(it was some six months ago and i don't believe that problem relates to the current one.) My dog, king tut, a black poodle now almost 14 years old, has cataracts. I have read your very helpful output on the subject and cleared him for the qualifications you specify. notably the retina has been evaluated

Cataracts
Back to Top General Cataracts Information Cataracts are a painless eye condition that occurs when the lens of the eye thickens and becomes clouded or opaque. The cataract blocks the passage of light from entering the eye, making focusing very difficult. The senile cataract, which occurs in people over the age of 65, is the most common form of the disease. Cataracts vary in size. Some are very small and do not cause a disturbance of vision. Others can grow larger and denser over time, resulting in serious vision changes. As a cataract grows it can overtake the eye, sometimes causing the entire eye to appear white and cloudy. This is called a “ripe” cataract, which can result in severe vision problems. Some people with cataracts see significant improvement by wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses enhance vision. Others require surgery to remove the cataract. Cataracts can cause blindness, but the incidence of this occurring is very rare.

CATARACT
WHAT IS A CATARACT?
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF A CATARACT IS SUSPECTED?
The first thing to do if your veterinarian indicates your pet has a cataract is to have your pet examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist. The lens is an important link of the total visual system, yet the health of the entire eye should be evaluated before the lens develops a complete cataract. Early evaluation of the eye with a cataract sometimes permits examination of the retina. If the cataract is complete and 'mature', the retina cannot be directly examined and an ultrasound or an electroretinogram examinations, or both may be needed to assess the health of the retina. At the time of the initial examination, the cataract may sometimes be identified as to cause, area of involvement and stage of progression. Not all cataracts lead to blindness. "Incomplete" cataracts may not impair vision significantly. If your pet has a cataract and has shown some visual loss, evaluation will include the consideration of and benefit of cataract surgery.

Alaska eyeglasses, Kenai contact lenses As we get older, most of us start to develop an eye condition called presbyopia. It's a natural part of an aging which makes it harder to focus up close and at arm's length.
For over 200 years, the main solution to presbyopia has been bifocals. But today, this outdated technology simply cannot meet the needs of contemporary lifestyles that place more demands on your ability to see clearly.
It's The Ultimate Solution.
Varilux Comfort lenses have been designed to work like the human eye. So your vision is natural, clear and comfortable at all distances. And there's no annoying image jump like you would experience with bifocals.
  • In fact, with today's advanced technology, there's no reason to wear bifocals anymore. Choose Varilux Comfort instead, and you'll be getting the most technologically advanced lenses in the world, offering you uninterrupted vision from near to far:In an independent clinical study 92% of bifocal wearers preferred Varilux Comfort lenses to bifocals.
Whatever your lifestyle, whatever your prescription, there is a Varilux Comfort lens material to meet your needs. Of course, you'll want to discuss your options with your private eyecare professional. Until then, we've provided this handy chart so you can be better informed about the individual features of each Varilux Comfort lens and their benefits to you.

The above picture shows a pair of Snap-On Pinhole Glasses, a form of pinhole glasses that can be very useful to people with cataracts. A cataract is an opacity in the lens that causes incoming light to scatter, causing poor vision. The wider the pupil, the more such scattering can occur. Pinhole glasses eliminate the scattering caused by the outer portion of the lens and thus improve the vision in some people. However, those people who need to wear their full prescription to get the best possible vision can't wear pinholes at the same time. These Snap-Ons are therefore designed to be worn over prescription glasses, adding the pinhole effect to the prescription lenses.

What are cataracts? A cataract is any opacity or loss of transparency ofthe lens of the eye. The disturbances. How are cataracts inherited?
http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/ocular disorders/cataracts.htm
What are cataracts? A cataract is any opacity or loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. The opacity may be confined to a small area of the lens or capsule, or it may affect the whole structure. A complete cataract affecting both eyes will result in blindness, whereas small non-progressive cataracts will not interfere with vision. Primary cataracts occur in some breeds; in other breeds the cataract may develop secondarily to another inherited disorder such as progressive retinal atrophy or glaucoma Most cataracts are inherited. Non-hereditary cataracts also occur, as a result of other diseases, trauma, toxicity, or metabolic disturbances. How are cataracts inherited? The genetics have not yet been defined for most affected breeds. In others, the mode of inheritance is autosomal recessive autosomal dominant , or with incomplete dominance. What breeds are affected by cataracts As you can see from the following list, inherited cataracts have been identified in many breeds. In general, the age of onset, the ophthalmoscopic abnormalities seen, the rate of progression, and the degree of symmetry are specific to each breed. Congenital cataracts are those that are present when the eyes open or before 8 weeks of age; juvenile or developmental cataracts occur in young animals up to about 4 years of age; and later onset cataracts develop in mature animals. Afghan hound (early developing cataracts progressing to visual impairment by 2 - 3 years of age)

IS CUSTOM WAVEFRONT LASIK FOR YOU? Customizing LASIK surgery to provide each patient with the safest and best outcome is the ultimate goal of all LASIK surgeons and laser manufacturers. However, there are many different ways of approaching this goal and there is a good deal of confusion as to which approach is best. The following information hopefully will help you to understand the differences in the technology available and allow you to make a more informed decision when confronted with these choices. The human eye is a less than perfect optical system. Its optical defects produce distortions or “aberrations” in vision. To measure these aberrations, parallel light rays are directed into the eye passing through the cornea, lens and vitreous cavity to the retina. When these rays return to where they originated they are distorted (aberrated) to some degree. This aberration is then measured on a device that is called an aberrometer. This information can then be used by the excimer laser to correct these defects. The more specific the laser is in addressing these aberrations, the more customized the LASIK treatment will be.

Cataract
A cataract is a cloudy area in the eye's lens that can cause vision problems.
Normal vs. Cloudy Lens The most common type is related to aging. More than half of all Americans age 65 and older have a cataract. In the early stages, stronger lighting may lessen the vision problems caused by cataracts. At a certain point, however, surgery may be needed to improve vision. Today, cataract surgery is safe and very effective. What is the lens?
What is a cataract?

What are the symptoms?
What are the different types of cataract? ... What can you do to protect your vision? What is the lens
The lens is the part of the eye that helps focus light onto the retina. The retina is the eye's light-sensitive layer that sends visual signals to the brain. The lens is located just behind the iris, the colored part of the eye. In focusing, the lens changes shape. It becomes rounder when you look at nearby objects and flatter for distant objects. Back to the Top What is a cataract The lens is made mostly of water and protein. The protein is arranged to let light pass through and focus on the retina. Sometimes some of the protein clumps together and starts to cloud a small area of the lens.

As the opacity thickens, it prevents light rays from passing through the lens and focusing on the retina. There are three types of cataracts.
