What is chlamydia?
Chlamydia, is a curable sexually transmitted disease ( STD ) caused by a bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis. It is estimated that chlamydia is the most prevalent STD with 3 - 4 million new cases each year. Chlamydia infection is very common among young adults and teenagers. It is the number one bacterial sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States today. Chlamydia is known as the "silent epidemic". It is called a Silent Epidemic because 75% of the women and 50% of the men with the disease have no symptoms. How Can I get Chlamydia? You can get genital chlamydial infection during oral, vaginal, or anal sexual contact with a partner that is affected. An infant can get chlamydia from an infected mother during pregnancy. What are the Symptoms? Different individuals experience different symptoms. Unfortuantely 75% of women and 50% of men with the disease are experience no symptoms. When they do experience symptoms, the possible symptoms are: discharge from the penis or vagina and a burning sensation when urinating. Women may experience lower abdominal pain or pain during intercourse, bleeding during intercourse and bleeding between menstrual periods. Men may experience burning and itching around the opening of the penis and/or pain and swelling in the testicles. Symptoms may appear within one to three weeks after being infected.

Chlamydial Infection
What is Chlamydial Infection?
Chlamydial ("kla-MID-ee-uhl") infection is a curable sexually transmitted infection (STI), which is caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis . You can get genital chlamydial infection during oral, vaginal, or anal sexual contact with an infected partner. It can cause serious problems in men and women as well as in newborn babies of infected mothers. Chlamydial infection is one of the most widespread bacterial STIs in the United States. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 4 million people are infected each year. Health economists estimate that chlamydial infections and the other problems they cause cost Americans more than $2 billion a year.
What Are the Symptoms of This STI?
Because chlamydial infection does not make most people sick, you can have it and not know it. Those who do have symptoms may have an abnormal discharge (mucus or pus) from the vagina or penis or pain while urinating. These early symptoms may be very mild. Symptoms usually appear within one to three weeks after being infected. Because the symptoms may be mild or not exist at all, you might not seek care and get treated. The infection may move inside the body if it is not treated. There, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women and epidydimitis in men, two very serious illnesses.

What Is It?
Chlamydia (pronounced: kluh- mid -ee-uh) is an STD that is caused by bacteria called CHLAMYDIA TRACHOMATIS . Although you may not have heard its name, chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. The bacteria can move from one person to another through sexual intercourse or oral-genital contact. It can also enter the body through the eye: if a person touches bodily fluids that contain the bacteria and then touches his or her eye, he or she may get chlamydia. Chlamydia can also be passed from a mother to her baby while the baby is being delivered. You cannot catch chlamydia from a towel, doorknob, or toilet seat. How Does a Girl Know She Has It?
It can be difficult for a girl to know whether she has chlamydia; most girls don't have any symptoms. That means you can have chlamydia and not know it! Chlamydia can cause an unusual vaginal discharge or pain during urination. Some girls with chlamydia also have pain in their lower abdomens, pain during sexual intercourse, or bleeding between menstrual periods . Sometimes chlamydia also causes a mild fever. Signs and Symptoms:
Chlamydia trachomatis causes infections that can affect the eyes, lungs, or urogenital (urinary-genital) area, depending on the age of the person infected and how the infection is transmitted. Chlamydial trachomatis infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States. Females with a chlamydial infection may have vaginal redness and discomfort accompanied by a vaginal discharge. Males may have a discharge from the urethra (the opening where urine comes out) and burning upon urination. Depending on the extent of the infection, there may occasionally be a low-grade fever. People with chlamydial infections often have no symptoms at all. Although an infected person may have no symptoms, he can still spread the infection to other sexual partners.

Chlamydia is the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in the United States. There are roughly four million cases annually, most occurring in men and women under the age of 25. Direct and indirect costs of chlamydia (mainly costs for complications) total $24 billion a year. This is most likely an underestimate, since many people with chlamydia infection likely have gonorrhea, as well. Hence, costs to diagnose and treat the latter sexually transmitted disease must be included.

Vaccines The surface of chlamydia does not contain proteins that are distinctive enough to induce a full immune response. The cell wall does contain an exoglycolipid antigen that induces a weak immune response (for reasons unknown, the immune response is weaker to carbohydrate antigens). This is the basis for a recent vaccine developed by researchers at Johns Hopkins University. The researchers are developing a protein version of the antigen by injecting

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis ). An estimated 3 million Americans get chlamydia each year. Three of every four reported cases occur in young people under age 25. By age 30, 50 percent of sexually active women probably have had chlamydia. Chlamydia is a serious disease that can damage a woman's reproductive organs - the uterus (womb), ovaries (organs that make eggs), and fallopian tubes (tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus). The disease often has only mild or no symptoms. When diagnosed, chlamydia can be easily treated and cured with antibiotic drugs.
How do you get chlamydia?
Sexually active women and men can get chlamydia through sexual contact with an infected person. This STD can be transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Because there are often no symptoms, people who are infected may unknowingly pass the bacteria to their sex partners. Chlamydia can also be passed from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth. Babies born to infected mothers can get chlamydial infections in their eyes and respiratory tracts. The more sex partners a person has, the greater the risk of getting infected with chlamydia. Chlamydia often occurs together with

Chlamydia pneumoniae Causes Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Antibodies to Chlamydia pneumoniae are rarely found in children less than five years old; the primary infection usually occurs between ages 8 and 16. Reinfections occur throughout childhood, and the rate of infection is higher among men than women. In non-elderly people it causes mild respiratory symptoms, but may cause pneumonia in the elderly. Indications of the presence of Chlamydia pneumoniae have been found in the majority of studies which have looked for them. C pneumoniae was found in 11/25 aortas, 5/9 iliac arteries, 2/5 femoral arteries, and 1/2 iliac veins, by PCR in AAA specimens. It was also seen in vascular tissue from 3/6 "ostensibly normal" liver transplant donors, which showed some atherosclerotic changes. "The figures are perhaps conservative as it is possible that more specimens would be found to be C pneumoniae positive if a larger amount of tissue was examined." (Detection and widespread distribution of Chlamydia pneumoniae in the vascular system and its possible implications. G Ong, BJ Thomas, AO Mansfield, BR Davidson, D Taylor-Robinson. J Clin Pathol 1996 Feb;49(2):102-106).

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis , which can damage a woman’s reproductive organs. Even though symptoms of chlamydia are usually mild or absent, serious complications that cause irreversible damage, including infertility, can occur “silently” before a woman ever recognizes a problem. Chlamydia also can cause discharge from the penis of an infected man. Chlamydia is the most frequently reported bacterial sexually transmitted disease in the United States. In 2002, 834,555 chlamydial infections were reported to CDC from 50 states and the District of Columbia. Under-reporting is substantial because most people with chlamydia are not aware of their infections and do not seek testing. Also, testing is not often done if patients are treated for their symptoms. An estimated 2.8 million Americans are infected with chlamydia each year. Women are frequently re-infected if their sex partners are not treated. Chlamydia can be transmitted during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Chlamydia can also be passed from an infected mother to her baby during vaginal childbirth.
