By Daniel DeNoon WebMD Feature Reviewed By Brunilda Nazario, MD on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 Sometimes, it isn't just a phase kids are going through. Sometimes it's depression. Sometimes kids get sad. They may act depressed. Most kids get over the worst of these symptoms in a couple of days. Some don't. Parents, if they know to look, can tell the difference, says Marilyn B. Benoit, MD, immediate past president of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and clinical professor at Georgetown University, in Washington. "Parents know in their heart of hearts something has changed in their child and it is not going away," Benoit tells WebMD. "A child who is unhappy about a friend who treated them badly, they normally will get over that in a couple of days. But parents know when something is sticking and not going away. Most kids bounce back from an adverse experience in just a few days. Depressed children are still sad after a couple of weeks."

A 1998 study showed, however, that only 7 percent of suicide victims are receiving mental health care at the time of their death.

Childhood Depression Awareness Day
Childhood Depression Awareness Day is an annual observance that brings attention to a childhood mental illness that is becoming increasingly more common. The National Mental Health Association and its affiliates have observed Childhood Depression Awareness Day every May since 1997.
What is childhood depression?
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill defines childhood depression as a brain disorder that affects the acts, thoughts, and feelings of children. Signs and symptoms include school absences or poor school performance, a loss of interest in usual activities, changes in eating or sleeping habits, aches and pains without physical reasons, substance abuse, and thoughts about death or suicide. While depression in children is a serious illness, it is treatable with early intervention and support from family and health care providers.
How many children are affected by childhood depression?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, recent studies show that one out of every 33 children may have depression. If one parent has depression, or the family has a history of depression, the child is at increased risk for developing depression. In addition, the risk of experiencing subsequent episodes is high, and there is an increased chance that the child will develop other mental health disorders, such as anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

What Is Depression?
Depression is a serious health problem that affects people of all ages, including children and adolescents. It is the persistent experience of a sad or irritable mood and the loss of interest or pleasure in nearly all activities. These feelings are accompanied by a range of additional symptoms affecting appetite and sleep, activity level and concentration, and feelings of self-worth.
Clinical depression is more than just “feeling blue” or having a bad day. And it's different from the feelings of grief or sorrow that might follow a major loss, such as a death in the family. It’s not a personal weakness or a character flaw. Children and teens with clinical depression cannot simply “snap out of it.”
Depression is a form of mental illness that affects the whole body — it impacts the way one feels, thinks and acts. If left untreated, depression can lead to school failure, alcohol or other drug use, and even suicide.

MIami (UPN33 News) The latest psychological studies show, childhood isn't as carefree as once thought. The symptoms of major depression occur in three percent of children, and that number jumps to 15% by the time they're teenagers.
Dr. Karen Dineen-Wagner is a psychiatrist at the University of Texas at Galveston,
"They have difficulty eating, difficulty sleeping, and their symptoms can become so severe that they feel they're hopeless, and have the desire to kill themselves," she said.
But concerns over the safety of specific anti-depressants like Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft drugs called SSRI's, linger and some experts say it prevents many kids from getting the help they need.
Now a new study conducted by Dr. Dineen-Wagner has shown for the first time treating major depression in children with the medication Zoloft, also known as sertraline, may help depressed kids as much as it helps depressed adults.
"Sertraline was significantly better than placebo in improving depression in children and adolescents," Dr. Dineen-Wagner said.

Depression and Suicide in Children and Adolescents
Major depressive disorder is a serious condition characterized by one or more major depressive episodes. In children and adolescents, an episode lasts on average from 7 to 9 months (Birmaher et al., 1996a, 1996b) and has many clinical features similar to those in adults. Depressed children are sad, they lose interest in activities that used to please them, and they criticize themselves and feel that others criticize them. They feel unloved, pessimistic, or even hopeless about the future; they think that life is not worth living, and thoughts of suicide may be present. Depressed children and adolescents are often irritable, and their irritability may lead to aggressive behavior. They are indecisive, have problems concentrating, and may lack energy or motivation; they may neglect their appearance and hygiene; and their normal sleep patterns are disturbed (DSM-IV). Despite some similarities, childhood depression differs in important ways from adult depression. Psychotic features do not occur as often in depressed children and adolescents, and when they occur, auditory hallucinations are more common than delusions (Ryan et al., 1987; Birmaher et al., 1996a, 1996b). Associated anxiety symptoms, such as fears of separation or reluctance to meet people, and somatic symptoms, such as general aches and pains, stomachaches, and headaches, are more common in depressed children and adolescents than in adults with depression (Kolvin et al., 1991; Birmaher et al., 1996a, 1996b).

Educators can help fight childhood depression
by Dr. Steve Arnold According to the U.S. Surgeon General, between 10 and 15 percent of children and adolescents display symptoms of depression. That means an elementary teacher with a class of 22 may have two children suffering from depression, and a secondary teacher with six classes of 30 could teach 27 students dealing with depression. That is more than some private-practice psychologists see each day. We have only to look at the front page of the newspaper to realize the cause of childhood depression. Real families are connected to each of the wrecks, bombings, earthquakes, floods, shootings, diseases and divorces that happen everyday. Unfortunately, adults often want to deny the impact of these events on students’ lives. We tend to want to say “Oh, she’s over that now. That was last year,” but brain research has taught us that nothing is forgotten. All events are stored in the brain and impact our daily lives. Look at how the movie “Saving Private Ryan” caused thousands of Word War II veterans to remember the feelings and events they had buried for the past 50 years. Considering that, it’s easy to see how a fifth-grader could still be influenced by events that are less than 10 or 11 years old.

Depression in children is quite common. This section will help parents understand, identify, and deal with the problem of depression in their children. What is depression? Depression is an unhappy mood that affects our daily functioning. When depression is too severe or lasts too long it can be considered an illness. Left untreated, depression can take the joy out of life, and even remove the desire to live. Everyone experiences minor upsets, but this does not mean that everyone is depressed. To have a true depression the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks. Please understand that the following material relates to symptoms that have been present for this amount of time. Back to top How common is depression? Depression in children is far more common than most people realize and is equally divided among boys and girls. A study at the Child Guidance Center in 1983 found that one our of three children referred was depressed. A recent University study found that one of ten children without known problems had suicidal thoughts.
