Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and its Connection to ADD/ADHD
Preface
After many delays, and revisions, this manuscript represents an attempt to summarize much of the background and current literature to date regarding this confusing phenomenon we call CFS/CFIDS and its potential connection to ADHD in children (and adults).
In writing this, I am attempting to help physicians, patients, educators and others further understand this complex phenomenon. I have attempted to separate what is "accepted" and/or verified by literature publications, versus my "opinions" and "positions."
To all of you reading this, I hope this helps add some insight and understanding of the complex epiphenomena. To all of you who may have and are suffering with this illness, I hope you will soon see an acceleration of our clinical knowledge, such that successful treatment protocols are available in the near future for all.
The question is often asked, "What can be done as patients." With recognition by our medical establishment of the legitimacy of this problem, they are encouragingly on a path to find answers to verify or disprove clinical opinions and further basic science, with an attitude significantly different from even a year ago. This author believes the critical need for patients (via hopefully corporate or private funding sources) is to accelerate steps that will "jump-start" controlled therapies, while our medical establishment searches for all the scientific answers.

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)?
Having chronic fatigue syndrome , or CFS, means more than just getting tired. With the busy lives American women lead, we all get tired from time to time. But, the fatigue with CFS is extreme and overwhelming, and doesn't get better with bed rest. And, it is often made worse with physical or mental activity. This illness seems to happen all of a sudden - one day you may notice that you are very tired and can't manage your normal activities. Your energy level is lower and you often get tired for no reason. You may also feel weak and have muscle pain, difficulty focusing, or insomnia (not being able to sleep). After you engage in physical activity or exert yourself, you may feel tired for more than 24 hours. The extreme fatigue may then come and go, giving you times when your energy level is normal. Sometimes, though, the extreme tiredness never stops, leaving you feeling exhausted and depleted all the time. You notice that you can't get done in a day what you normally would have been able to, before having this condition. CFS is diagnosed only when other possible causes of the fatigue are ruled out, and the fatigue has lasted for at least 6 months. There are treatments to help a person cope with CFS, some of which include medication. Sometimes CFS goes away on its own or a person can have long periods of time, even years, without symptoms.

    Understanding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) disproportionately affects women, but has long been under-recognized and under-diagnosed. CFS is now one of the most common chronic illnesses of our time. It is also one of the most misunderstood. Private and government research is shattering many misconceptions, showing chronic fatigue syndrome to be a major public health problem. A groundbreaking, community-based study of CFS by Dr. Leonard Jason of DePaul University, which was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed a prevalence rate of 422 of every 100,000 Americans. As many as 800,000 people nationwide suffer from CFS, twice the number previously estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (Early CFS epidemiological studies, which were based on physician referrals for case ascertainment, underestimated the prevalence of the illness.) Even more shocking, the study revealed that only 10 percent of those with chronic fatigue syndrome had been previously diagnosed. Thus, 90 percent of people with the illness are struggling without the benefit of medical diagnosis or treatment.

    POTS and CFS
POTS has been proposed as a mechanism for symptoms of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in a series of adult patients. POTS and CFS may share a common pathophysiology particularly in the young . Recently, a review of patients with delayed orthostatic hypotension (delayed POTS) demonstrated a high degree of association with chronic fatigue. Our preliminary data have shown that POTS physiology underlies orthostatic intolerance in the large majority of adolescents with the chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). In those patients we demonstrated loss of heart rate variability consistent with vagal withdrawal, increased blood pressure variability consistent with enhanced modulation of sympathetic tone, and impaired baroreflex with a phase shift causing wide blood pressure swings uncompensated by compensatory HR changes. Preliminary vascular data suggest that these autonomic findings are associated with changes in arterial and venous properties of the lower limbs during orthostasis causing fluid collection in excess of ordinary "pooling" observed in control patients.

You are in: Immune System Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Overview Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a poorly understood condition in which chronic fatigue (tiredness) is the main symptom. This fatigue makes it difficult for you to function. In addition to tiredness, you may also have many symptoms that do not fall into a particular category (called nonspecific symptoms) and that may or may not have a psychiatric or neurologic basis. A set of criteria to help a doctor diagnose CFS was created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If your tiredness continues for over 6 months and makes it difficult to function, but you do not meet the criteria for CFS, your condition is called idiopathic chronic fatigue. Chronic fatigue is a common complaint. Some 20% of people who go to a doctor have chronic tiredness. But the number of people who meet the criteria for CFS is about 2-7.3 per 100,000.

