Information About Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy: Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a disorder that occurs occasionally after almost any injury, such as an ankle sprain or fracture, an operation, or soft tissue injury. Email Address: The word you're forgetting is probably causalgia. I'm sorry to inform you that causalgia is a form of RSD. It's now called "complex regional pain syndrome type 2"...while RSD is type 1. All it means is that your RSD is caused by some type of direct nerve injury. Causalgia is the oldest term for RSD. It was coined in 1867 by Dr. Silas Weir Mitchell. He studied nerve injuries in Civil War veterans. Causalgia means "burning pain" in Greek. Dr. Mitchell and 2 colleagues wrote a book called "Gunshot Wounds and Other Injuries of Nerves," published in 1864, with a very vivid description of RSD/causalgia. Causalgia is harder to treat than regular old RSD (which isn't easy either!!!). That's because of the underlying nerve damage, which might not be fixable at all. It's treated just like CRPS type 1: sympathetic nerve blocks, physical therapy, and certain meds.

R.S.D. is a disease which involves pain, swelling, vassal motor instability, osteoporosis, and topical skin changes.
