Casano, M.D., (601) 932-5244 Jackson, MS Definitions - an illness that is short in duration, usually less than two weeks, does not usually produce fever, except in children. The common cold causes irritation and drainage in any or all of the airways including the nose, sinuses, throat, voice box, and often the bronchial tubes.
What causes the common cold?
Many different viruses can cause the common cold. Each virus may have a slightly different pattern of symptoms and severity. Well over 100 types of cold viruses are known. There is no evidence that cooling the body induces a cold. Infection may be facilitated by excessive fatigue, emotional stress and other factors that weaken the body's immune defenses. Bacteria that live in the nose and throat can gain a foothold and cause secondary infection such as ear infections, bacterial sinusitis and bacterial bronchitis.

And it’s hard to know when the door has opened, because all the viruses that cause the common cold have not yet been identified.
http://www.lung.ca/diseases/common_cold.html
If you have a cold, should you: Take a vitamin pill? Take a laxative? Take a drink? Take a rest? What causes a cold? Many different viruses can cause a cold. Over a hundred have been identified so far. A virus is a disease-producing agent so small that it goes right through the very fine filter that stops bacteria. These cold-causing viruses are present in great numbers in your nose and throat when you have a cold. They are carried on the droplets you expel when talking, coughing, or sneezing. How do you catch a cold? Though a virus causes your cold, a number of conditions seem to increase your susceptibility. People appear to catch colds mainly indoors. Certainly they get more of them during the colder months. This is probably because of more indoor living in proximity to other people’s cold viruses, with closed windows and a lack of circulating air allowing the viruses to remain alive and on hand. On the Appollo 7 space flight, you may remember, first the captain and then, within a few days, the crew came down with colds. Fatigue, poor physical condition, some air pollutants, and – perhaps – chilling seem to give the virus

Red wine is said to be good for the heart
Another health benefit has been attributed to red wine - fighting off the common cold. According to scientists in Spain, drinking wine, especially red, stops people from developing colds. Something in wine seems to have a protective effect because the same was not seen with beer and spirits. The evidence comes from a year long study of 4,000 volunteers. Experts at five universities found that people who drank more than two glasses of red wine a day had 44% fewer colds than teetotallers. Drinking one glass of red wine a day also protected against colds, but to a lesser extent. Lifestyle factors Red wine has been associated with a number of health benefits, including a lower rate of heart disease. An ingredient in red wine may also prevent herpes, according to a recent study. The ability of red wine to ward off colds may be due to its antioxidant properties, according to Professor Ron Eccles, director of the Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University.

Norwalk Viruses Widespread
All of us know someone who has been ill with a “stomach bug” this season. Many of these are undefined viral or bacterial illnesses that typically cause some discomfort for a few days and then disappear as mysteriously as they showed up. But there’s a good chance that the culprit may have been either the Norwalk virus or one of its many relatives. Norwalk virus caused an outbreak of illnesses in Norwalk, Ohio in the 1970’s, and each subsequent related outbreak has been termed “Norwalk-like.” The viruses are second only to the common cold in the occurrence of viral illnesses in the US. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that an estimated 181,000 cases of Norwalk or Norwalk-like infection occur annually in the United States. The high incidence was brought to light last year when hundreds of cruise ship passengers became ill during their trips. The outbreaks, which took place on ships from several different companies, were all determined to be associated with Norwalk-like viruses.

Garlic has traditionally been used to treat the common cold
People who take a garlic supplement each day are far less likely to fall victim to the common cold than those who do not, research suggests. Although garlic has been traditionally used to fight off and treat the symptoms of the common cold, this is the first hard evidence of its medicinal properties. However, more research will be needed to corroborate the data. Common cold factfile The common cold is the most common disease of mankind Adults catch between two and four colds a year. Infants and young children suffer between six and 10 colds each year. A 75-year-old man has suffered about 200 common cold infections during his lifetime. Each person spends between two and three years of his life with a cold. The study found that a daily garlic supplement containing allicin, a purified component of garlic considered to be the major biologically active agent produced by the plant, reduced the risk of catching a cold by more than half.

"This knowledge could eventually contribute to the generation of a vaccine"

Cold 'cure' comes one step closer
Progress is slow towards a common cold cure
US scientists believe they have found a way of blocking one of the principal viruses that causes cold symptoms in adults. Their research has successfully stopped viruses from binding with human cells in a test tube. If the virus cannot bind with a cell, it cannot enter the cell and reproduce, which should stop or at least slow its progress. However, the successful production of a cold "vaccine" is still a long way off - as conditions in a test tube differ greatly from those in the average human nose. The report comes from the US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, and is published in the journal Science. Scientists managed to tailor the bacterium E.coli, which can cause food poisoning in some forms, but also helps to break down food in the gut, so that it mimicked the cell protein which joins with the virus. The theory is that a vaccine created from millions of these proteins would make viruses bind to these rather than the cells.

