Circulatory Problems BASIC INFORMATION DESCRIPTION There are many disorders associated with circulatory problems. When plaque or fatty deposits form along t he walls of the arteries, it causes them to harden and constrict. Hypertension , or high blood pressure, results because the blood exerts greater force against the walls of the narrowed and/or more rigid blood vessels. Hypertension can lead to stroke, angina pectoris (chest pain), kidney damage, and heart attack. A circulatory disease that is brought on by chronic inflammation of the blood vessels in the extremities is thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease) . This disease is most prevalent among people who smoke. It usually affects the foot or lower leg, but it can occur in the hand, arm, or thigh as well. Early signs of Buerger's disease are a tingling sensation (commonly referred to as "pins and needles" and a burning sensation in the fingers and toes. It can lead to ulceration and gangrene; in severe cases, amputation may be required. Another serious circulatory condition is Raynaud's Phenomenon , which is characterized by constriction and spasm of the blood vessels in the extremities, such as in the fingers, toes, and tip of the nose. Cold, stress, smoking, and other factors may cause fingers and toes to become numb; extremities may appear colorless or bluish due to lack of circulation and arterial spasm. This disease most commonly affects women and occasionally leads to gangrene. Poor circulation can also result from

Vertebrobasilar circulatory disorders
Definition: Vertebrobasilar circulatory disorders is a group of disorders in which blood supply to the back of the brain is disrupted.
Alternative Names: Vertebrobasilar insufficiency; Posterior circulation ischemia.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The vertebrobasilar system is also called the "posterior circulation" of the brain. There are three main vessels which provide circulation to the back of the brain two vertebral arteries and one basilar artery. The back of the brain contains structures which are crucial for sustaining life. For instance, the brainstem controls respiration, swallowing, and the level of consciousness. Other structures of the back of the brain are the occipital lobes (the vision areas of the brain) and the cerebellum (which controls motor coordination). Blood flow in the posterior circulation of the brain can be disrupted by many different conditions. The most common cause is stroke caused by hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). This can occur when fat accummulates in a blood vessel wall, causing local inflammation (irritation and swelling with presence of extra immune cells). The areas of inflammation are called "plaques," and they can break off and cause blood clots inside of the vessel.

What Is It? Also known as vitamin B , niacin has earned a reputation (in supplement form) as a natural cholesterol-lowering agent that often rivals prescription drugs in mild to moderate cases. It may also help to prevent or treat a number of other disorders, from arthritis and depression to diabetes. Three forms of niacin supplementseach with a specific therapeutic roleare commercially available: nicotinic acid (also called nicotinate), niacinamide and inositol hexaniacinate, a compound of niacin and inositol (another B-family vitamin). Normally, the body manages to absorb enough niacin from foods to carry out basic functions, working on the cellular level to keep the digestive system, skin and nerves healthy. This vitamin is also critical to releasing energy from carbohydrates and helping to control blood-sugar levels. Interestingly, the body also synthesizes niacin from tryptophan, an amino acid found in eggs, milk and poultry. Health Benefits Although few people in the industrialized world are actually deficient in niacin, many may benefit from additional amounts in supplement form to help treat assorted complaints. Keep in mind that each of the three forms of niacin affects the body differently. Niacinamide has notable anti-inflammatory properties, for example, while nicotinic acid and inositol hexaniacinate affect blood lipid levels and circulation.

How Does Sickle Cell Cause Disease?
The Mutation in Hemoglobin
Sickle cell disease is a blood condition seen most commonly in people of African ancestry and in the tribal peoples of India Schematic Represntation of the Amino Acid Substitution in Sickle Cell Disease Figure 1. The chain of colored boxes represent the first eight amino acids in the beta chain of hemoglobin. The sixth position in the normal beta chain has glutamic acid, while sickle beta chain has valine. This is the sole difference between the two. The molecule, DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), is the fundamental genetic material that determines the arrangement of the amino acid building blocks in all proteins. Segments of DNA that code for particular proteins are called genes. The gene that controls the production of the beta globin subunit of hemoglobin is located on one of the 46 human chromosomes (chromosome #11). People have twenty-two identical chromosome pairs (the twenty-third pair is the unlike X and Y chromosomes that determine a person's sex). One of each pair is inherited from the father, and one from the mother. Occasionally, a gene is altered in the exchange between parent and offspring. This event, called mutation, occurs extremely rarely. Therefore, the inheritance of sickle cell disease depends totally on the genes of the parents.

Evaluation of the efficacy of piracetam in treating information processing, reading and writing disorders in dyslexic children.
Tallal P, Chase C, Russell G, Schmitt RL.
Int J Psychophysiol 1986 May;4(1):41-52
Abstract Piracetam , a new class of drug thought to enhance specific cognitive skills, was given in a 3300 mg daily dose to half of a group of fifty-five dyslexic boys aged 8-13 years, in a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The other half of the subjects received placebo. All subjects met the following criteria: normal intelligence, normal educational opportunities, no severe emotional problems, no neurological handicaps, good physical health, not taking other psychotropic medication, and scoring at least one and one half years below their mental age equivalent on the Gilmore Oral Reading Test. Non-verbal (auditory and visual) and verbal perceptual, and memory skills were examined, and reading, spelling, language and writing abilities were measured using standardized instruments. Compared to the placebo control group, individuals treated with piracetam did not show statistically significant improvements above their baseline scores on measures of perception, memory, language, reading accuracy or comprehension, or writing accuracy. However, reading speed and numbers of words written in a timed period were significantly enhanced in subjects treated with

Piracetam in the treatment of post-concussional syndrome.
Hakkarainen H, Hakamies L.
Eur Neurol ABSTRACT The effect of piracetam , a cyclical derivative of GABA, was compared with that of a placebo in a double-blind study of 60 patients with post-concussional syndrome of 2-12 months' duration. The daily dose of piracetam was 4,800 mg. After 8 weeks of treatment piracetam significantly reduced the occurrence and severity of the following symptoms: vertigo, headache, tiredness, decreased alertness, increased sweating and neurasthenic symptoms. No significant effect was observed on the following symptoms: tremor, orthostatic symptoms, and memory disorders. Side effect were reported by 64% of the patients under piracetam and by 32% under placebo. In the author's opinion, piracetam seems to be a promising new drug for the treatment of post-concussional syndrome. Galantamine Vinpocetine Picamilone Idebenone ... Order

Atrial Fibrillation (AF or A Fib)
More than 2 million people in the United States have atrial fibrillation, making it a very common heart rhythm disorder. In A Fib, the heartbeat is irregular and rapid, sometimes beating as often as 300 times a minute, about four times faster than normal. Although it isn't life threatening, A Fib can lead to other rhythm problems, chronic fatigue and congestive heart failure. Chances of having a stroke are five times higher for those with A Fib. [ more Atrial Flutter (AFL)
Atrial flutter is similar to A Fib because it too is characterized by a rapid heartbeat. Instead of many disorganized signals, however, AFL is caused by a single electrical wave that circulates very rapidly in the atrium, about 300 times a minute, leading to a very fast, steady heartbeat. [ more Sick Sinus Syndrome (SSS)
SSS is not a specific disease, but a group of signs or symptoms that indicate the heart’s natural electrical pacemaker, the sinoatrial node, is not functioning properly. In SSS, the heart rate can switch back and forth between a slow rate (bradycardia) and a fast rate (tachycardia). A permanent pacemaker, sometimes in combination with medication, is the primary treatment.
