What is chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a tiny bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis.
Why should I know about it?
Chlamydia is the most common treatable STD. It often presents no symptoms in men or women unless it leads to complications - when treatment can sometimes be too late to stop permanent damage.
  • In some women, infection can damage the Fallopian tubes, which conduct eggs from the ovaries to the womb. This can stop the tubes working properly and they can become completely blocked.
Chlamydia is the most common preventable cause of infertility in women. When the fallopian tubes are blocked, no pregnancy is possible naturally. One option is IVF (in-vitro fertilisation), but availability on the NHS is still patchy and has variable success rates: usually no more than 20 per cent of women end up with a baby.

Welcome ! This web site is the place for me to tell my Asthma Story and hopefully stimulate thought and hope for those with Asthma. At the age of 30, I contracted severe Asthma and came close to death in 1995 when a near fatal Asthma attack put me into full respiratory and cardiac arrest! A neighbor took this picture while the paramedics performed CPR on me on my front porch.
After this close call, I decided to try and reclaim my life and fight this terrible disease despite the claim from the medical community that asthma is incurable.
A friend of ours who is a pharmacist then found fascinating new research by Dr. David Hahn in medical journals about the bacteria Chlamydia pneumoniae (and mycoplasma) and the interesting link it has to asthma.
I am not a doctor and do not offer medical advice here. This is only a place for me to share the steps I took to completely rid myself of asthma. Now being totally cured, I recently completed hiking over 200 miles of rugged terrain on the

Gestational Psittacosis in a Montana Sheep Rancher
In humans, psittacosis is primarily a flulike illness following exposure to psittacine birds. In rare cases, pregnant women exposed to Chlamydia psittaci can contract gestational psittacosis: atypical pneumonia, sepsis, and placental insufficiency resulting in premature birth or miscarriage. In the United States, only two cases of gestational psittacosis have been reported, both from exposure to psittacine birds. Eleven other cases have been reported worldwide, mostly in the United Kingdom, all from exposure to infected birth fluids and membranes of farm mammals, notably sheep and goats. In these mammals, C. psittaci inhabit the reproductive tract, are transmitted sexually or by the fecal-oral route, and cause miscarriages. The case of gestational psittacosis in a Montana sheep rancher is the first farm animal-related case reported in the United States. Pregnant women should avoid close contact with C. psittaci -infected animals, particularly sheep and goats during the birthing season. Obstetricians should consider this diagnosis along with early antibiotic treatment and cesarean section delivery in the context of the patient's case history. Psittacosis is a flulike systemic infection, often with fever, headache, and atypical pneumonia, caused by

Screening for chlamydia A CostEffective Way to Promote Health. Ratesof chlamydia infection are highest among young men and women.
    http://www.plannedparenthood.org/library/STI/Chlamydia_fact.html
Screening for Chlamydia: A Cost-Effective Way to Promote Health
An estimated 15.3 million cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occur annually in the United States: two-thirds of these occur among people under the age of 25 (KFF, 1998). Chlamydia is the most common bacterial STI with an estimated 3 million new cases each year (KFF, 1998). It was also the most common of the notifiable infectious diseases reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1997 (DSTDP, 1998). Chlamydia trachomatis is a bacteria that can infect mucus membranes in the eye, throat or in the penis, vagina, cervix, anus, or urethra during vaginal or anal intercourse. It can also be transmitted during birth and during oral sex, although oral transmission is rare.
The costs of treating the sequelae to these untreated infections is enormous. Great savings can be accomplished by timely and targeted screening and early treatment.
Untreated chlamydia can lead to severe and costly complications in women, men, and newborn infants.
    • While it is not known exactly how many cases of PID are caused by chlamydia, a study of HMO patients found that screening for chlamydia reduced the incidence of PID by more than 50 percent (Scholes et al., 1996).

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) More than 4 percent of young adults in the United States are infected with chlamydia, and the sexually transmitted disease is six times more common in blacks than in whites, researchers say. In a nationally representative study of 14,322 people ages 18 to 26 conducted in 2001-02, University of North Carolina researchers found that 4.7 percent of women and 3.6 percent of men had chlamydia. The overall prevalence was 4.2 percent. The study appears in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association. The researchers said their figures are slightly higher than some previous nationwide estimates, which were based on different methodology. The prevalence was lowest among whites 1.94 percent and highest among blacks 12.54 percent. Other infection rates were 10.4 percent of Native Americans, 5.9 percent of Hispanics and 2 percent of Asian-Americans.

Overview Chlamydia is a bacterial infection of your genital tract that spreads easily through sexual contact. You may not know you have chlamydia at first because the signs and symptoms of pain and fluid discharge don't show up right away, if they show up at all. Many people experience no signs and symptoms. The disease isn't difficult to treat once you know you have it. If it's left untreated, however, chlamydia can lead to more serious health problems. The condition is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. The cause is the bacterium

    General Concepts
    Clinical Manifestations
Ocular Infections: Chlamydia trachomatis causes trachoma and inclusion conjunctivitis. Trachoma is characterized by the development of follicles and inflamed conjunctivae. The cornea may become cloudy and vascularized; repeated infections are a common cause of blindness. Inclusion conjunctivitis is a milder inflammatory conjunctival infection with purulent discharge. Genital Infections: Some C trachomatis strains cause genital infections, including nongonococcal urethritis in men and acute salpingitis and cervicitis in women. Other strains cause lymphogranuloma venereum, a venereal disease with genital lesions and regional lymph node involvement (buboes). Respiratory Infections: Chlamydia psittaci usually causes an influenzalike illness called psittacosis. Chlamydia pneumoniae (TWAR organism) causes atypical pneumonitis in humans.
    Structure, Classification, and Antigenic Types
Chlamydiae are obligate intracellular bacteria. They lack several metabolic and biosynthetic pathways and depend on the host cell for intermediates, including ATP. Chlamydiae exist as two stages: (1) infectious particles called elementary bodies and (2) intracytoplasmic, reproductive forms called reticulate bodies. The chlamydiae consist of three species, C trachomatis, C psittaci

    Sexual Health - STIs (infections)
Chlamydia by fpa What is chlamydia and how is it passed on? What happens if chlamydia isn't treated? Where to go for help and advice ... How to avoid STIs? What is chlamydia and how is it passed on? Chlamydia is one of the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and is easily transmitted. It usually infects the genitals of both men and women, but can also infect the throat, rectum and eyes. Over 2/3 of women and half of men who have chlamydia have no symptoms at all . Symptoms can include unusual discharge from the vagina or penis and pain on passing urine. It's particularly common in young people, but can affect anyone who is sexually active. Chlamydia can cause serious health problems if left untreated. The good news is it's easily treated with a course of antibiotics from a GP or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic. Chlamydia is mainly passed from one person to another through sexual activity such as:
    • vaginal or anal sex with an infected partner
    • oral sex, but this is less common
