Some members and outside parties have donated funds for the Governor Rudy Perpich Memorial Lectureship. I want to thank these individuals. Mrs. Perpich and I are appealing to our members to donate to this fund so that we can support the expenses of the individual selected to present this lecture.
I have provided you with an overview of what is coming in the future. The AACFS is committed to serving the membership and to providing assistance so that there can be better diagnosis of these diseases, better understanding of their pathogenesis, and better insight into the best treatments.
I encourage you to be more active by communicating with us about your ideas, problems in controlling the illness, and ideas that may shed light on this illness. I want to see that, for the upcoming 2004 International Conference, there is more attendance from the membership. I also request that you encourage your associates to join the AACFS. I wish each of you a happy holiday season. Please do not hesitate to contact the Board of Directors for any question or suggestions.

Education and Military Service
I am a Vietnam Era U. S. Air Force Veteran who served from 1962 to 1966 under the maiden name of Larmore. After completing Basic Training at Lackland (January 1963), I was stationed with the 3201st Air Base Wing WAF Squadron at Eglin AFB, Florida. In 1965 I was selected as the Fire Prevention Queen for the base. My last assignment before receiving a medical discharge was in Air Operations at Eglin. Prior to entry into the Air Force, I graduated from Samuel Ready Girls' School, Baltimore, MD. Before that I attended Wicomico County Public Schools including Nanticoke Elementary School from which my mother had graduated. After discharge from the Air Force, I moved to Towson, Maryland and began attending Johns Hopkins University Summer School. There was a slight 9 month interruption along the way. His link can be found below. Eventually, I graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College , Lynchburg, Virginia in 1979.

Welcome to a website by and for people with the illness Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), known for 40 years in the U.K. by the name Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.), and also sometimes called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). I have been diagnosed with CFIDS/M.E. since December 1994; today I would probably call the variety from which I suffer R.E.D.D. , for Rnase-L Enzyme Dysfunction Disease. Essays I have written about the disease, and my experiences with the disease, can be found at "Living Life, Living Death: Essays on CFIDS/M.E." . I am currently working on a book manuscript of the same title. This website is undergoing a number of changes. I still own the domain, cfids-me.org, but I've had to shift its storage location and that's taken a couple of weeks to accomplish; I'm also going to change the contents a bit because I haven't had time to work on it for a while. Please be patient, and I'm sorry for any inconvenience this has caused anyone. If you have the DD (d- disease, as we sometimes call it - insert your own adjective ...), and/or one of the sister illnesses Fibromyalgia, Multiple Chemical Sensitivies (MCS), Gulf War Syndrome (GWS), or Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) - Welcome. You are among friends.

According to a November 1996 Journal of American Medical Association report, 100 million Americans are suffering from a chronic illness - from chronic fatigue syndrome to cancer. Whatever the origin or origins of the increase of these illnesses- or the appearance of new ones- a solution to the problem must be found. We continue to strive to use this web site to disseminate information from sources to solutions. As we see it, discovery leads to diagnostics that drive therapeutics. The cooperation of scientists, healthcare providers, manufacturers and regulatory agencies is required.

Magnesium is a must. The diets of all Americans are likely to be deficient........Even a mild deficiency causes sensitiveness to noise, nervousness, irritability, mental depression, confusion, twitching, trembling, apprehension, insomnia, muscle weakness and cramps in the toes, feet, legs, or fingers. Adelle Davis, writing in Let's Have Healthy Children Read my Magnesium (Mg) is a trace mineral that is known to be required for several hundred different functions in the body. A significant portion of the symptoms of many chronic disorders are identical to symptoms of magnesium deficiency. Studies show many people in the U.S. today do not consume the daily recommended amounts of Mg. A lack of this important nutrient may be a major factor in many common health problems in industrialized countries. The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Comprehensive Approach to Its Definition and Study
Abstract of the paper on a New Case Definition for CFS 1994
The complexities of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the methodologic problems associated with its study indicate the need for a comprehensive, systematic, and integrated approach to the evaluation, classification, and study of persons with this condition and other fatiguing illnesses. We propose a conceptual framework and a set of guidelines that provide such an approach. Our guidelines include recommendations for the clinical evaluation of fatigued persons, a revised case definition of the chronic fatigue syndrome, and a strategy for sub grouping fatigued persons in formal investigations.

The M.E./Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Society of Victoria Inc. is a non-profit charitable organisation dedicated to serving the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Community in Victoria and Tasmania. The Society is run entirely by volunteers and relies on donations and membership fees to allow us to continue our valuable work. What is 'Chronic Fatigue Syndrome'? Don't be fooled by the name. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS, also known as M.E. or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) is a serious and debilitating illness that can last for years, and sometimes for life. The latest research suggests that the symptoms of CFS may be caused - at least in part - by a continuing immune response to a real or perceived challenge. Symptoms of CFS include overwhelming exhaustion, both physical and cognitive, memory and concentration impairment, an intense 'flu like feeling, muscle pain, sleep disturbance, headaches, disturbance of balance and other symptoms. There is no effective treatment for CFS, so correct management of the illness plays an important role. This is where the Society can offer guidance. Also see our

Both are much more common than people think and doctors usually don't look for them. I have added two pages on these. Welcome to my web-site. It contains information not only on CFS, but also irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia. (Many people that have one also have the others.) The purpose of this site is to integrate the ideas I've gotten from different people and add a few of my own. I have kept a careful journal of what has helped and what has not. I work with an excellent doctor. I've found that while many people have parts of the answer, no one knows the whole answer. The purpose of this site is to bring together as many of those answers as possible. Eight years ago I was suffering from full-fledged Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I was in a constant fog, had constant ringing in my ears, sinus problems, pain in the joints, a sore throat, and a persistent jock rash. My body temperature was 97.2°f. I had severe gastrointestinal problems. Sexually, I had little feeling.

    WHAT CAUSES CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME?
General Theories for Chronic Fatigue Causes
Theories abound about the causes of chronic fatigue syndrome. Many physicians still doubt that CFS is an actual disease but believe rather that it is a component of a psychological disorder or a symptom of other problems, similar to anemia and high blood pressure. Indeed, no primary cause has been found that explains all cases of CFS. And, there are no consistent biologic factors that would allow objective measures, such as blood tests or brain scans, to definitively diagnose CFS.
Convergence of Factors. A number of experts believe that CFS develops from a convergence of conditions that may include the following:
    • Genetic factors.
      Brain abnormalities.
      A hyper-reactive immune system.
      Viral or other infectious agents.
      Psychiatric or emotional conditions.
For example, the majority of patients report some preceding moderate to serious physical illness (e.g., a chronic viral infection) or emotional event (e.g., episode of depression). Some experts theorize that such events, alone or in combination, may interact with certain neurologic and genetic abnormalities to trigger the event. Still, it is not clear what sequence of events actually leads to the fatigue and other prominent symptoms of this disorder. Nor is there any specific brain or nervous system abnormality that experts can point to with assurance. Research published in 2001 indicates that CFS is more common among identical twins (who share the same genes) than fraternal twins (who share only some genes). Inheritance, then, may play a role in roughly 30% to 50% of cases, similar to the influence thought to occur in depression or alcoholism, although specific genes have not yet been identified.
