HUNAB is an independent not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to strengthen family and community ties. The foundation was created in 2001 in order to promote cultural, artistic and social events with the goal of gathering funds to help and support different civil associations, that are all ready established. HUNAB is a self-governing organization with its own budget, staff and a board of directors from two countries, the United States and Mexico. HUBAB receives nearly 100% of its funding through grants from corporations, private foundations, and individuals. MORE Well, it'd have to be the smiles first off - the smiles on the faces of the children who are hearing for the first time - and the smiles (mixed with a few happy tears) of the parents hearing those children say "Mama" for the first time. Or watching the married couple who hadn't heard each other in over 30 years. Yeah, that's definitely the fun stuff.

Jason is the smartest boy in his fifth-grade class. In fact, his science project was so good, he's going to the state finals. But Jason gets noticed for more than his brains because sometimes his words are hard to understand. Every afternoon, he leaves the classroom for 30 minutes to work with the school's speech therapist. And Jason has a big scar between his nose and upper lip. Some kids wonder if he got the scar in a fight. Actually, Jason's scar came from an operation he had as a baby because he was born with cleft lip and cleft palate. What Are Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate?
Rub your finger over your upper lip. Do you feel the lines between your nose and lip? Those are called your philtrum (say: fill -trum). Now run your tongue over the roof of your mouth. Feel the seam down the middle? That is where your palate grew together. If you open your mouth and look into a mirror you can see that the palate goes from behind your front teeth all the way to the back of your mouth. The word cleft means a gap or split between two things. A cleft lip is a split in the upper lip. A cleft palate is a split in the roof of the mouth. This leaves a hole between the nose and the mouth. Cleft lip, with or without cleft palate, affects one in 700 babies in the United States each year. Cleft lip and cleft palate are not contagious, which means you can't "catch" them from anyone who has one.

A newborn goes through a period of rapid adjustment from fetal life to life outside the womb. A child born with cleft lip and/or palate can have great difficulty making this adjustment. The transition into the world can be successful with the help of many people. C hildren with clefts may have multiple problems which require different specialists during the course of treatment. Many hospitals throughout the country have established cleft teams for this purpose. In such a team, all the specialists work together to meet the needs of a growing child with a cleft. The team approach provides a broad perspective of the child which includes the family, social, emotional, psychological, and educational needs. T he health care providers who frequently participate in a cleft palate team include:
  • Audiologist Ear, Nose, Throat surgeon Geneticist Neurosurgeon Nurse Pediatric dentist Orthodontist/ Prosthodontist/ Maxillofacial surgeon Pediatrician Plastic surgeon Social worker / Psychologist Speech and language pathologist

John B. Mulliken, M.D. Director, Cleft Lip/Palate Program, Children's Hospital, Associate Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School Written for Prescription Parents . Dr. Mulliken can be reached at Department of Plastic Surgery, Children's Hospital, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA 02115 Other Internet Resources Related to Cleft Lip/Cleft Palate All too soon, children grow to adolescence and become young adults. This period of rapid change is difficult for all teenagers (and their parents). There are the usual concerns about acceptance by peers and anxiety about appearance. This can be a particularly stressful time for the young person with a repaired cleft lip. Recollections of the many years of treatment for the cleft will affect reactions to the pressures of young adulthood. Hopefully the child will communicate any anxiety to sensitive, understanding parents so that appropriate steps can be taken to correct any residual problems. Studies of older children born with cleft lip/palate reveal that, in general, they are pleased with the soft tissue correction, speech, and hearing. They may be unhappy with their teeth. The young adult should have normal hearing and should no longer be bothered by episodes of otitis media. Children born with cleft lip/palate have a 5-20% chance of abnormally nasal speech, depending on the severity of the cleft. Secondary surgical procedures to correct nasal escape are usually done in childhood. Thus, the youngster's speech should be normal so that when he/she enters a room of students or attends a party with new friends, no one will know of the repaired cleft palate.

