community diaries shop Cat Scratch Disease: Is Your Child At Risk? by Roxanne Willems Snopek Cats are now the number one pet in North America, and with good reason. Small, clean and hardy, they make wonderful household companions. Unfortunately, some cats carry an organism called Bartonella henselae, which can cause Cat Scratch Disease. CSD isn't common, but it affects mostly children. Usually the symptoms are mild, but for anyone with a weakened immune system, CSD can be extremely serious. Understanding how CSD is transmitted and recognizing the symptoms will help protect children from contracting it. Five-year-old Andrew loved wrestling with his new kitten, and his mother wasn't surprised to see little hair-line scratches up and down her son's arms they both liked to play rough, and she figured it would teach Andrew to be gentle. What she was surprised to discover however, was that those "learning experiences" put her son at risk of developing Cat Scratch Disease. Caused by a tiny organism called Bartonella henselae, Cat Scratch Disease is a zoonosis: a disease that can be transmitted between humans and animals. In this case, cats infected with Bartonella don't become ill themselves; they simply act as reservoirs for the organism. Researchers believe Bartonella is spread between cats by fleas that jump from cat to cat, inoculating with every bite. Kittens are more susceptible to contracting the organism than adult cats, and owners of kittens infested with fleas are 29 times more likely to develop Cat Scratch Disease than people with flea-free cats.

Cat illness, dog is sick, behavior problems....Once a week Pets.ca will publish a pet tip. Tip - 21 - Cat scratch disease Cat scratch disease (CSD) affects humans, not cats.
Cat scratch disease is also known as Cat Scratch Fever and benign lymphoreticulosis. Cat scratch disease is a rare disease that occurs when you are scratched (or in rare cases bitten) by a cat (but usually a kitten) that has a specific bacteria on its paws or teeth. The bacteria originates in the cat's saliva. At the site of the scratch you develop a sore or a lesion and the sore may only develop 3-30 days after you have been bitten/scratched. The sore may continue to get larger, take a long time to heal and the lymph glands will get infected usually in the glands closest to where you were scratched (most commonly under the armpit). You may get a fever that lasts for a few days after having being scratched or bitten. As a preventative measure always clean the area where the scratch or bite took place with a disinfectant. In healthy people, cat scratch disease is normally not serious and it will usually clear up on its own without treatment. If you have really painful lymph nodes that won't heal after a couple of weeks or a fever that is taking too long to break, antibiotics can help. Cat scratch disease is extremely dangerous to people with compromised immune systems.

Cat Scratch Disease: Has Identification of The Causative Agent Been Solved? United States the incidence of CSD has been estimated at 9.3 cases per 100,000 population each year. In 1983, lymph node biopsies prepared with Warthin-Stany silver stain enabled visualization of pleomorphic organisms. In 1988, a specific bacillus was cultured from the lymph nodes of CSD patients. This motile, gram-negative rod was later named Afipiafelis in honor of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), where most of the work was performed. This is the organism currently reported to be the etiologic agent of CSD in Veterinary Clinics of North America , Small Animal Practice.

General Discussion Cat-Scratch Disease (also commonly known as Cat-Scratch Fever) is a self- limiting infectious disease characterized by swelling and pain in the lymph nodes (regional lymphadenitis). Symptoms can vary from mild to severe, and may include achiness and discomfort (malaise), and/or loss of appetite (anorexia). In most cases a scratch, bite, or lick of a cat is considered to be the source of the infection. Symptoms do not appear for several days after exposure and may last for several weeks. Although Cat-Scratch Disease usually subsides without treatment, antibiotic and/or antimicrobial therapy may speed recovery. Approximately 22,000 cases are reported in the United States each year, although more mild cases may go unnoticed and resolve without treatment.

Cat scratches and bites can cause cat scratch disease, a bacterial infection carried in cat saliva. The bacteria are passed from a cat to a human after the cat licks its paws then scratches human skin. Rubbing the eyes after petting a cat's fur can also spread cat scratch disease. Young kittens less than 1 year of age are more likely to scratch, increasing the likelihood of infection. What are the symptoms of cat scratch disease? The following are the most common symptoms of cat scratch disease. However, each child may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
  • a cat bite or scratch that does not heal or worsens over time painful or swollen glands, especially under the armpits flu-like symptoms including headache, lethargy, decreased appetite, fatigue, joint pain, or fever body rash
The symptoms of cat scratch disease may resemble other conditions or medical problems. Always consult your child's physician for a diagnosis.

CAT SCRATCH DISEASE Cat scratch disease (CSD) is caused by Bartonella henselae, a gram-negative bacterium. As the name suggests, it is carried by cats and is usually associated with catinflicted trauma, e.g., a scratch (in most cases) or a bite. Some 22,000 people reportedly have this disease each year, but its incidence is probably much higher because most cases are, asymptornatic. Clinical CSD in humans typically is characterized by swollen, painful lymph nodes, usually those immediately proximal to the site of inoculation; lowgrade fever, muscle aches, and general malaise are common. In more than 90 per cent of cases the disease is mild and self-limited, and symptoms resolve without treatment within a few weeks to a few months. More severe disease that requires hospitalization does occur. Rarely, B. henselae

Ticks Have Potential To Transmit Cat Scratch Disease
WASHINGTON, DC - April 12, 2001 Cat scratch disease may no longer be the appropriate name for the malady caused by the bacterium Bartonella henselae. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have discovered evidence of the organism in ticks, suggesting that the arthropod has the potential to transmit the disease. They report their results in the April 2001 issue of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

C at scratch disease is an infection that causes swelling of the lymph nodes (swollen glands) after an animal scratch - most often from a cat. Bartonella Henselae is the bacterium that causes cat scratch disease. It is found in all parts of the world, and over 80% of cases affect those under age 21. Most cases occur in fall and winter. In the United States, about 22,000 cases occur annually. Worldwide, the disease affects nine out of every 100,000 persons each year and multiple cases within families are common, especially those who have the same cat. A cat with Bartonella Henselae infection does not look sick. Experts believe that up to 44% of cats have Bartonella Henselae infections at some time in their lives. About 55% to 70% of people with the infection have a cat scratch somewhere on their bodies. A blister or a small bump often develops 3 to 10 days after the scratch and may be mistaken for an insect bite. It is most commonly found on the arms and hands, head, and scalp.

VI. Cats - Health: Cat Scratch Disease
INDEX
Formerly known as cat scratch fever, cat scratch disease was first described in 1950. Since then and up until today, mysteries abound around this disease that can be transmitted from cats to humans. It is estimated that every year about 24,000 people contract cat scratch disease, which is caused by tiny bacteria known as Bartonella henselae. It usually clears up on its own in about 6 to 12 weeks, but the symptoms-including fever, weakness, sore throat, and swollen, painful lymph nodes in the arms, neck and groin-can be unsettling. Felines act as carriers of this pesky pathogen, which has also been found in fleas. Although the evidence is not 100-percent conclusive, these fleas most likely pass the infection on to their feline hosts, who never exhibit any clinical signs of infection. Research suggests that about 40 percent of cats who do become exposed to the bacteria develop immunity to it. The bacteria can be passed on yet again when a cat carrying the bacteria scratches-and breaks the skin of-his human owner. The risk of infection increases if your pet has fleas, and rises even higher if he is still a kitten.
