Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is characterized by abnormalities in the lungs that make it difficult to exhale normally. Generally, two distinct diseases are involved: emphysema and chronic bronchitis . According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 75% of deaths from COPD that occur in developed countries are directly related to smoking tobacco. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis cause excessive inflammatory processes that eventually lead to abnormalities in lung structure that permanently obstruct airflow (hence the term "chronic obstructive"). Asthma usually can be controlled, but some asthmatics have permanently narrowed airways and suffer COPD. Incidence and Prevalence The American Lung Association and the World Health Organization track respiratory disease and mortality rates related to tobacco use.

National Center for Health Statistics Abstract
Problem/Condition: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema but has been defined recently as the physiologic finding of nonreversible pulmonary function impairment. This surveillance summary reports trends in different measures of COPD during 19712000. Reporting Period Covered: This report presents national data regarding objectively determined COPD (19711994); COPD-associated activity and functional limitations (19801996); self-reported COPD prevalence, COPD physician office and hospital outpatient department visits, COPD hospitalizations, and COPD deaths (19802000); and COPD emergency department visits (19922000). Description of Systems: CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) conducts the National Health Interview Survey annually, which includes questions concerning COPD and activity limitations. NCHS collects physician office-visit data in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, emergency department and hospital outpatient department data in the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, hospitalization data in the National Hospital Discharge Survey, and death data in the Mortality Component of the National Vital Statistics System. Data regarding pulmonary function were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) I (19711975) and III (19881994), and data regarding functional limitation were obtained from NHANES III, Phase 2 (19911994).

COPD takes its toll
In 1994, 25,977 patients in England and Wales died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) compared to 1,516 from asthma. Yet COPD has a lower public profile than asthma. GP Dr David Price asks why

When asked to picture a patient presenting with a 'crippling disease of the airways', most people think of an asthmatic, possibly a child, in the throes of an acute exacerbation, desperately searching for their metered-dose inhaler and relief. Compare this with the COPD patient, over 50 years old with breathlessness, wheeze and productive cough, whose disease is probably self-inflicted by smoking and who responds relatively poorly to treatment. No wonder there is such a gulf between these two images in the public perception and, until recently, that of healthcare workers.

Dr. N. Edward Robinson's Upcoming Talks on Equine Airway Disease Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ("Heaves") Introduction Etiology of COPD Hay contains microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi as well as tiny particles of feed grains, plants, feces, dander, and pollen (see the photomicrograph of a clean hay sample in Figure 2). These tiny particles become aerosolized in hay dust and elicit an allergic response when they are inhaled by COPD horses. While it is believed that the hypersensitivity reaction seen in COPD horses is in response to many different allergens, the primary microorganisms involved in the etiology of heaves are Aspergillus fumigatus, Thermoactinomyces vulgaris, and Faenia rectivirgula Aspergillus fumigatus is a mold that grows on dead and decaying matter such as poorly cured hay. It is thermophilic ("heat-loving") and can thrive in the high temperatures achieved in decomposing vegetation. A. fumigatus forms spores which become airborne and can be inhaled. These spores are antigenic (they are recognized as "foreign" by the immune system and provoke an immune response) and allergenic. Both Thermoactinomyces vulgaris and Faenia rectivirgula are bacteria which produce spores that become airborne and can be inhaled. All three of these species of microorganisms are numerous in moldy hay (Figure 3 is a photomicrograph of moldy hay).

Credits Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Overview What is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease? Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a group of lung diseases that makes it hard for a person to breathe. In COPD, airflow through the airways (bronchial tubes) within the lungs is partially blocked, resulting in difficulty breathing. As the disease progresses breathing becomes more difficult, and it may become difficult to carry out everyday activities. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and Canada. COPD develops over many years (sometimes 10 to 30 years) and is most commonly diagnosed in people over the age of 60. Because of this, COPD generally is considered a disease of older adults. COPD is sometimes called chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD) or chronic airflow obstruction (CAO).

WHY? ( Why this site?)
I am creating this site hoping you will find my links useful/enjoyable/interesting. After years of traveling and teaching (languages and ESOL) I had to retire because of two bouts of respiratory arrests due to emphysema. I stopped smoking (cold turkey, but you don't have to do it this way), went to a rehabilitation program, joined a gym and to reduce the craving for cigarettes kept busy gardening (since my yard is small, mostly herbs and flowers). I always (well, since 1987) loved computers (WHERE ARE YOU?! OH MY COMMODORE 64!) especially DOS, so it is evident that this is first my interest. My links make sense once you read the few lines above. Hope to hear from you soon. Back to Top

What is chronic bronchitis?
Smoking is the main cause of more than 8 out of 10 cases of chronic bronchitis and smoking cessation has the most benefit in the long-term outlook. Chronic bronchitis is a chronic inflammatory condition in the lungs that causes the respiratory passages to be swollen and irritated, increases the mucus production and may damage the lungs. The symptoms are coughing and breathlessness, which will get worse over the years.
The definition of chronic bronchitis is chronic cough or mucus reproduction for at least three months in two successive years when other causes have been excluded.

Management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
What is COPD?
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD for short, is a progressive lung disease that affects millions of people each year. COPD is a general term used to describe specific diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema involves destruction of the walls of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. This results in a smaller number of larger air sacs that have poor gas exchange capabilities. Chronic bronchitis is characterized by a chronic cough and chronic mucus production without another known cause. A person with COPD may have either emphysema or chronic bronchitis, but most have both. Some people with COPD may also have an "asthma-like" or reactive component to their pulmonary disease. What are the Goals of Treatment?
At National Jewish, health care professionals believe people with COPD can lead active and full lives. By diagnosing the disease early, treating symptoms, reducing the risk of complications and educating patients and families about COPD, doctors and nurses hope to improve the patients' quality of life. Our goal is to help people with COPD take charge of their breathing and regain or maintain control of their lives. How is COPD Managed?

RECOGNIZING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE
Recognizing changes in signs and symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an important part of managing your illness. Knowing when symptoms are changing is helpful so that treatment and other interventions can begin promptly. Early treatment is most effective. If severe symptoms are present, it is vital to begin the appropriate treatment immediately. Accurate and timely assessment of your symptoms can help you and your health care provider decide if treatment should begin in the home, at your health care provider's office or in the emergency room. Early symptoms or warning signs are unique to each person. These warning signs may be the same, similar or entirely different with each episode. Usually you will be the best person to know if you are having difficulty breathing. However, some changes are more likely to be noticed by other persons, so it is important to share this information sheet with your family and those close to you. A change or increase in the symptoms you usually experience may be the only early warning sign. You may notice one or more of the following:
