THE WASHINGTON ACUPUNCTURE CENTER.
CAUSALGIA
Causalgia is characterized by persistent, diffuse burning pain which tends to recur from various stimuli, such as contact with air or drying of a peripheral nerve. The pain may be severe and accompanied by circulatory disturbances, discoloration, coldness and excessive sweating of the involved part. The muscles of an involved arm or leg may atrophy from immobilization to avoid pain.
There is no effective drug for curing causalgia, but some drugs may relieve the pain for a few hours after each dose. Most of these drugs have undesirable side effects and are addictive.
Acupuncture has been very successful in giving lasting relief from the pain of causalgia When the pain is relieved, the patient becomes able to use the involved part normally and thereby reduce the other symptoms of this condition.
Improving nutrition will speed recovery from all the symptoms of causalgia Daily intake of vitamins is recommended
As pain is relieved, mild exercise of the involved part should begin. It is important to avoid chilling and medications

General Discussion
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS) is a rare disorder of the sympathetic nervous system that is characterized by chronic, severe pain. The sympathetic nervous system is that part of the autonomic nervous system that regulates involuntary, bodily functions such as increasing heart rate, constricting blood vessels, and increasing blood pressure. Excessive or abnormal responses of portions of the sympathetic nervous system are thought to be responsible for the pain associated with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
(RSDS)
What is reflex sympathetic dystrophy?
Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS) is a condition that features a group of typical symptoms, including pain (often "burning" type), tenderness, and swelling of an extremity associated with varying degrees of sweating, warmth and/or coolness, flushing, discoloration, and shiny skin. What causes reflex sympathetic dystrophy?
RSDS is also referred to as "the shoulder-hand syndrome," "causalgia," and "Sudeck's atrophy." The exact mechanism of how RSDS develops is poorly understood. The theories include irritation and abnormal excitation of nervous tissue, leading to abnormal impulses along nerves that affect blood vessels and skin. A variety of events can trigger the condition, including trauma, surgery, heart disease, degenerative arthritis of the neck, stroke or other brain diseases, nerve irritation by entrapment (such as carpal tunnel syndrome) or shingles, shoulder problems, breast cancer, and drugs for tuberculosis and barbiturates. There is no associated event in one third of patients.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Alternative Names: CRPS; RSDS; Causalgia; Shoulder-hand syndrome; Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome; Sudeck's atrophy
Definition: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain syndrome with two forms. CRPS 1 currently replaces the term "reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome". It is a chronic nerve disorder that occurs most often in the arms or legs after a minor or major injury. CRPS 1 is associated with severe pain; changes in the nails, bone, and skin; and an increased sensitivity to touch in the affected limb. CRPS 2 replaces the term causalgia, and results from an identified injury to the nerve.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: CRPS often develops after an injury or infection that has occurred in an arm or leg. It can also occur after heart attacks and strokes. However, the condition can sometimes appear without obvious injury to the affected limb. The cause of CRPS is not completely understood. It is thought to result from damage to the nervous system, including the nerves that control the blood vessels and sweat glands. The damaged nerves are no longer able to properly control blood flow, sensation, and temperature to the affected area. This leads to medical problems in the nerves, blood vessels, skin, bones, and muscles.
