I Battled Childhood Depression NEW YORK C ITY V OICES May/June 1999 Return to: NYC Voices Home 7/99 Voices Recovery By Andrew Carroll
Many times the greatest enemy we face is ourselves. I have fought my internal enemy in the form of childhood depression. For now I have won, but the outcome was, for a long time, uncertain. I had lived with depression before, when I was only seven, but I did not remember what it was like. So, when I was 12 and started feeling "in a rut" I thought nothing of it. I did not realize that the gradual slide into a nightmare would continue slowly as days passed. It was late October and as the seasons were changing, I began to feel worse and worse. I thought maybe there wasn't enough daylight, or maybe I had a genetic disorder. Whatever the reason, I knew I was slowly losing control of my life. By December, I was withdrawing from my friends, school, even my own family. Over time, a simple bad day turned into a string of unbearable nightmares, an intolerable existence in an empty void. Despite these warning signs, I still took no steps to stop it. I held on to the belief that it was a natural part of growing up, and it would get better if just given time. By March, everyone in my family knew something was wrong with me. We decided I should see a psychiatrist and find out if medication might help. The psychiatrist diagnosed my depression and prescribed an antidepressant to make me feel better. We also made a decision that seemed even more important to me; we got a dog.

, Licensed Clinical Psychologist Q: Is there such a thing as "childhood depression"?
Contrary to popular belief, children are not immune to experiencing clinical depression. In fact, studies have found as many as one in 33 children and one in eight adolescents may be experiencing clinical depression. Seven to 14 percent of children will experience significant depression by the age of 15. Once a child has experienced depression, he or she is at risk of suffering again from depression within the next five years. Additionally, the rate of suicide for 5 to 24 year olds has nearly tripled from 1960, making suicide the leading cause of death among college age youth. What are some signs of childhood depression?

from The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) N ot only adults become depressed. Children and teenagers also may have depression, which is a treatable illness. Depression is defined as an illness when the feelings of depression persist and interfere with a child or adolescent’s ability to function. About 5 percent of children and adolescents in the general population suffer from depression at any given point in time. Children under stress, who experience loss, or who have attentional, learning, conduct or anxiety disorders are at a higher risk for depression. Depression also tends to run in families. The behavior of depressed children and teenagers may differ from the behavior of depressed adults. Child and adolescent psychiatrists advise parents to be aware of signs of depression in their youngsters.

Ten Percent of All Children Will Suffer a Depressive Episode Before Age 12: Few Get Help When They Need It
Other signs of depression in children include changes in appetite or energy level; sleeping a great deal more or less than usual; a drop in school performance; and excessive worrying. Especially worrisome is a loss of interest in things that used to give pleasure, as when a child seems not to care any longer for favorite toys or activities. Injuries that may seem accidental may have been the result of carelessness. The child may talk about death or thoughts of punishment. Though it's clear now that preadolescent children do suffer from depression, the actual incidence is not known. Diagnosis is difficult. Estimates range from a few tenths of a percent to the 15 to 20 percent that is found in adults. One estimate which fits our experience is that 10 percent of all children will suffer a depressive episode before age 12. It's well recognized now that suicide, usually a result of depression whether diagnosed or not, is on the increase among teens. But thoughts or wishes of death, and self-destructive behavior (often misinterpreted by adults as risky or dangerous play) are increasingly reported by young children. The idea that a child might think of taking his or her own life is horrifying and repugnant. And while we may be able to entertain the idea in theory, in real life when we run across such a child, perhaps in our own family, our denial kicks in.

    Childhood Depression
Children with learning disabilities are prone to chronic depression. Older adolescents and adults tend to become withdrawn. They may be quiet or become agitated, irritable, and angry; they may also look sad and talk about their sadness. Young children, on the other hand, tend to exhibit non-verbal clues and express their emotional struggles more by their behavior than by talking. A major depression typically lasts several weeks and may be intense. Mild chronic depression (dysthymia) may last for an extended period of time and frequently appears to be an aspect of a child's usual moods and personality.

Conference Report: the 4th International Conference on Bipolar Disorder
(Pittsburgh June 14-16, 2001) by John McManamy

Reprinted with permission from McMan's Depression and Bipolar Weekly Vol 3 No 25, June 27, 2001. BIPOLAR CONFERENCE In mid-June, the Western Psychiatric Institute hosted the Fourth International Conference on Bipolar Disorder. BIPOLAR KIDS After nine years of on-and-off therapy, Carol recalls, her new therapist first brought up the prospect of bipolar regarding her son Chris, then 11. But the first psychiatrist she went to said Chris was OCD while the second maintained he was PTSD. Treatment with an anti-anxiety agent followed, then an anti-psychotic, then another, with her son growing increasingly more violent and out of control. Desperate and with her self-confidence running on empty, Carol consented to an anti-depressant, which amounted to Mr Hyde, Jr. in pill form. "Among other lovely things," Carol recounts, "my son chased me with a baseball bat and a letter opener trying to kill me. I had to physically restrain him for up to six hours a day, usually by myself since my hubby had to work to pay for all the doctor's visits. My younger son had to witness all this mess, and the fear of someone being injured was intense."

    Childhood Depression
Presenter: Kate Sieper Researcher: Jodie Gunders Wednesday, 24 July 2002 Some ten-year-olds are on anti-depressants. Could our parenting and teaching techniques be robbing our children of their happiness? Dr Helen Street is a social psychologist from the University of Western Australia and is currently involved in a study examining depression in children. In fact, she's found four percent of the children she studied are clinically depressed, including some as young as three years old, and that there are actually ten-year-olds taking anti-depressants. Kate Sieper asked Dr Street where her studies of childhood depression began.

    Childhood Depression Overview
One in every 33 children may have clinical depression at any given time of year. Shockingly, up to 66% of these young people are not getting any help for their condition, despite the fact that depression is a leading cause of suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 5-15 year olds. Substance abuse and addiction often manifest as depression, bipolar disorder, etc.
When depression emerges early in life, it often persists, recurs and continues into adulthood and may predict severe illness in adult life. In children it can lead to school failure, alcohol or other drug use, and even suicide. To prevent damage to a young person's academic, social, emotional, and behavioral functioning, it is imperative that their depression be diagnosed and treated early.
Symptoms Of Depression In Children/Adolescents Symptoms of child and adolescent depression vary in severity and duration and may be different from those in adults. Warning signs and symptoms may include:
    • Missed school or poor school performance.