The common cold is caused by several viruses (mainly rhinoviruses coronaviruses and also certain echoviruses and coxsackieviruses ). These are transmitted from person to person by droplets resulting from coughs or sneezes . The droplets are either inhaled directly, or, more commonly, transmitted from hand to hand via handshakes or door knobs, and then ingested when the hand touches the face. The term "cold" is misleading, as the temperature does not play a role, nor are any other factors known which increase or decrease the probability of infection. Colds are somewhat more common in winter since during that time of the year people spend more time indoors in close proximity of others, increasing the infection risk. Some factors influence the severity of symptoms, for instance psychological stress and position in the menstrual cycle . Also, weak health in general, or other pre-existing conditions such as

The normal cell cycle takes approximately 24 hours to complete. The cell cycle is an immensely complicated process of activation and deactivation of numerous enzymes in specific phases of the 24-hour cycle. See the diagram below.
Caffeine, theophylline and other methylxanthines inhibit the ATM/ATR enzymes in the cytoplasm of the cell. This sets off a biochemical chain reaction that eventually dephosphorylates (activates) Cdc2 in the nucleus, thereby allowing cell division to occur.
One further comment. It should be obvious that the p53 mutation that exists in most cancers could be overcome by phytochemicals that induce the synthesis of the G1 blocker p21Cip1. This is true. Resveratrol, ginseng, EGCG and a host of other phytochemicals can all induce apoptosis in a wide diversity of cancer cells, including breast and prostate cancer. Preparing these compounds so they can be used therapeutically is another story and a topic for another essay. Stay tuned to this web site for further information. The next scheduled essay will discuss how quercetin, a common flavonoid found in many foods (and sold in semi-purified form in health food stores), can inhibit the activity of the VPR protein (thereby preventing widespread immunosuppression), reduce the activity of HIV reverse transcriptase by 100% (thereby PREVENTING infection of new cells) at concentrations of 1-2 micrograms/ml, and reduce overall HIV synthesis by 80% in cell lines in concentrations as low as 40 microM.

New drugs help prevent flu, shorten common cold
Jamie Garris's cold went away much sooner after taking pleconaril, a new experimental anti-viral drug September 27, 1999 Web posted at: 2:25 PM EDT (1825 GMT) SAN FRANCISCO (CNN) A prescription drug to be introduced next month is highly effective in preventing the spread of the flu bug, according to a new study. Relenza, a powder spray inhaled through the mouth, has already been proven to reduce the duration of a bout of flu by a day or two. The study released Sunday shows it also cuts the chances of catching the flu from an ill family member by 79 percent. The drug is the first of a new class of anti-viral medicines that are effective against both major strains of the flu, influenza A and B.

What is it?
The common cold is a virally related syndrome and has been associated with over 100 different viruses, including Human Coronavirus and Rhinovirus. Common symptoms include throat discomfort , followed by sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, coughing and decreased energy level. Fever is uncommon with colds, except in young children.
How can I prevent it? (Also known as top 10 ways to avoid a cold)
10. Stress Reduction. Strong links have been drawn between stress and immune system functioning. The more stressed you are, the weaker your immune system will be and the more likely you are to develop symptoms. 9. Make sure your environment is not too dry. Keep the air moist enough so that your nasal passages do not dry out. Consider using a humidifier. 8. Be careful with items such as money, pens, and keypads in public places. They are all potential sources of infection. 7. Take precaution when flying on commercial airlines. The recirculation systems aboard planes has been implicated in the spread of airborne infectious diseases

Drug research comes closer to curing the common cold
May 18, 1999 Web posted at: 4:27 p.m. EDT (2027 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Rhonda Rowland (CNN) A study released in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has encouraging results that may bring medical science one step closer to curing the most infectious disease there is: the common cold. Research on the drug, tremacamra, was conducted at Medical University of South Carolina. Unlike over-the-counter cold remedies, which offer limited relief and side effects such as drowsiness, the study authors found no side effects from tremacamra. Tremacamra comes in the form of a nasal spray or powder. The study of 196 participants found the drug reduced by half all cold symptoms including runny nose, cough, sneezing, nasal stuffiness, headache, sore throat, malaise and chills.
