WINNING THE COLD WAR AGAINST COLD SORES
Herpes simplex sores heal much more quickly when a vitamin C paste (easily made from of non-acidic calcium ascorbate crystals plus a little water) is applied twice daily. But the greatest natural enemy of the cold sore is the amino acid L-lysine. Keep your wallet in your pocket: you can get lots of lysine by eating lots of beans. An effective dose is about 3 to 4 grams (3,000 to 4,000 milligrams) of lysine daily. That is about a can and a half of beans a day. Wait! Before you go off singing the “Musical Fruit“ song, hear me out: Beans, and all the other legumes, are literally loaded with lysine. Peas are very high in lysine. So are lentils, refried beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, three-bean salad, bean soup, bean burritos, veggie bean-burgers, and even chickpeas (garbanzos). Lima beans are relatively low; soybeans (and anything made from soy) are unusually high in lysine. So be a has-bean! Eat your beans at every meal. All right, I know you are going to ask, so

Cold Sores Diet helps reduce frequency, duration, and severity of cold sores. A lysine-rich/arginine-poor diet is common for managing herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, the underlying cause of cold sores. The theory is that arginine-rich proteins are required for HSV replication and have specific biochemical actions in HSV reactions. Studies suggest that lysine has antiviral properties because of its interference in arginine metabolism, so lysine-rich foods are recommended. Foods high in lysine with a good lysine/arginine ratio are cheese, eggs, chicken, milk, lima beans, fish, potatoes, brewer's yeast, and soy products. Foods with the worst arginine/lysine ratio are chocolate, peanuts, almonds, seeds, cereal grains, gelatin, carob, and raisins. Immune-enhancing nutrients are important tools for battling cold sores. Beta-carotene, vitamin C, flavonoids, zinc , and selenium are vital nutrients for managing cold sores. Because of their lignan content, ground flaxseeds, soybeans, and legumes may also be protective against cold sores. Mega-Recipes

Cold Sores
Cold sores and shingles are those blister-like rashes that come under the category of conditions called herpes. Genital or venereal herpes is another type. The three most common rashes in this group are herpes simplex or labialis (fever blisters or cold sores), herpes zoster (shingles), and herpes genitalis (venereal herpes). Herpes labialis occurs on or near the lips and nostrils. Herpes genitalis occurs in the genital area, and herpes zoster may occur anywhere on the body. The word herpes means "creeping skin disease" and although the rash of these three conditions looks similar, they are very different as to their cause and what they mean. Eruption in all cases is in the form of a small blistereither single or in small patches. They resemble "pimples" except that the fluid they contain is clear rather than pus-filled. They also resemble the eruption of chicken pox except for being smaller. All herpes eruptions are painful, inflamed, and sometimes itchy.

How to get rid of cold sores! Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. Their occurences can be minimized, and new treatments offer sufferers new hope.
I HAVE A COLD SORE, DOES THIS MEAN THAT I HAVE HERPES? Well, technically, yes. A cold sore is caused by the herpes simplex virus 1. However, there is a distinction between the virus that causes cold sores and the virus that causes genital herpes, which is herpes simplex 2. Because of the connotations that the name "herpes" implies, it's no wonder that men and women are ashamed and embarrassed when they have a cold sore. bodyOffer(32130) IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO MAKE THE OUTBREAKS STOP COMPLETELY? Unfortunately, no. Herpes is a virus that remains in the body for life. Once the cold sore is healed, the virus retreats back into the nerve cells. Once there, it stays dormant but can "reactivate" at any time and cause a new cold sore to appear. Though the virus that causes cold sores is permanent, there are some things that you can do to decrease your chances of future outbreaks. While we examine those, let's also take a look at the "triggers" that are proven to bring on cold sores. Sunlight-Many people are very prone to cold sores when they suffer from sunburn or spend too much time outdoors. This is easily remedied. A good sunscreen applied to the lips is your first line of defense against sun-induced cold sores, commonly referred to as fever blisters.

Cold Sores - Everything You Need to Know
Compiled by David Shaw for “It’s Your Health” What are cold sores?