Born to be Cleft :) Hi! And welcome to my cleft site! In case you haven't visited my main homepage , my name is Kim and I'm 29 years old. I was born with a unilateral cleft lip (which means just being cleft under one nostril), and bilateral cleft palate (no palate at all). When I originally started this page there wasn't that many personal stories about being born with a cleft, and so I decided to tell my own story. I'm still putting the finishing touches on the site, but you're more than welcome to look around! :) UPDATE! July 6, 2002 - I'm working on updating, redesigning, and moving the site to where there'll be no banner ads or pop-ups :). BTW, this site has it's own domain name now, BornToBeCleft.com . For now, the address points here, but once the new site is ready, it will go there. So be sure to check in later! Who is this site aimed at? I hope that this site helps others who are cleft, or who are parents of cleft kids, or students who are doing research on speech therapy or clefts or whatever :). Whatever force brought you here, Welcome! :)

What are cleft lip and cleft palate? Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth abnormalities of the mouth and lip. These abnormalities affect about one in every 700 births and are more common among Asians and certain groups of American Indians than among Caucasians. They occur less frequently among African-Americans. Cleft lip and cleft palate occur early in pregnancy when the sides of the lip and the roof of the mouth do not fuse together as they should. A child can have cleft lip, cleft palate, or both. Cleft lip and cleft palate together are more common in boys. It is also important to know that most babies born with a cleft are otherwise healthy with no other birth abnormalities.
    • cleft palate - Cleft palate occurs when the roof of the mouth does not completely close, leaving an opening that can extend into the nasal cavity. The cleft may involve either side of the palate. It can extend from the front of the mouth (hard palate) to the throat (soft palate). Often the cleft will also include the lip. Cleft palate is not as noticeable as cleft lip because it is inside the mouth. It may be the only abnormality in the child, or it may be associated with cleft lip or other syndromes. In many cases, other family members have also had a cleft palate at birth.

Who Are CleftPALS? CleftPALS stands for Cleft Palate and Lip Society. We are a national, voluntary group, comprising parents, relatives and professionals interested in the welfare of children born with cleft related conditions. CleftPALS was started by two friends whose babies were born during the same week at the same hospital. They realised the support and guidance they gave each other should be available to all parents, particularly during the first year. It is our belief that parents who have the friendship and support of others who have experienced similar situations, can offer their children a parental relationship and a home environment free of the stress that might otherwise be present.

What is a cleft lip or palate?
The term "cleft" refers to an opening. An opening in the lip is called cleft lip. An opening in the roof of the mouth (palate) is called cleft palate. The separate parts that form a baby's face and palate come together during early pregnancy. A cleft occurs if the parts do not fuse completely. One out of every 700 babies has some form of cleft lip or cleft palate. Up to 5,000 babies are born with a cleft lip or palate in the United States each year. Cleft lip used to be referred to as a hare lip because it was thought the upper lip looked like a rabbit's lip. The term hare lip should not be used. The defect should be referred to as cleft lip.

Cleft lip can be an isolated event or can be found in conjunction with a cleft palate. It is caused by the failure of the normal structures to fuse together during the formation of the lip. The cleft is an opening in the lip. The skin, muscle, and oral lining tissue is present but has not fused leaving an opening. Cleft lips occur more often on the left side rather than the right side for reasons that we don't understand. More than half of cleft lips occur with a cleft palate where there is a failure of the two sides of the roof of the mouth to fuse in the midline to form a complete palate. Clefts of the lip, incomplete or complete, are associated with some degree of nasal distortion. The children with incomplete cleft lips have a smaller nasal deformity than the children with complete cleft lips. Clefts that involve the lip and the palate are more significant in that cleft palates can affect feeding, weight gain, middle ear function, speech and facial growth. Each of these issues may be noted at different ages, i.e. difficulty feeding and middle ear dysfunction are infant and early childhood issues. Speech difficulties present themselves later around two years of age. Facial growth and dental occlusion are preteen or adolescent issues. A craniofacial team is essential to provide the children and their families the care they need to give the best result.
