Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the Yeast Connection By William G. Crook, M.D. D uring the past seven or eight years, professionals and the public have been reading and hearing about a disorder that in the words of Dr. David Bell of New York is a "disease with a thousand names." Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Although this disorder has been described for decades, even centuries, it came to the attention of the public following a 1984 outbreak which affected several hundred people in Incline Village, Nevada, a resort town on the shores of Lake Tahoe. It initially was called the Chronic Epstein-Barr Virus Syndrome (CEBVS). However, laboratory studies showed that a lot of people with this disorder did not have elevated levels of antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus. In the spring of 1988, the name was changed to the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. And that's the name most people have been using. However, Dr. Paul Cheney and associates in North Carolina have suggested another name, Chronic Fatigue And Immune Deficiency Syndrome (CFIDS). Still other people didn't like that name either because they felt that the word "fatigue" in the name trivialized the disorder. And they suggested still another name, Chronic Immune Deficiency Syndrome (CIDS).

Evidence Report/Technology Assessment: Number 42
Defining and Managing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Summary
Under its Evidence-based Practice Program , the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is developing scientific information for other agencies and organizations on which to base clinical guidelines, performance measures, and other quality improvement tools. Contractor institutions review all relevant scientific literature on assigned clinical care topics and produce evidence reports and technology assessments, conduct research on methodologies and the effectiveness of their implementation, and participate in technical assistance activities. Overview Reporting the Evidence Methodology Findings ... Availability of the Full Report
Overview
This evidence report is a systematic review that summarizes scientific literature about the following aspects of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in adults:
  • Case definitions. Prevalence and natural history. Treatment.
In an effort to organize and clarify this body of research knowledge, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) contracted for this evidence-based review with the San Antonio Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC). The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases nominated the topic for an evidence-based review. Return to Contents
Reporting the Evidence
Initially, a broad-ranging list of more than 20 questions was considered for the evidence report. Seventeen technical experts from the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom used a Delphi consensus process to prioritize questions that the evidence report could realistically address, given the enormity of the data, and the limits on time and resources. The scope of the report was narrowed to the following high priority questions:

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a controversial and complicated illness that is characterized by at least six months of fatigue (feeling extremely tired or exhausted) that cannot be explained. In many patients with CFS, the disorder begins suddenly, often following a flulike infection or an episode of physical or psychologic trauma, such as surgery, a traumatic accident or the death of a loved one. In other cases, CFS develops gradually.

    Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
by B. Vincent Maier Homepage Research Subject Index Cancer Chinese herbal medicines have been in use for 4,000 years, yet their properties are just now being studied on a cellular and molecular level. Some 500 herbs are currently being used by Chinese doctors, which they can combine to make innumerable remedies. One that has been tested relatively extensively is Juzen taiho-to (TJ-48), which is a hand prepared mixture of ten dried and pulverized herbal plants. In Chinese traditional medicine it has been used to treat cases of extreme fatigue, and anemia. However, recent studies have focused on its ability to reduce the toxicity of anti-tumor agents. Researchers also noted that TJ-48 augments antibody production and activates macrophages by oral administration. The exact mechanism of pharmacological action are still unclear. Other studies by Chinese and Japanese investigators have shown a role between herbal preparations containing zinc and reduced symptoms of fatigue and related conditions. Tests done by Yu-Q, et. al. demonstrate that the amount of available zinc is much higher in an herbal preparation than in an equal molar amount of zinc sulfate, and the clinical effects are noticeably greater. There are also less adverse side effects with the herbal form. This is because zinc derived from plants is bound to an amino acid, or chelated, which makes it easier to be absorbed by the body and carried to where it is needed. Their study suggested that the herbal preparation they were examining could raise the zinc level and cure anemia.

Overview Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complicated disorder characterized by profound fatigue that doesn't improve with bed rest and may worsen with physical or mental activity. Of all chronic illnesses, CFS is one of the most mysterious. Unlike infections, it has no clear cause. Unlike conditions such as diabetes or anemia, there's essentially nothing to measure. And unlike conditions such as heart disease, there are relatively few treatment options. CFS may occur after an infection such as a cold, bronchitis, mononucleosis, hepatitis or intestinal illness. It can start during or shortly after a period of high stress or come on gradually without any clear starting point and any obvious cause. CFS is a flu-like condition that can drain your energy and sometimes last for years. People previously healthy and full of energy may experience extreme fatigue, weakness and headaches as well as painful joints, muscles and lymph nodes.