Cold sores are small blisters that form around the mouth that are clear and filled with fluid. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus which lives inside nerve tissue. It is estimated that 80% of the population carry the virus and 60 million people have outbreaks once or more per year. Cold sores are also known as fever blisters or Herpes Simplex or HSV1 This is not the same as genital herpes. What happens the first time you get a cold sore?
Generally, people first get it when they are infants or children. Interestingly enough, only about 20% of those carrying the virus ever get symptoms – that is, break out in actual cold sores. The sores can appear within days or weeks or even years following that first exposure to the virus. The first time symptoms appear they are usually more intense that subsequent outbreaks. For example some people experience more pain at the blister site or even flu-like symptoms including swollen glands, fever or sore throat. Canker sore VS Cold sore
Cold sores usually appear around the mouth while canker sores appear in the mouth. Cold sores are caused by a virus while canker sores are caused by bacteria. If a cold sore is in the mouth, it’s usually on the roof of the mouth.

Definition
A cold sore is a fluid-filled blister which usually appears at the edge of the lips. Cold sores are caused by a herpes simplex virus infection.
Description
A cold sore is a fluid-filled, painful blister that is usually on or around the lips. Other names for a cold sore are fever blister, oral herpes, labial herpes, herpes labialis, and herpes febrilis. Cold sores most often occur on the lips which distinguishes them from the common canker sore which is usually inside the mouth. Cold sores do not usually occur inside the mouth except during the initial episode. Canker sores usually form either on the tongue or inside the cheeks. Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus. There are eight different kinds of human herpes viruses. Only two of these, herpes simplex types 1 and 2, can cause cold sores. It is commonly believed that herpes simplex virus type 1 infects above the waist and herpes simplex virus type 2 infects below the waist. This is not completely true. Both herpes virus type 1 and type 2 can cause herpes lesions on the lips or genitals, but recurrent cold sores are almost always type 1. Oral herpes is very common. More than 60% of Americans have had a cold sore, and almost 25% of those infected experience recurrent outbreaks. Most of these persons became infected before age 10. Anyone can become infected by herpes virus and, once infected, the virus remains latent for life. Herpes viruses are spread from person to person by direct skin-to-skin contact. The highest risk for spreading the virus is the time period beginning with the appearance of blisters and ending with scab formation. However, infected persons need not have visible blisters to spread the infection to others since the virus may be present in the saliva without obvious oral lesions.

http://www.studenthealth.co.uk/leaflets/ColdSores.htm
Cold Sores www.Studenthealth.co.uk Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. They occur in people who have been infected with the virus in the past, usually as a child. The virus lies dormant in the nerve cells which supply feeling to the skin. Intermittently it tracks down these nerves and causes a blister on the lips or other facial areas. The initial symptoms are usually a ‘tingling’. A blister then appears which scabs over. Most cold sores last for about 5-7 days. They usually appear when the individual’s immune system is run down, eg when suffering a cold or some other infection, or if they are tired and stressed. Some people find that exposure to the sun brings on an attack. Treatment can be purely symptomatic, using creams to ease the discomfort, or you can apply an antiviral cream which is available over the counter. It needs to be applied as soon as the symptoms start. If the cold sores are very troublesome and frequent, antiviral tablets may be another option, see your doctor to discuss this. The blister contains particles of the virus so it is probably a good idea not to kiss while you have a cold sore. It is possible to infect the genital area with herpes if you have oral sex. You may continue to shed virus for a couple of weeks after the infection.

Children often become infected with this virus in early childhood and many have no symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may include fever, runny nose, and painful lesions (fever blisters or cold sores) on the lips or in the mouth. The blisters or cold sores usually form scabs and heal within a few days. Cold sores are spread by direct contact with the lesions or saliva of an infected person. Spreading the virus within families is common. To prevent the spread of herpes simplex virus in the child care setting:
  • Make sure all children and adults in the facility use good handwashing practices.
  • Do not allow children to share toys that can be put in their mouths. (Virus may be present even though sores are absent or not noticeable.)
  • After a child has mouthed a toy, remove it from the play area and put it in a bin for toys to be disinfected at day's end.

Cold Sores (Fever Blisters)
What are cold sores?
Cold sores are annoying, small, painful blisters on the lips and nearby skin, including in the nose and mouth. They usually appear when you are sick or stressed. They are also called fever blisters.
How do they occur?
Cold sores are caused by a virus called herpes simplex virus type 1. (The virus is related to herpes simplex virus type 2, which causes genital herpes.) The fluid in the blisters contains live virus. The virus in this fluid can easily be spread from one person to another. The infection can be spread, for example, by kissing, by sharing food or drink, or by not washing your hands after touching the sores. Once you are infected, the virus continues to live in the nerve cells of the skin, even after the sores are gone. Injury, such as a scrape or too much exposure to the sun, and physical illness, such as a cold, seem to cause the virus to become active again. When it is active, the virus causes more cold sores. The sores also may appear during emotional stress.