    Welcome to Moms In Flight
Moms in Flight is for anyone suffering from a Chronic Illness of any kind and a mom... moms-to-be, moms raising children right now, Grandmoms, moms with grown children, empty-nest moms... in the midst of that illness.  Let's face it! Whether you're just starting a family, or your children are grown, we can all benefit from each other and be uplifting to one another. You may be at the beginning of your journey and just finding out what you're dealing with.  You may be in the middle of your journey:  knowing what you have, but not sure what to do next.  Or, you may be near the end of your journey:  you know what it is, you've accepted it, and, well, now what Moms in Flight is a place to come for encouragement, help in day-to-day living with chronic illness, and eventually, "Soaring Above Chronic Illness." We don't profess to have all the answers.  We're still finding them out for ourselves.  But we want this to be a place of encouragement.  A place where we all can feel safe, warm and cared for.  Let's face it.  Being ill with a chronic illness, especially one that is invisible to the outside world, can be very frustrating. You can check out The Journey, where we introduce ourselves and, well, tell you a little about our respective journeys.

Sixteen-year-old Samantha is always exhausted. For months she's had swollen glands and weakness. She has difficulty concentrating in school, frequently has headaches, and finds it hard to get out of bed most mornings. Although Samantha's parents suspect she's involved in too many activities, they have also begun to worry because her grades have plummeted and her symptoms have worsened. When Samantha and her parents visit the doctor to try to find out what's wrong, the doctor takes a detailed history of Samantha's symptoms, paying careful attention to how long they have been going on. After a full physical examination and several blood tests, it is determined that Samantha has a condition known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). What Is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a noncontagious disease that was first recognized as a physical illness in the 1980s and remains the subject of a great deal of controversy. Even now, as increasing numbers of people are being diagnosed with the disease, there are still many people inside and outside the health professions who doubt its existence or maintain that it's a psychological ailment. But several years of research have confirmed that CFS is indeed a physical illness - just one that's not fully understood. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that as many as half a million people in the United States have a CFS-like condition.

MCS is a disorder triggered by exposures to chemicals in the environment. Individuals with MCS can have symptoms from chemical exposures at concentrations far below the levels tolerated by most people. Symptoms typically occur in more than one area in the body, such as the nervous system and the lungs. Exposure may be from the air, from food or water, or through skin contact. The symptoms may come and go with exposures, though some individuals may have delayed reactions. As MCS gets worse, reactions become more severe and increasingly chronic, often significantly affecting bodily functions. (Envionmental Illness Society of Canada)

Come in. Welcome to my home.
Glad you could come. Why don't you have a seat in that chair, if you'd like. I'll pour you a cup of tea and we can talk. This is a safe place and you can relax. It can be pretty frustrating out there to say the least. I'm a retired physician. I practiced medicine for 20 years before I got sick. And then I found my learning had just begun. A dysfunctional health care system. Bewildering alternative medicine. Endless mind boggling stuff on the internet. Disability. I've been there. I went to a lot of doctors, but I learned nothing from them about this subject. Doctors are very good at treating acute illnesses like an injury, but they are poorly trained to cope with many chronic illnesses such as this. I started learning from the internet, but it was slow because most of the material was useless and confusing. I was looking for things that would help, and not a lot of theories. Now, after many years of research, I want to offer you what I didn't get, and I think you deserve. A strategy that is clear, to the point, and step by step. One thing that I can tell you for sure, is that everybody is different. There are lot's and lot's of things that can go wrong to make a person sick. So what works for one person may not work for another.

CFS is characterised by overwhelming tiredness
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a condition with a diverse range of symptoms but particularly characterised by profound and persistent tiredness. Formerly known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) it is often viewed as a new disease but doctors now believe it has been around for decades. When ME was first outlined as a condition in the 1980s many doctors were sceptical about whether it was a real condition or "all in the mind". Medical experts have now developed a list of criteria which identify chronic fatigue syndrome. How do I know I have CFS? One in five people consulting their GP report chronic tiredness but only a small proportion of these have CFS. The main feature of CFS is overwhelming tiredness which disrupts the ability to carry out normal activities. The US Center for Disease Control has developed a list of diagnostic criteria for the condition.

Immune system blamed for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Melatonin could be the secret behind chronic fatigue syndrome
Scientists are confident they have found a physical cause for the controversial condition Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. They believe it may be caused by the body's reaction to stress which effectively leads to the immune system becoming overloaded. Researchers found that people with CFS produced unusually high levels of the hormone melatonin, which stimulates the immune system and plays an important role in promoting sleep. Melatonin is vital for maintaining the body's correct diurnal rhythms - helping a person sleep at night and stay awake during the day. For this reason it is used to treat insomnia and jet-lag. The researchers at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals, London, are convinced that the hormone is the key to CFS. They believe their findings may lead to the much-misunderstood condition being re-classified as an immune system disorder. Some doctors still believe CFS to be "all in the mind", although most now agree that to some degree it has a physical cause.
