer drug that attacks and destroys cancerous cells. "Human cancer is currently treated with surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy, depending on the cancer type," Wold said. "These treatments can be highly successful, but new therapies are required, especially for tumors that have become resistant to chemo- or radiation-therapy." Wold and his colleagues have done this by modifying one gene so that the virus can grow in cancer cells but NOT normal cells and by boosting the activity of another gene that the virus normally uses to disrupt the cells it has infected. "When the virus infects cells, it takes the altered genes with it, and those genes attack cancer cells while leaving normal cells intact," Wold explained.

Cold viruses and certain pollutants, researchers say, both prompt cells to release the kinds of inflammatory agents that make people feel lousy. And when the two are combined the total is greater than the sum of its parts. advertisement
The effects “may add together and pile on top of one another,” said William Spannhake, associate chairman of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The findings are reported in the July issue of the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. Dr. James E. Gern of the University of Wisconsin-Madison called the findings new and potentially useful.

Zinc for the common cold (Cochrane Review)
Marshall I ABSTRACT Order full review View and/or submit comments What's new in this issue Search abstracts ... Browse by Review Group A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 15 February 1999. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Of the eight trials conducted since 1984 investigating the use of zinc in the treatment of the common cold, four have shown some benefit while the remainder have shown no benefit. Treatment masking and reduced bioavailability of zinc from some formulations have been claimed to influence the results reported. This review was undertaken to assess the overall usefulness of zinc as a treatment for the common cold. Objectives: Interest in zinc as a treatment for the common cold has grown following the recent publication of several controlled trials. The objective of this review was to assess the effects of zinc lozenges for cold symptoms. Search strategy: A search was made of the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, MEDLINE, EMBASE and reference lists of articles. Searches were run to the end of 1997.

Echinacea for the common cold
Clinical bottom line:
The beneficial effects of Echinacea for the early treatment of colds were modest. There was no convincing evidence of its effectiveness in the prevention of colds. Three species of Echinacea are used in medicine: purpurea, angustifolia and pallida. It contains flavonoids, glycoproteins and a variety of other active components which are thought to stimulate the immune system. Extracts can be derived from the whole plant, roots or flowers and other plant extracts or homeopathic compounds may be added.

Through the years, some malicious computer programs have come to be known as viruses. Dr. Fred Cohen, a principal analyst with market research firm Burton Group, coined the term when he was working as a graduate student at the University of Southern California in the early 1980s. "There was a resemblance in how computer viruses and biological viruses reproduced," he told TechNewsWorld. Given that similarity, a question has arisen recently: Can the study of human viruses be helpful to computer scientists, who are trying to prevent the next MyDoom from wreaking havoc? For Cohen, the answer is "yes," but for others, the answer is "no."
