Cataracts Cataracts develop when damage to the protein of the lens of the eye clouds the lens and impairs vision. Most people who live long enough will develop cataracts. Cataracts are more likely to occur in those who smoke, have diabetes , or are exposed to excessive sunlight. All of these factors lead to oxidative damage. Oxidative damage to the lens of the eye appears to cause cataracts in animals and people. It is unlikely that any nutritional supplements or herbs can reverse existing cataracts.

What are cataracts?
A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. The lens is located near the front of the eye. It focuses light on the retina, at the back of the eye, to form the images we see.
A cataract may affect just a small part of the lens, or it may cloud the entire lens. If your sight isn’t badly impaired, the lens doesn’t have to be removed. But if the central part of the lens is cloudy, you may not be able to see unless the lens is taken out.
  • Cataracts do not spread from one eye to the other, but
they may develop in both eyes at the same time. A cataract is not a film on the outside of the eye. Cataracts are not caused by overusing your eyes, and
using your eyes doesn’t make them worse. Cataracts usually develop over many years, not over a

Cataract A cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eye and is the most common cause of blindness in dogs. Cataracts can be caused by injuries or diabetes, but most cataracts in dogs are inherited. Any opacity in the lens is called a cataract; very small spots do not significantly affect vision. However, most cataracts will progress, and ultimately cause blindness. The lens is located behind the colored iris; thus when a cataract occurs, the pupil may appear white. Vision through a mature cataract is like looking through white painted glass. A dog with complete cataracts giving a white appearance to the eyes. Cataract surgery is approximately 90-95% successful. However, this means that in 5-10% of cases, complications may prevent vision recovery. The purpose of the examinations before and after surgery is to detect and prevent these complications whenever possible. In uncomplicated cases, vision will begin to improve within a few days; after six weeks, healing is usually complete and medication is discontinued. Once the doctor has examined your pet and surgery has been agreed upon, a blood analysis will be done to detect any generalized illness and thus minimize the inherent risks associated with general anesthesia. Eye drops will be dispensed to be started before the surgery. You will use these medications after the surgery as well. Your pet will be admitted to the hospital on the morning of the surgery. The hair will be clipped from the area around the eyes and the front legs (to administer the anesthetic). An electro-retinogram test may be necessary to evaluate the function of the retina.

Bilateral Cataracts
The lens is a unique living ocular tissue that is usually clear or transparent and is referred to as "the crystalline lens" by doctors. The normal lens focuses light on the the light sensitive nervous tissue located in the back of the eye which is known as the retina. A cataract is an opacity (or cloudy change) of the lens that scatters light and looks gray or white. The cataract usually starts as small dots or microscopic blisters and progresses to involve larger areas of the lens. The rate of progression is difficult to predict and may be very slow or quite rapid. When a light is shined into the eye of a patient with a complete cataract, the patient only sees a white light and no images can be seen. The first thing to do if your veterinarian indicates your pet has a cataract, is to have your pet examined by a veterinary opthamologist. The lens is an important link of the total visual system, yet the health of the entire eye should be evaluated before the lens develops a complete cataract. Not all cataracts lead to blindness. Evaluation will include the consideration, and the benefit, of cataract surgery. Signs such as bumping into objects, failing to retrieve favorite toys and fear of being left alone may be signs of vision loss. These are especially significant if they occur within the pet's home or yard.

Juvenile Cataracts
by Malcolm Dupries
A cataract is described as when the eye develops an opacity, a white film, of the ocular lens or its capsule. Juvenile Cataracts are those that develop at an early stage in life. Some puppies developed the initial lesion that were less than six months old. The use of a slit lamp, also known as a biomicroscope, is required to diagnose cataracts.
It is thought that juvenile cataracts are autosomal recessive, that is genetically passed from one generation to the next. In order for any autosomal recessive characteristic to appear in an offspring, both parents must either be carriers, or have the recessive characteristic. Some breeds of dog have a higher incidence of the disorder than others. It is imperative that breeders exercise caution to prevent the spread of this disease throughout their bloodlines.

Cataract Fact Sheet from the SchepensEye Research Institute at Harvard
A cataract is a clouding of a part of the eye known as the crystalline lens. The lens is a clear tissue located behind the pupil - the dark circular opening in the middle of the iris or colored part of the eye. The lens works with the transparent cornea, which covers the eye's surface, to focus light on the retina at the back of the eye. When the lens becomes cloudy, or cataractous, light cannot pass to the retina properly, and vision is blurred and decreased.

Cataracts
What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eye. Because most cataracts are related to aging , the prevalence increases to about 50 percent for individuals between ages 65 and 74 , and to nearly 70 percent for individuals over age 75. In fact , almost everyone who lives long enough will develop cataracts. While the majority of cataracts are related to aging, younger individuals , including infants , may develop cataracts. Diabetes is the second leading cause of cataracts. Diabetic cataracts develop at a younger age and progress to affect vision more quickly than age-related cataracts. Other causes of cataracts include trauma , prolonged use of steroid medications , and inherited cataracts. Smoking and excessive exposure to sunlight have been shown to hasten the onset of cataract formation. Recent evidence suggests that vitamin E and vitamin C may decrease the risk of cataracts. How do I know if I have a cataract? Cataracts blur one's vision. Early on , cataracts cause glare at night - creating halo's around on-coming car lights. Night driving becomes increasingly difficult. Eventually, patients experience difficulty reading fine print in newspapers and magazines. Often with cataract formation , the lens discolors from transparent to a yellow color ; this leads to a false perception of the real world of color. When should I consider cataract surgery?

What are the risks involved with Cataract surgery?

What is a Cataract? Mature Cataract Immature Cataract Like a camera, eyes have a clear lens inside them that is used for focusing. A cataract is any opacity within a lens. The opacity can be very small (incipient cataract) and not interfere with vision. It can involve more of the lens (immature cataract) and cause blurred vision. Eventually, the entire lens can become cloudy, and all functional vision lost. This is called a mature cataract.

What is not a cataract? Normal geriatric dog eye,

Why did my dog develop a Cataract?
  • Most cataracts in dogs are inherited. The cataract may develop rapidly over weeks, or slowly over years, in one or both eyes.

Cataracts
Normally light enters the eye from the front, passes through a clear lens, and reaches the back of the eye so you can see. If the lens becomes cloudy like frosted glass, light cannot pass through, and you cannot see properly. 'Cataract' is the name of the 'cloudy' human lens.
a clear lens: no cataract
the light enters the eye directly a cloudy lens = cataract
the cataract scatters the light that enters the eye Think of a camera, with a lens that bends the light so that the light 'focuses' onto the film at the back. If this lens becomes scratched or greasy, it cannot bend the light in the correct direction, and the light is scattered in all directions. You may notice blurred or misty sight, see double, or notice colours appear much duller than they did previously.
